Walt Disney Co. expected to begin layoffs (No longer the 'Happiest Place on Earth')
Los Angeles Times ^ | 04/05/2013 | Daniel Miller

The Walt Disney Co. is expected to begin layoffs in the coming weeks, with the cuts centering on the company's movie studio, a source with knowledge of the matter has confirmed.

The cuts, first reported by trade publication Variety, are said to be the result of an internal corporate review.

Layoffs are expected to affect the studio's marketing and home entertainment divisions, and possibly other areas, according to a source. Variety reported that the cuts would also be made in the production department.

It's not clear how many reductions there will be at the company. Reuters reported Thursday that cuts would be made in the studio's animation department and in Disney's consumer productions division.

A representative for Burbank-based Disney did not respond to requests for comment.

On Wednesday, Disney's recently acquired Lucasfilm Ltd. subsidiary announced that its video game unit, LucasArts, will no longer develop games. As a result, the company said there were "layoffs across the organization," though Lucasfilm did not say how many employees at San Francisco-based LucasArts would be affected.

In January, the Los Angeles Times reported that Disney's video game division had laid off 50 workers and closed an Austin, Texas, game studio.

Good morning lovely lady.

All that a sentient being has to do is ask the question, "if this was a Bush presidency, how would the story be different?" Then objectively provide the answer.

Good post.

God forbid people look at their financials before jumping to conclusions...

Revenue up four straight years
Net Income and EPS up four straight years
Cash flow yp for four straight years and was $8 billion in FY12
The stock has doubled since 2011
Dividends up 71% from 2010

Financially they are just fine. Knowing what I know about how Disney works it could just be that they actually completed a strategic review and found a better way to operate...

Knowing what I know about the economy and our marxist government I'd say Disney Corp. is reading the tea leaves and in the months ahead we'll be seeing so many layoffs forthcoming in that iconic entertainment entity that even Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs will be included in the purge.

I suppose that’s possible assuming there is a slowdown which is debatable.

I do find it hilariously inconsistent the people of this thread who blame the collapsing JCP stock price on “homosexual Ellen” and also blame the Disney layoffs on the same yet their stock has doubled...

Walt’s nephew, Roy, and Stanley Gold, forced him out, a few years back. Later on, he had a program on CNBC, “Conversations With Michael Eisner”, a totally egocentric show, for the host. One week it finished DEAD LAST in ratings, for all programs in the entire spectrum of television. Pity/s.

".....yet their (Disney's) stock has doubled."

Maybe the bigwigs at Disney are smart enough to figure out that with bogus printed money flooding the market (resulting in the dollar's worth being down to 70 cents at the moment) that the value of stocks right now is about as indicative of prosperity (even recovery) as is the government's phony unemployment figures.

During my time at the Tragic Kingdom, there were certain areas “backstage” that had to be maintained by female custodians. The male custodial staff refused to work there, due to the harassment. No action was ever taken against the offenders. During the same era, my buddy was ordered to take down a discreetly posted picture of Claudia Schiffer, in his cubicle, because it constituted the possibility of creating a hostile work environment for any females who MAY have been offended, by it.

I think Arizona will go blue before Texas...

It already is. Take a look at our congressional delegation. Majority Democrats. They control the redistricting process because the state GOP is stupid and allowed it.

Hi, all you allegedly pro-America FReepers who jump on these threads to rag on Disney...? Here’s news for you: the Walt Disney company has contributed more to American Art — with a big “A” — than any other single person or company except MGM.

Its achievements in film, television, animation, writing, music, architecture, music, and design are unmatched by any other single entity. Maybe the Louvre. Maybe the Vatican museum or the Cairo museum. But I’d rather go to Disneyland myself. And bazillions of customers around the world agree with me.

I worked at Disney Studios in Burbank for five years, and I’d go back in a minute.

I appreciate your well earned sentiment. In my 11 years working at The Anaheim Theme Park, I saw Walt’s Masterpiece Legacy tarnished by folks who weren’t worthy of shining his shoes. Both of our perspectives are valid, we probably saw two different sides of the same coin. Thanks.

For some reason, I imagined a picture of various Disney characters on Skid Row, with some of the princesses “working prostitution”, under the watchful gaze of a pimped-out dwarf; the Lady and the Tramp, with a few Dalmatian puppies, perusing a knocked over trash can; Cruella DeVille as a bag lady pushing a shopping cart; Captain Hook as a handicapped beggar; and, of course, the mice and rats all have Mickey’s ears.

I know what you’re talking about. Disney attracts more than its fair share of untalented grifters. (Hi, Jeffrey Katzenberg!)

And they are chiselers, there’s no doubt about it. They lowball vendors to death, knowing companies will take a loss just to get into business with Disney. When I worked there, they had their own rules about overtime — i.e., they didn’t “believe” in paying overtime. Um, the state of California disagreed. People filed labor lawsuits, Disney paid the fines but admitted no wrongdoing — and next week, it was business as usual.

But... still. I got more out of it than it cost me. There really was something magic about being part of it all.

Am looking forward to that small-minded placeholder, Iger, retiring. Hoping they hand the whole works over to Lasseter.

I used to have to pay vendors - I felt very sorry for the little guys. They would be starving to death, by the time they got paid. Don’t forget Mr. Ovitz. In his short time, he was paid a fortune. Another thing that cheesed me off was when they gave Gretzky a Bentley, just for being a valued opponent of The Ducks. That same year I got an “above average”rating on my review, and 10 cents an hour pay increase. I’m glad your stay did you well. I have many memories, some magic, some....not so much ;)

You do realize, don’t you, that the stock market is artificialy high, primarily because Bernanke is keeping interest rates artificially low, thus leaving investers with nowhere else to put their money than in the stock market. That bubble will burst, sooner than later my friend, and the stock market being high is a Trojan Horse of the first order, artificially masking the crummy economy that lurks underneath.

Wall Street profits for the moment are high (until that day investers start tossing themselves out of building windows as in the Great Depression). However, where the true reality of our economy lies, on Main Street, shops are closed all over our nation, bankruptcy is at an all time high, and no one has a discretionary dollar to spend at Disney or anywhere else, if you have the misfortune to belong to what was once called the middle class. The middle class Obama purports to be a champion of as he wrecks it to achievve his socialist aims. So keep your blinders on, my FRiend, until one day you too will be directly affected by the Obama regime’s economic policies; you will not be immune.

***the Disney corporation and the sycophant media are still covering for the Marxist Obama***

When will conservatives wake up to the fact that the money they spend at Disney parks / movies is being used to waste the Constitution and support a ruling oligarchy? ...and, look at the filth on Disney television [ABC, ESPN, Family... etc.

THAT is family entertainment?

Corrections to above post:

artificialy = artificially

and achievve = achieve

Typo time.
A mere slip of the finger.
