FReeper Canteen ~ Sunday Chapel ~ AN HONEST DOUBTER ~ 07 April 2013

AN HONEST DOUBTER

The often heard quip, "He or she is a doubting Thomas," usually is given in a negative way...someone who can't get with the program or is not a team player. The origin of this statement goes to the passage in John's Gospel. Thomas, who somehow missed the first appearance of the resurrected Jesus to the rest of the disciples, states he will not believe until he sees and touches the Lord. He is a realist, a man who is shattered in his faith after witnessing the arrest and death of Jesus. He is honest enough to admit it, stating clearly his needs.

When we go through traumatic experiences, and are shaken to the very fiber of our being, we need special reassurance. Although Jesus says to Thomas, "Stop doubting and have faith," notice He still meets Thomas where he needs it most, and in a manner just right for us. We must be honest about our need for Him, admitting our doubts and lack of faith. Unlike pop psychology our strength does not come from within us, but from outside from the God who knows best. "Come and experience, and go forth in faith to love and serve the Lord."

Freep mail me to be on or off the Daily Bread ping list

I L-O-V-E . . .

April 7, 2013

My husband and I were at a public swimming pool when the people around us started staring into the sky. A small plane was emitting smoke in the form of letters. As we watched, the pilot spelled out the letters: “I L-O-V-E.” People began speculating: Maybe it was to be a marriage proposal. Perhaps a romantic man is standing nearby on a balcony with his girlfriend and will soon pop the Will-you-marry-me? question. We kept gazing upward: “I L-O-V-E Y-O-U J-E-.” I heard young girls guessing: “I bet it will be Jen or maybe Jessica.” He kept spelling. No. It was: “J-E-S-U-S.” The pilot was declaring love for Jesus for many people to see.

A friend of mine often ends his prayers with “I love You, Lord.” He says, “I can’t help but say ‘I love You’ after all He’s done for me.” In Romans 6:1-11, our Bible text for today, the apostle Paul tells us some of what Jesus has done for us that deserves our love: He was crucified, buried, and raised to life. Because of that, those of us who have put our faith in Jesus now have a new life (v.4), we no longer have to be controlled by sin or fear of death (vv.6,9), and one day we too will be resurrected to live with Him forever (v.8).

No wonder we say, “I love You, Jesus!”

Redeemed—how I love to proclaim it!
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed through His infinite mercy—
His child, and forever, I am. —Crosby
To show His love, Jesus died for us; to show our love, we live for Him.

Read: Romans 6:1-11

Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him. —Romans 6:8

1 Samuel 7-9; Luke 9:18-36

Dear God:
I ask that no Airman, Coast Guardsman,
Marine, Sailor, Soldier, Reservist, or National Guardsman
Feel alone or forgotten.

O Israel, hope in the Lord;
For with the Lord there is loving kindness,
And with Him is abundant redemption.
And He will redeem Israel
From all his iniquities.

Psalm 130:7 & 8

He Who blessed our forefathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - may He bless the fighters of the Israel Defense Force, who stand guard over our land and the cities of our G-d from the border of the Lebanon to the desert of Egypt, and from the Great Sea unto the approach of the Aravah, on the land, in the air, and on the sea.

May HASHEM cause the enemies who rise up against us to be struck down before them. May the Holy One, Blessed is He, preserve and rescue our fighting men from every trouble and distress and from every plague and illness, and may He send blessing and success in their every endeavor.

May He lead our enemies under their sway and may He grant them salvation and crown them with victory. And may there be fulfilled for them the verse: For it is Hashem, your G-d, Who goes with you to battle your enemies for you to save you.

G-d bless and keep your children safe, Alouette.

It has been a long time coming but the past few days have been nice. Sun shining and in the 40’s and low 50’s. All the snow is gone finally.

This has to be one of the longest and sickest winters on record.

Oh no....I hope the sickness didn’t get your family.

Glad to here all your snow is gone...time for green grass.

We had come a long way with snow melt. The main roads were dry, the islands all melted off. We had a huge lake at the end of our street. Alas, now the snow is back and it is not expected to get above freezing til Friday.

