Bipartisan deal reached on gun background checks
Washington Post ^ | 04/10/2013 | Ed O'Keefe

A bipartisan group of senators has struck a deal to expand gun background checks to all commercial sales — whether at gun shows, via the Internet or in any circumstance involving paid advertising, according to Senate aides familiar with the talks.

The proposed agreement would be more stringent than current law, which requires checks only when purchases are made through a licensed dealer, but less than originally sought by President Obama and congressional Democrats, who were seeking to expand background checks to nearly every kind of sale.

The agreement should secure enough bipartisan support for the Senate to proceed to debate on an overarching bill that would expand background checks, make gun trafficking a federal crime for the first time and bolster federal funding for school security plans. Senate Democratic leaders have said they will permit senators of both parties to introduce amendments to the measure.

The deal on background checks was struck by Sens. Joe Manchin III (D-W. Va.), Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.), Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) and Patrick Toomey (R-Pa.), who will introduce the proposal as an amendment to the current gun bill under consideration in the Senate, aides said.

Soon you will need “proof of registry” in order to buy ammo, thus negating the exclusion of “grandfathered”, presently owned firearms.

They can call it a deal.

It’s a sellout.

Toomey will pay for this at the polls.

Ayn Rand: “In any compromise between good and evil, it is only evil that can profit.”

This doesn't pass the stink test - there is something fishy going on here.

All commercial sales already require a background check so, as presented here, this bill would change nothing.
And we know that's not going to happen.

So what is the real purpose of the bill?

There is probably some sort of Clintonion weasle-word parsing in the specifics that will enable future expansion of the government's powers to control and/or restrict gun sales and transfers.

You can trust these politicians about as far as you could toss Queen Michelle, uphill and against the wind.

Throughout this whole debate, it has amazed me how much misinformation is spread and how completely wrong people are when they try to present the facts.

As you stated, you CANNOT buy a firearm from a legit FFL, without the checks. If an FFL sells you a gun without one, then there are laws already on the books that deal with that.

The republicans in the Senate are getting played again, as usual. Either that, or Reid has something on them. Hoping that 2014 will usher in some new blood.

The current makeup of the House is 232(R), 201(D) and 2 vacancies.

Boner would have to get 217 to pass it. He wold have to get ALL 201 Dems and 16 Pubbies to do that. Many Dems are from conservative districts and not likely to go along, so it would be a tough row to hoe........

To put the phrase "gay marriage" into the dictionary, the statists had to delete a word already there.

It appears they deleted the word "infringe."

They really didn’t have to cave. The majority of the people are with us. The fact that 32 guns per minute have been purchased under obama tells us everything we need to know.

If you buy a gun on the Internet, it has to go through the NICS check.

Not if the seller is in your state.

Under this proposal, there would be no check if you found it from a free advertising site.

Their goal is an undeclared registry. They have also found our Achilles heel — ammo. All the guns in world do no good if you can’t get ammo or components to load your own ammo. Expect some legislation to make it harder to buy ammo.

Right. After all, there are thousands of politicians and politician wannabes out there just salivating over the opportunity to take their turn at the trough.
