A bid by Porter Airlines to fly jets to the Toronto island airport drew sharp reaction from city councillors, with many likening the expected debate to the epic battle over a bridge that swept David Miller into office.
Porter is hoping to extend the main runway at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport by 168 metres on each side, but it needs the city and the federal government to revisit a tripartite agreement that currently bans jet aircraft. In a statement, the Toronto Port Authority, which operates the airport, said it will not consider any changes until the matter is dealt with by city council.
Mayor Rob Ford was asked about the issue on Tuesday before the announcement and said only that he supports Porter.

Aviation ping.
Canada Ping!
Chicago had the same thing for small and medium sized jets, Meigs Field, right on the lakefront but RMD (kid Daley) then mayor tore it out before he quit. If Mayor tippy toes was smart he’d restore the place.
Porter flies from downtown Toronto to Midway.
Lived in the area by Midway serviced by Southwest and others which I know is the prefered gateway into the city. Not sure but when Meigs was open but I think it could handle the 24 pass Falcon which for corporate air was great 5 mins and your downtown. Ohare (Orchard field) unless your business is on the far northside is a hassle and some steep taxi fares along with other traffic problems and hours in traffic.
Right now the Island airport can handle the Citation and a few other executive jets, longest runway is 4000’. Pearson airport is great if you’re in the west end of the city or the western ‘burbs, but to get downtown it’s a traffic nightmare and a cab will run at least $60.
Same in Chicago from Ohare depending upon where your going but $50 US is not unheard of here. Fare is about half that from or to the “Loop” at Midway. The thing about both Chicago airports is that they are serviced by “L” or light rail If you know the city it’s the way to go from the “Loop”. But the service to Midway shuts down at midnight as there are no scheduled outgoing or incomming flights from there.
That's going to be one wide runway!
LOL yep. The plan is to add about 1000’ to the length of the strip.
