The United States and Japan on Friday announced plans for basing troops in Okinawa that will result in Marines from there being moved to Hawaii and Guam.

...

“Under the plan, the United States will consolidate our forces over time and reduce our impact on the most populated parts of Okinawa,” U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said in a statement. “Together, our plan calls for the immediate return — upon the completion of certain necessary procedures — of certain facilities and areas on Okinawa.

I spent 13 months on Okinawa in '62 & '63.

Back then 'the rock' had the Marines at Camp Schwab (3rd Marines), Camp Hansen (9th Marines), Camp Sukiran (12th Marines), and Camp Haig (3rdMarDiv HQ). The Navy was in Naha, the Air Force in Kadena, and the Army in Sukiran.

Okinawa was a blast for this young man. I was then based with the 3rd Medical Battalion at Camp Haig. Best place to 'play'; Kadena 'gate 2' street. Most dangerous place...Koza '4 corners' (for reasons known only to those who were there at the time)

I was lucky. Never went that MSTS route, flew either MATS or MATS charter. When we left in Jan 1969, we sailed on the SS President Wilson, Yokohama-Honolulu-San Francisco. Only way to travel.

Most all the MSTS ships were named for Army generals or the like. There were two Patricks as I recall. One of them had split in half and sank on the West Coast, was raised and welded back for duty in Korea.
Yokohama-Seattle or Seattle-Yokohama took two weeks at sea. Our last trip back was on the General W. A. Mann, from Yokohama to Honolulu for a one day stop, then on to Oakland, CA which was a big Army depot at the time.
We toured a bit of Hawaii for the one day layover in ‘61. The Arizona Memorial had not been built at that time and all the big BBs were still in service.
Wife and I visited Hawaii for a week a few years ago and toured the Memorial and the Mighty Missouri. The Missouri had just come out of dry dock with fresh paint and looked like a million bucks. The new Navy officer uniforms were confusing. I thought they were Marines at first glance.

This was put on hold for a couple of years but I don't see why the move to Guam is a good idea. Guam isn't a transportation hub for planes or ships but a terminus. Except for emergencies, planes or ships only go near the island is because it's their final destination. Supply was a nightmare. Corrosion is murder on equipment.

I spent a few months there working on helicopters. Had a great time - but ran out of “new things” to see and do after a month or so

I was just a kid, so I never ran out of new adventures to have in Oki. My little brother went back there years later as a Marine, and was bored to tears after not too long.

Yokohama and Sagamihara as an Army Brat in the 1950s.

I spent three years in Japan in the mid '50s. Two of my brothers were born there during that time. I don't know the names of the bases, but we were in Tokyo and Sendai.
