Thanks very much for the link, Covenantor!

I read "The Great Escape" by Paul Brickhhll as a child and have a copy of the 1964 film in my collection. As a boy, I read every POW escape book I could get my hands on. "The Wooden Horse" by Eric Williams was a favorite.

Getting back to Stalag Luft III, I thought the murder of the fifty was one of the most craven atrocities committed by a regime characterized by countless atrocities. I will post a tribute to Flight Lieutenant Broderick, probably in the Sunday night Hall of Heroes thread of the FR Canteen.

Again thanks very much for the link and Welcome to the Canteen!

I also read both as a school boy. “The Wooden Horse” struck me at the time as being a audaciously clever and bold “in your face” effort.

Best regards,
Cov

ROCKUMENTARY: APRIL 13, 1972

Where were you on Thursday, April 13, 1972?

I was about to become the Battalion Motor Officer of the 58th Signal Battalion at Fort Lewis, just south of Tacoma. I had never been west of Niagara Falls, so this cross country move was an adventure for me. I had served for four months under a Motor Officer who had been a helicopter warrant that had gone through shake-and-bake and come out a captain. He wanted to fly again, so I ended up getting his job. I was a second looie filling a captain’s slot.

On weekends, I went into Seattle and hung out at KING in my attempts to infiltrate a 50 kilowatt rock and roll station, an effort that eventually succeeded. I was Mr. Rock Trivia, and that permitted me access to the roster of DJ’s. Pretty soon I was getting calls at all hours asking, “What year was this song? What else did the songwriters write or the producers produce? Who was down the hall in the bathroom when it was recorded, and was he doing #1 or #2?” I could usually answer these questions off the top of my head.

Let’s cue the Rockumentary theme!

San Remo Golden Strings: “Festival Time”

Jay Siegel of the Tokens did the background vocals for this remake of the Tokens’ hit from 1961. The differences are minor, to include a tuba replacing the original clarinet line. It came in at #10 this week.

Robert John: “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”

On the surface it sounds like someone sick in bed, but if you stay to the end, it’s about two people having sex. It came in at #8 this week.

Chakachas: “Jungle Fever”

The Army took me out of the Philadelphia area, got me to the West Coast and gave me the opportunity to go farther than just college radio.

Usually you have to spend time in minor markets like Possum Breath, Wyoming before you get a shot at a Top 20 market. I got in on the first try which was a huge break, but also my downfall two years later.

It was a good experience.

If you remember the Tony Macaulay songbook weekend I did last year, you’ll remember this as one of his last successes before his star faded. Marilyn McCoo Davis had an amazing voice. It came in at #64 on its way to the Top 10.

The Fifth Dimension: “Last Night I Didn’t Get to Sleep”
