NRA tactics erode post-Newtown support for gun-control measures
The Washington Post ^ | Apr. 5, 2013 | Tom Hamburger

Posted on 04/06/2013 9:57:48 AM PDT by EXCH54FE

Sen Mark Begich declared a “sea change” in the politics of gun control immediately after the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., telling his local newspaper that he would not hesitate to buck the powerful National Rifle Association.

Over the past two weeks, while Congress has been in recess, Begich said he was approached repeatedly by constituents who echoed NRA views, telling him not to, in his words, “mess with our gun rights” or “ban anything.”

The NRA’s recent successes on Capitol Hill — as well as a string of victories in state legislatures across the country — demonstrate the effectiveness of the group’s strategy to overcome a post-Newtown tilt toward gun control. The organization has drafted and circulated legislation, mobilized its members and continued to put pressure on politically vulnerable lawmakers.

“The NRA is one of the most important groups in my state,” said Begich, one of several Democrats from conservative states who are up for reelection next year.

But even gun-control advocates acknowledge that the NRA is getting the better of them, both in Congress and state capitals across the country.

The NRA’s congressional operation is so effective that one of the gun lobby’s most outspoken critics, Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), initially signed on as a sponsor of the NRA-supported background check bill. Blumenthal said he had no direct contact with the NRA when he signed on to the measure but had been drawn by the idea of a bipartisan initiative to improve background checks.

On Friday, Blumenthal withdrew his support, saying in an interview that he was no longer comfortable with the bill because of “serious unintended consequences” related to provisions governing the mentally ill.

The communist Newtown “tactics” need to be eroded. There are still too many Americans living in this country and we all still believe in liberty and freedom. We aren’t ready for the chains of communism yet.

Maybe the NRA is ‘getting the better of them’ because the NRA is right and they’re full of bull...

NRA == another kind of community organizer.

A kind that liberals don’t like too much.

The intent is right there. Alaska better fire this asshole.

Doesn’t the NRA have many members who vote?

Democrats are perfectly happy to commit voter fraud, so I wouldnt be surprised if this was a case of Democrat email fraud.

If gun-grabbers are making headway, it's a upwelling of popular support. If gun-rights folks beat them back, it's tactics.

Typical liberal spin.

The NRA is only an echo of our voices on supporting and defending the most important Amendment to the Constitution...the 2nd and it’s protection of our God given Right of self defense...........

Go ahead Democrats.... push through gun control like you did Obamacare and see what happens......Whatever it is will be good for the country and bad for you!

Alaska is due for another new Senator (well actually 2 new Senators, but one will have to wait.)

The real success of the NRA will be after total confiscation on Government. Beware, what these jackasses are doing may eventually bite them in the as@.

Yeah yeah, it’s the eeeevul NRA that’s doing it. It’s not the voters reading this crap legislation and realizing what’s in it and the consequences of it. No...

Heh heh heh. I love the sound of the socialist gun-grabbers wailing and gnashing their teeth.

They had better all get out and vote as well as encourage their relatives and neighbors to get out and vote for gun rights. Gun owners could volunteer for gun supporting politicians by knocking on doors and making phone calls. The Dems have their machines of government workers and cronies, it is time that gun owners and other patriots get their own “machine” together. Organization is power.

Image the police going door to door trying to confiscate guns and ammo. The door would be locked so they would have to knock down doors with battering rams, neighbors would see this, not a very good poster for the gun-grabbing politicians. When the police are battering down the doors, neighboors could video this and display it on you-tube. Image thousands of these videos all over you-tube. Don’t shoot ‘em with a gun, shoot ‘em with a camera.

This is part of the strategy I advocate. A lone family can’t fight the state, so your household firearms are pretty much forfeit, with or without bloodshed.
But, when the word gets out, look for some of these raids to not go like the state would want them to, as people will be ready for them.

Oh how so many of us would love to do so! Problem is Anchorage and the other south central towns along with Juneau. Government dependency thrives there!

If I understand correctly what happened here, Cornish received 2,897 E-Mails regarding gun control bills under consideration. He received 5 E-Mails in FAVOR of gun control, and 2,892 E-Mails AGAINST gun control. If there was Democrat fraud here, the 5 E-Mails he received in favor of gun control would have come from one person.

Elite liberals think there's two groups in this issue: one group wants to save children and one wants children murdered.

We kind of agree on that - but we think their silliness and lack factual understanding puts them into the ‘wanting children murdered’ group.

We want to save children - they want to grab guns.

Liberals want to 'feel' good about themselves - liberals use children's deaths to showcase how much the 'feel'... It doesn't matter to them if their ideas work it matters if their ideas make them feel superior ...

If we point out to liberals 'gun free zones' are where killers go to do killings - that the Batman killer drove PAST 4 or 5 theater's that did NOT ban guns to arrive at a 'gun free zone' to do his slaughter - they yawn. Facts are so tiresome for them.... They ‘feel’ it's us. Well, their useful idiots feel that way. Liberal elites at the top - folks running places like Chicago and Detroit don't care about the lives of non-liberal elites, they just want to take away guns.

If the Washington Post wants to stay in business they need to hire people who can think better than they write.

I wonder how liberals will try to square their “protect the children” mantra with the belief of other liberals in “post birth abortion.” Post birth abortion can only mean that the mother wanted an abortion. So the baby in born breathing and crying. And then they murder it.