Amazing Grace
(Click)

By John Newton

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.
.
’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, .
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed!
.
Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
.
The Lord has promised good to me,
His Word my hope secures;
He will my Shield and Portion be,
As long as life endures.
.
Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.
.
The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, Who called me here below,
Will be forever mine.
.
When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we’d first begun.

Amazing Grace! How sweet the sound......I love this song.

Thanks, Mac.

When my Dad was in the hospital, before the move to hospice, a licensed music therapist with a harp on wheels came in and asked if we would like a couple tunes. I told her my folks used to sing in the choir and could she play a couple hymns. She played Amazing Grace and In The Garden....I completely lost it. It was beautiful.

I don't know if you've seen it on the news, but a chaplain from the Korean War will be posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor this week.

Chaplain Captain the Reverend Emil Kapaun, a Roman Catholic Priest from Pilsen, Kansas, was captured by the Chinese while serving with the 8th Cavalry Regiment at Unsan in November 1950. For the next six months, he worked tirelessly to feed his fellow prisoners, scavenging for food in nearby fields and stealing from the guards and the supply huts. In addition, he saw to their spiritual needs, helping them resist the Chinese and North Korean attempts at brainwashing the prisoners into betraying their countrymen; even defying orders and holding mass on Easter Sunday 1951.

On May 23, 1951, his body weakened by pneumonia and dysentery, Chaplain Kapaun died in the Pyoktong POW Camp. His last words were to a friend and fellow prisoner, LT Mike Dowe, "Hey, Mike, don't worry about me. I'm going to where I always wanted to go and I'll say a prayer for all of you."

Additionally, the Roman Catholic Church is currently examining the possibility of sainthood for Chaplain Kapaun.

A Blessed Lord’s Day To You And Yours!

Genuflectimus non ad principem sed ad Principem Pacis!

Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)

A fire burned a fabric shop, upstairs apartments and a neighboring boutique Saturday evening, causing a partial roof collapse that killed a firefighter and injured a colleague who was trying to rescue him, officials said.

Captain Michael Goodwin, 53, was killed in the line of duty, Amy Daly, a nursing supervisor at Jefferson University Hospitals, told The Associated Press. Goodwin was a 29-year veteran of the fire department. The second firefighter, 28-year-old Andrew Godlinski, was hospitalized with burns, officials told The Philadelphia Inquirer. Officials say he was injured while trying to rescue Captain Goodwin.

Prayers of peace going out for Captain Goodwin and his family. Prayers also for Firefighter Godlinski and his family.

And prayers for your son and his family, and his Mom, that his chest pains and dizzyness are just minor.

Shaw F-16 pilot dies in Afghanistan

SUMTER, SC (WIS) -

An American F-16 fighter jet from Shaw Air Force Base crashed in eastern Afghanistan Wednesday, killing the U.S. pilot.

Capt. James Michael Steel, 29, of Tampa, Fla., died in the crash near Bagram Airfield, according to the Department of Defense. He was assigned to the 77th Fighter Squadron.

According to Stars and Stripes, the plane was on final approach to land after an air support mission when it crashed about 10 miles from the runway.

Steel graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 2006, completed pilot training and arrived at Shaw in June 2010. He was the chief of mobility for the 77th Fighter Squadron.

"Our condolences and prayers are with the family, friends and squadron members of Capt. Steel," said Col. Clay Hall, 20th Fighter Wing commander. "This is a difficult time for Shaw AFB, but we are focused on taking care of the Steel family, our Airmen and continuing to execute the mission."

Steel comes from a family with deep roots in the Air Force. His father, Maj. Gen. Robert Steel, was commandant of the National War College at Fort McNair in Washington, DC until January of 2011. He spoke at his son's graduation from the 63rd Fighter Squadron in 2009.

Steel's mother and five other siblings all have Air Force ties as well.

NATO said in a statement Thursday that the cause of the crash is still being investigated, but initial reporting indicates that there was "no insurgent activity in the area" when the plane went down.

RIP Captain.
