The North Korean army said Thursday it had final approval to launch "merciless" military strikes on the United States, involving the possible use of "cutting-edge" nuclear weapons.
In a statement published by the official KCNA news agency, the General Staff of the Korean People's Army (KPA) said it was formally informing Washington that reckless US threats would be "smashed by... cutting-edge smaller, lighter and diversified nuclear strike means".
"The merciless operation of (our) revolutionary armed forces in this regard has been finally examined and ratified," the statement said.
North Korea had threatened a "pre-emptive" nuclear strike against the United States a month ago, and last week the supreme army command ordered its strategic rocket units to combat status for strikes on the US mainland and America bases in Guam and Hawaii.
"The moment of explosion is approaching fast," Thursday's statement said, adding that a war could break out on the Korean peninsula "today or tomorrow".
"In view of this situation, the KPA General Staff in charge of all operations will take powerful practical military counteractions in succession," it said.

And here he is now...Five O'Clock Charlie.
They have been conducting military training and “tunnel exercises” on the border. This has caused hardships for civilians on the border. Some of this has lessened.
Soldier fires over food, 5 die. Even the soldiers are being starved
Can you say,”Wag the Dog” in Kenyan?
Mmmmhmmm, Mr. Kim. Go ahead. *yawn*
They’d better pull the trigger soon or they’ll be even more of a laughing stock than they are now.
They could hit Guam with a nuke. Is Hawaii in range?
Shutup, Kim! Pull out your nukes and commence! Its time for a showdown!
They’ll probably blow themselves up trying...
And it's rainin'...all over the world....
When our joint exercises end, NK will declare victory.
Or, they could just as easily hit Chicago, LA or Washington DC with small nuclear weapons smuggled across our "secure" southern border..............
I’m so Ronery. So ronery. So ronery and sadry arone.
There’s no one. Just me onry. Sitting on my rittle throne. I work rearry hard and make up get prans but, nobody listens, no one understands. Seems rike no one takes me serirousry. And so, I’m ronery. A rittle ronery. Poor rittle me.

That could cause the island to tip over.
I have no doubt the Norks are in bed with the Hezbollah scum in Nicaragua. We should have killed the tin-pot tyrant there long ago.
The Guns of August.... In April.
There’s never been a Princess Aura I didn’t like.
What we should do is at the General Assembly of the UN notify them that if NK causes one death we will turn NK into a glass wasteland. And do it!
Scary stuff. Their range is just scraping the east coast there.
And then, the Norks will FINALLY have a world-class export item: Gourmet Food.
I refer, of course, to the massive supplies they will then have, of Peasant Under Glass. . . .
(diving for cover, grinning madly. . . )
I recall during the Clinton years that North Korea was the largest recipient of foreign aid from the U.S.
When I first saw that I was astounded. Maybe they think they can get a repeat if the make enough fuss.
Think about the current administration in NK.
Then think about the current administration in the US.
Just think about it, I’m thinking could there be a more perfect time to “wag the dog”?
For the past thirty years, or so, I shunned and was amused by the conspiracy theorists. Not anymore! Despite what our gov’t would like us to believe, two plus two still equals four.
How can this be true? North Korea doesn't have nuclear weapons or so says our Purple Heart bedecked, Vietnam War veteran and current SoS based on following quote at NEWSMAX "Kerry: US Won't Accept NKorea as 'Nuclear State'" (http://www.newsmax.com/Newsfront/nkorea-kerry-nuclear-state/2013/04/02/id/497518)
I prefer my nuclear assaults to be the merciful kind, myself.
“I prefer my nuclear assaults to be the merciful kind, myself.”
Yes, kill them ever so gently. All of them.
Between 1995 and 2012, North Korea received a total of approximately 1.2 billion in U.S. foreign aid (it received virtually nothing before 1995 or after 2009). The largest single-year amount of foreign aid that went to North Korea was ~$285 million in 1999. By contrast, Israel has received at least $2.5 billion in foreign aid per year every year since 1998.
There are lots of ways to deliver a nuke to us. Put in in a an airliner—pained to look like Japan air—one way trip to crash into any city they wish. Maybe ship it in a container vessel, bring it to US in pieces—assemble in an rented house, slip into a u-haul truck and Boom. A sub could head for Hawaii, surface and float the bomb into the beach at Waikiki—and BOOM. One needs to be a wee bit creative.
Now let’s see who gets that (note my screen name)
“They could hit Guam with a nuke.”
Are they going to FedEx it to Guam?
They have missiles that could reach Guam.
“They could hit Guam with a nuke.”
“That could cause the island to tip over.”
Ha, ha, well, you just can’t be too careful, you know. Has anyone notified the congressman of that possibility?
Our joint exercise Foal Eagle ends about 30 April, so look for more and more extreme antics by NK until then.
No ammunition has been released to NK ground units.
Somethings cooking on the China-NK border, a Chinese fighter penetrated NK airspace and overflew most of the border on 21 March. However, most of the Chinese ground units that moved to the border, have pulled back to their garrisons.
China delivered no crude to NK in February or March, for the first time in 39 months, looks like a pressure play.
If NK starts up their mothballed reactors, it would take many years to produce weapons plutonium, no threat there. NK only has enough plutonium for about 6 weapons and their blast yields todate have been very weak.
One thing of note, all the NK war posturing to date has been made by civil, government officials, not the NK military officials.
When NK has done that in the past, it has allowed NK deniability and an easy way to walk backwards as they can claim that the government was just preparing the people for martial law.
