Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has promised to filibuster new gun control legislation, putting up a significant roadblock to Democratic efforts to move forward on the measure this week.
McConnell is now the 15th Senator to sign on to the Republican gun control filibuster, an effort that has been spearheaded by conservative Sens. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), Ted Cruz (R-Texas), and Mike Lee (R-Utah).
As the top Senate Republican, McConnell's support gives the filibuster a much higher chance of success, imperiling the already-delicate bipartisan negotiations on new gun control measures.
McConnell's promise to filibuster also deflates criticism from the more moderate wing of the GOP. During an appearance on CBS's Face The Nation Sunday, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) seemed bewildered by the idea of the filibuster, and called on Republicans to allow debate over the bill.

That just means he's negotiating with the turd administration for a higher price for selling out.
We should rally round McConnell and thank him. We rage and rant when they fail, we should heartily praise when they do the right thing.
It won’t provide him cover, but it may make him rethink conservative support on other issues important to us.
Being Minority Leader often does mean leading from behind, as in herding...for example cats. Paul has really done a great and courageous job.
Let’s get McConnell back on our team by thanking him:
You can email him or call either DC or Kentucky to voice your approval.
Senator McConnell -
I have just learned that you promised to filibuster new gun control legislation.
Thank you! I welcome your leadership on this very important issue.
I wonder if mccain didn’t pick Palin so she could be held back. They were afraid of what she’d do after serving a few terms as governor. So they put her out early so she could be destroyed quicker.
It took a while, but even the RINOcrats will defend the Bill of Rights in a pinch!
Sorry, but I don’t buy the McConnell late conversion. I suspect that he’s pretending to oppose gun control in order to make a bigger impact when he sells out Paul, Cruz and the others and - once again - reaches a grand compromise with the Dems and RINOs. He’ll say it’s time for everyone to get on board and that any hold-out is being a divisive and obstructionist. He’ll throw the real conservatives under the bus to secure his leadership position. McConnell needs to go.
Sorry, but I dont buy the McConnell late conversion”
I don’t either. Never ever trust these fake GOP leaders. I’m sick to death of McJuan and Grahamnesty and what gang of - insert some phony # - and how they cozy up to the Dems. Upchuck Schumer and McJuan at the border last week - remember when Juan said “OK, we’ll secure the darn border”.
Call the other senators that we KNOW are on our side. Tell them you supported them with donations or some such. I called Ron Johnson, OUR Wisconsin Senator and he’s on board.
PS:VerySadAmerican - welcome to FR!!
Before we get all excited about Mitch unexpectedly growing cojones, let us remember that he up for reelection next year. It's about time he started running to the right.
What a shame we don't have term limits.
Yeh I’d love to see McStain call Mitchie the Kid a Wacko bird and survive. LOL!! He might still be in the Senate but his status committee assignments would be gone.
Great job, let’s herd these cats back to the Constitution.
I shouldn’t have left out Rand Paul, but I suspect you’ve already thanked him, no?
I liked Romney’s skill at promoting ideas and debate, and that won me over into a supporter.
But, I was worried about what he would do as president. I sure hope this next time we can get an actual conservative who also has those same skills I liked.
Because otherwise, most of the conservative candidates each time just don’t have those abilities.
Do I dare believe this will happen? I will wait and see....
Putting his finger in the air made his scrotum loosen up.
Why, yes, let’s.
Thanks, McConnell, for sticking your finger to the wind and being the 15th to (finally) hitch your wagon onto the side that’s sticking up for the Constitution and specially the 2nd Amend; which, in part, reads ‘shall no be infringed’.”
That’s a naive view of what a legislative leader does. We should be positive and reinforce his good behavior. We’re fast to criticize and we shouldn’t be slow to praise.
This is a good thing. Is it perfect? No, but it is a good thing.
Now, ask yourself, “Do I want more or less of this type of behavior?”
What harm is there in sincerely thanking him? This is a fight that we could have lost and could still lose. Do you really want more gun laws layered on top of the thousands that lay like a trap or minefield for lawful gun users?
I’ll believe he’s going to filibuster when I see it.
Excuse me if I don’t believe a word out of a RINO’s mouth. They’ve screwed us too many times.
His nuggets only come out when he’s running for re-election.
