Thatchers Last Wish - Another Clunker from the Iron Lady
Forbes ^ | 4/14/13 | Eamonn Fingleton

Posted on 04/14/2013 10:07:25 AM PDT by goodnesswins

The news today is that a group of supporters of Margaret Thatcher are pushing a plan to establish a museum and library as a permanent memorial to her. It is clear that the plan, which would establish a first in British politics, has been long in the making and that it not only had Thatcher’s approval but she herself largely instigated the idea. This is another clunker from the Iron Lady – a final terrible idea from a woman who, pace all current hagiography, will be remembered as one of the worst British political leaders of modern times.

Eamonn Fingleton (born 19 August 1948) is an Irish journalist and author. First wife and two children killed in a car crash in 1974 in London. Remarried, and has authored multiple books on Japan this-and-that....

Not the unbiased critiquing skills or rep that I’d expect of a Thatcher-basher.

Forbes article about Mrs Thatcher ‘who will be remembered as one of the worst British political leaders of modern times’ reminds me of Churchill’s comment about democracy being the worst system of government except for all the others which have been tried from time to time.

What a crock of BS. I lived in Europe and did a lot of business in the UK(or tried to) most of the Thatcher years. Without Thatcher and her reforms of unions, finance and govt compnaies the UK would look like Romania before the fall.
When I first went there the unions were in control. Most of their industries looked like 1890’s and the main way the business made money was by buying and selling companies, not products. The unions would have not have completed the ruin without the voters and Thatcher stepping in.
Even without the Falklands war..she was a great leader and should be credited with helping to destroy the evil empire..a great human rights achievement.
If the UK doesn’t want her library..then build it in a remaining free state in the US..like Texas where her Grandchildren live.

Eamonn Fingleton has a single-minded focus on trade surpluses as the primary indicator of economic health. He criticized American trade policy for not being more aggressive with Japan vis-a-vis its protectionist policies, which persist today. Obviously Japan has had two decades of economic stagnation while generating large trade surpluses every single year of those decades. During Thatcher’s reign, the UK’s GDP per capita went from 66% to 77% of US GDP per capita. In that time frame, highly-protectionistic France’s GDP per capita went from 98% to 95% of the US number. Her trade policies have endured and by 2011, the UK’s number was 80% of the US number compared to protectionistic France’s 84%.

Protectionism doesn’t explain why countries are rich. Most countries in the world outside of the English-speaking countries of the West are like Japan - highly protectionistic. The Latin American countries and most of the Third World are even more protectionistic than Japan, but how many of these countries are major export powers or rich?

Forbes is RIDDLED with LEFTISTS

Fingleton might or might not a leftist, but he's a definitely a mercantilist. He believes imports represent a loss and exports represent a profit. He's always going on about how Japan's two decades of near-zero economic growth don't mean anything - at least it generated trade surpluses and stayed true to its protectionistic policies.

If he were honest, he'd display a little more about the current accounts deficit, but he's a hack.

He's saying that Thatcher lay the foundations of today's British trade deficits, given that her trade policies, as well as her rejection of government subsidies for private industry, are now settled policy whether Labour or Conservative governments are in power.

“Forbes is RIDDLED with LEFTISTS.....FIRE THEM STEVE...it makes YOU LOOK BAD!! Stand up for what’s RIGHT, not what’s “fair and Balanced”.

I had to give up my subscription about eight years ago.

My favorite reading used to be Business Week, Forbes, and Fortune. Business week was the first to go. In my mailbox now, only Fortune remains, and it is sometimes hanging on by a thread.

“then build it in a remaining free state in the US..like Texas where her Grandchildren live.”

Or in Hillsdale, Michigan where the only statue in the USA of Thatcher stands on the grounds of Hillsdale College.

If Thatcher had not won 10 Downing Street, Arthur Scargill had his plan to turn Britain communist.
