California teen dies in fatal game of 'chicken' [with a train]
UPI ^ | April 14, 2013 | KATE STANTON

Posted on 04/14/2013 10:40:44 AM PDT by grundle

Austin Price, a 15-year-old sophomore at San Lorenzo High School in San Lorenzo, Calif., died Thursday playing a game of "chicken" with two friends on the train tracks near his school, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Friday. The northbound Amtrak train hit Price when he didn't move out of the way in time -- though his two companions weren't hurt.

Principal Tovi Scruggs said the "dangerous" train tracks were a popular hang out site for students.

"It's an ongoing concern," Scruggs said. "Tragedies don't happen frequently, but we know the tracks are not staying empty."

Prince's classmates told the Chronicle that boys at their school played "chicken" there "all the time."

"People won't be by the tracks anymore," one of Price's friends said.

“It’s very important that kids realize how dangerous the tracks are," Alameda County Deputy April Luckett told reporters, adding that parents need to "reiterate that to their children that they need to stay off the tracks."

Let me guess, the train didn't chicken out and swerve at the last minute?

The poor teen probably thought it was possible that a train swerve right or left like a car can to avoid hitting him. Sorry but most kids in other countries know that trains cannot do that.

Should we ban trains now?

Well, at least he won... his two friends chickened out. Too bad he won’t be able to celebrate his victory.

I think the kid who jumped off the 10 story high building with a GI Joe parachute had more sense.

I'm sure Senator DiFi will submit legislation for "Commonsense" train registration, but Stinky Harry will make sure it goes nowhere, since he's got his fingers all over the railroad industry. Besides, I'm sure Mr. DiFi profits handsomely from the Chinese railroad industry.

When I was a wee toddler, we lived with a passenger rail line in our front yard.
This was after WWII and housing was in short supply. We learned by age 3 to stay off the RR tracks, but we did leave a few pennies.
The train went by about 50-60 mph. The Rock Island Rocket from Chicago to Peoria.

Sad. Story continues to those left behind; the families. People decide to roll the dice with their lives everyday. It's called freedom. On the other side of freedom, most try to continue their faith in life so to be with their family and friends esp, those who have a illness in appreciating each moment.

We need a Federal Registry of all children who dare one another to do things and screen them for violence and mental illness. Even though this may be costly, saving one life would be worth it and some government sponsored social worker actually might do something useful by predicting the most likely teens to fail to remove themselves quickly enough from the path of oncoming trains. And, if you disagree with this line of reasoning, you are a heartless ghoul and likely a racist.

Back when I was kids, we made our own powder.

Equal parts of carbon (or sugar) sulphur and potassium nitrate.

Your mileage may vary.

You know how many cancer stricken children there are saying their last goodbyes to their loved ones because they had no "dice" to roll? Maybe you find it comical that someone is stupid enough to expect a train to swerve to the right or left and avoid hitting him, I find it idiotic. There were NO dots on that dice. No chance. That's a fact.

My post was saying that we all cannot control human beings if you/we desire freedom. It is theirs to make a safe call or a unsafe call/roll a dice with danger/ take a risk/ take a chance. This kid made a unsafe call which cost him his life..and hurt his family...It is very sad... you go ahead and judge others...not me. This family is suffering. The kid made a bad choice. What more do you want or expect of me to say. I know people who are sick who fight to live. I even said that in my initial comments. I even said people respect life while some do not take it seriously. It looks like you're mad because you cannot control other people's views of how they should see this. No need to page me any further on this topic.

It’s easy. Just refer to them as bullet trains. And mention the NRA (National Railway Association)

We learned by age 3 to stay off the RR tracks

Indeed. Mom and dad moved above a small-town tavern when dad got his first teaching job, and my "sandbox" was in the back lot about a half a block from the C&NW double-track main. Though I'd often wandered off - and been found, thank goodness - before the move, whichever parent or relative provided the "don't go by the trains" training (pun intended) was quite successful. I still remember seeing the trains regularly going by, but I never did go close to the tracks.

Way too many people who I otherwise credit with sense have shown no clue as to how long it takes most trains to stop.

(And yes, there have even been a select few who were stunned to find out that a locomotive has no steering wheel.)

California Teen Family will sue the railroad.

a few years ago, an ATC rider was hit (and killed on a railroad track) by a train. The family said the railroad company should know that people use it for ATCing, so the railroad is at fault.

Another teen lost her legs when she fell asleep SUNBATHING on a railroad bridge. The engineer tried to stop, but couldn't. The girl's parents said the train is at fault, because the engineer didn't stop in time.

a locomotive can't stop on a dime!! (I'm a railfan, so I know that you can stop even a small engine quickly.)

I did a lot of really stupid things as a kid (a few as an adult) but never played ‘chicken’ with a train.
Lost a friend at Ft. Benning. He wanted to pick up ‘duds’ on the mortar range. “Bad idea,” I thought. Couldn’t talk him out of it.
Too bad for his family and friends, losing him because he wanted to impress his friends.
