Is Fisker Headed for a Solyndra-Like Collapse?

By MATTHEW MOSK April 2, 2013 As a major financial deadline looms, a green car company that was approved for a $529 million loan from the U.S. Energy Department is keeping quiet about whether it could be headed towards a Solyndra-like collapse, following reports the company may be preparing for bankruptcy.

"We are not offering any official comment on the speculation around bankruptcy at this stage," Roger Ormisher, a spokesperson for the electric car company Fisker Automotive, told ABC News recently.

Ormisher was responding to questions about reports last week that Fisker had hired a prominent law firm to advise it on possible bankruptcy proceedings. The Anaheim, Calif.-based company recently disclosed that it had furloughed non-essential U.S. workers in March, a move made as the company is "in the process of identifying a strategic partner... [but] continuing to manage its day-to-day operations," Ormisher said.

Fisker Automotive entered the electric car market with hefty support from the U.S. Energy Department and backing from such celebs as Justin Bieber and Leonardo DiCaprio, but the company and its high-priced Fisker Karma have continued to skid financially.

It is a beautiful car, but price is too high for the marketplace.

WHAT WENT WRONG?!?!?

THEY HARDLY SOLD ANY DAMN CARS!!!!! And pissed away hundreds of millions of dollars. Their ONLY source of batteries - and having no other supplier - tanking like Solyndra didn’t help.

This is what happens when communist central planners (Obama and crew) replace the free market. In the midst of a terrible recession they create a product only rich, corrupt Commissars can afford, then complain because the peasants aren’t buying it. The system is doomed if they prevail.

Fisker Karma earns a failing grade from Consumer Reports

It broke down on the test track. Lots of other problems too.

What’s the difference between a Fisker and an F150 pickup? The difference is that people in the market for a vehicle want the F150 and are willing to pay the asking price. Econ 101 class dismissed. Quiz on Monday.

I was behind one on the way to work on morning. Great looking car, although the diamond shaped intake things might be a little overdone. Definitely wide and low and mean looking though. One thing I’ll say about the current generation of car stylists is that they’ve figured out how to make four doors look sleek.

I am not big fan of consumer reports. I have had very good luck owning cars rated poorly by CR. Part of that is I can diagnose many car problems myself. In my experience, American made cars suffer from lack of stringent inspections. The mentality is to let the car buyer find problem which is cheaper than inspecting every car thoroughly. But after those minor problems are taken care of, American cars can outlast most other cars.

Republican Congressman Drives a Fisker Karma

That would be Rep. John Campbell, R-CA48, one of the few CPAs on the Hill, and a "car guy" who used to own several dealerships and currently owns 20 cars, including five Ferraris and five Corvettes.

He regularly appears on the Hugh Hewitt Show. I'll have to remember to tune in and hear his take on the story.

The Fisker Karma is more than twice as expensive as a Chevy Volt (another plug-in hybrid -- or extended-range electric vehicle, if you prefer). It's priced about the same as the Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid, that is due to be released in a couple of weeks. Which would you rather have?

Sarah - It isn’t an Electric Car, it is a Hybrid.

Nothing wrong with driving any car you like, as long as your Neighbors aren’t subsidizing it with their CONFISCATED Tax Dollars.

Last time I checked, Funding Liberal Wet Dreams is not the role of our Constitutionally Limited Government.

BTW - I know two people who own Prius’s (is that a word?), and they love them.

Compare the styling of the Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid, in my post #22, with the Karma. The Karma has an aggressive style overall. IMHO, the Porsche looks “sleek” too, but not overly “aggressive” looking. The differences are greatest in the “face” of each car — the front-end design. Like the Porsche is confident of itself, but the Karma has to posture and make a fearsome face (anthropomorphizing, just a bit). Which do you prefer?

Both look great but both err a little bit in opposite directions, I think. The Porshe is a little too anodyne. The Karma is a little too forward and mask like. I think there’s a goldilocks middle ground that both missed. If I had to choose I’d probably go with the Karma too, but it would be a close call.

Odd. You would think that we'd have figured out how to stick some batteries and an electric motor in a vehicle by now, considering that the first 'car' was electric, and R.C. electric toys are abundant.

Campbell was a big booster for “Fisker” or the “Shyster”.
Some one made $Millions on this boondogle. Likely a Democrat or the squishy
moderate Campbell.

Venture capital debacle. We need hearings.Moron Campbell
has no business playing investment banker with tax dollars.

At $100,000 is this a wise choice? Full out throttle the POS last 40 miles. Limited market or none!
What a rip-off.
Rename it “Zer0” after Obama.
Thank Campbell for playing Investment banker with our tax dollars.

So. Do tell. And do document. With links. What bills did Congressman Campbell vote for that caused taxpayers to lose money on Fisker Motors??

Of course, admittedly, Campbell, the car guy, may have made an unwise purchase for his personal vehicle fleet. But that's his money and not the business of anyone who is not a screaming liberal faggot.

The Fisker Karma battery capacity is listed as 20.1 KW hours. This is equivalent in energy to about a half a gallon of gasoline. I just got back yesterday from a 520 mile trip where I used 23.7 gallons of gasoline to make the trip, and only filled the tank when I got home. You can't even heat, or air condition a real car for 520 miles on a half gallon of gasoline, much less travel 520 miles. The energy storage capacity of batteries is simply inadequate for making feasible electric cars.

America needs a good small car that people can afford. Use Gas—that we know works! Maybe something Like a 3 wheeled car (The Morgan for one—75 MPG and fun to drive!) Two cylinder engine made by Harley Davidson and can keep up on the freeway. Think more like Hitler and his People’s Car (The VW Bug) rather than the high priced Volt. We can make good cars—and we once did in the USA. We can do it again. It will happen when a Republican is in charge.

Your wishes will be fruitless.
The fervent desire of progressives is to get people out of independent vehicles and put them on controllable mass transport.

All the regulations related to emissions and safety produce subtle (and not so subtle) price increases working toward this goal.

Not me. Some years ago, Mrs. RWA had a Honda Civic and drove our youngest kid in it. I didn't drive it much but one time when SUVs started showing up in large numbers, I did and felt like an ant compared to them.

I told her she needed something bigger and she heartily agreed. We got rid of it and up-sized to a nice big van.

There’s one that I see in our neighborhood - it is a nice looking car. Too bad it is only for wealthy feel-good greenies. I read where the cool looking solar panel on the roof is pretty much for show, although is sold as a battery maintenance thing or something. Somebody figured out the output of it, and said if you parked it at the equator and there was never a cloudy day it would save you something like $18 on the cost of electricity over 10 years.

ROI for a $4000(?) solar panel system - not so good.
