Ten Years After: A National Disgrace
Time.com ^ | Mar. 25, 2013 | Joe Klein

This is a month for painful anniversaries.... It was an absolutely terrible day for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, especially those looking for jobs. It was a day--yet another day--when the headlines were about a trooper gone berserk. This is true far too often: veterans involved in gun violence, suicide or domestic abuse, homeless veterans, addicted veterans. The woes are endless. The problems are real. But the vast majority of veterans don't suffer from them. And there were no high-profile public figures to stand up and speak for the majority in the days after the Bales massacre, especially for the thousands who were thanked for their service--and then quietly turned down for work because employers, well, they didn't want to take any chances....

To be sure, the problems are not all Shinseki's fault. There's been a lot of flag-waving and patriotic blather from politicians, but there's also been a scandalous absence of action.

The First Lady has been a valuable spokesperson for military families, but the President's record has been less than mediocre. Take, for instance, the absolutely ridiculous scandal involving the inability of the departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs to come up with a united system for electronic medical records that would allow troops to move seamlessly from the military to the VA. Barack Obama has been het up about electronic record keeping since the day he was elected. In 2009 he announced a plan to create a seamless system for the military.

We have now spent $1 billion on developing such a system, and in February the two departments announced that they had failed to come up with one. This was not Shinseki's fault. The VA has an excellent record-keeping system called Vista. The Defense Department wasn't sold, however.

I haven't read the article, but IMO, any 'problem' a returning warrior may endure is a direct result of being a warrior patriot for x number of months and within 15 minutes of coming home, reading a newspaper, listening to TV or even engaging in conversation, one must ask; What The Hell Am I Doing ??

How does a trained fighter of an enemy stop fighting when he perceives the enemy is HERE as well ?

Time.

It’s not a disgrace for them that I need to physically turn their magazine around at the supermarket in order to protect the vulnerable sensitivity of young prepubescent children who cannot view two women making out with each other and preserve their own normal sexual development.

Generations of my family, in laws, myself and my spouse.

We served for this garbage producer’s right to free speech, among other things.

When this turns around, and it will, there is no doubt as there is just only so much covering up of dead babies 55 million now, that these propagandists can accomplish, Time will be one of the first to go.

they should put down this trash and read about fallen dicktatatorships of the past if they truly want to be informed.

The VA is slow for sure. I retired in June 2011 and still have not had my claim finalized. They now say between July 2013 and February 2014. What the heck. I am ok with it because I don’t have any issues, but those that came back from Afghanistan with problems should not have to wait this long....hopefully they are cutting in front of me.

I myself am not a veteran (not drafted during Nam and lost and sowing my wild oats) but have deep respect for those willing to risk their life for others, and do not like them not getting the care they were promised for so doing.

Yet it is perhaps the best overall in the world. Thank God.

Returned from VN in the summer of 1968 and that's EXACTLY what I thought.
