That would put China in an awkward position. The Middle Kingdom hates to lose face, and would have to intervene in earnest. Better to have the Norks prove they’re not bluffing and give Seoul a bona fide casus beli, cross the border or something like that. Then China will be mad at the Norks over the face thing, and give only grudging help as required by their stupid pact, and a quiet green light to Seoul and Washington to smash all their guns.

How many people are going to die for an “ally” that is comprised largely of people who hate us and have no qualms about telling us they hate us to their faces?

If the Norks want the Sorks, I say we hand them over.

Norks and Sorks? I guess any Korean in the Demilitarized Zone is a Dork.

The problem with that is, as far as South Korea is concerned, a lot of people would be killed by the time they had the ability to stop it. Seoul is, what, 30 miles from the DMZ? There is no margin for error.

Seoul is target #1 for the NORKS.

I suspect a certain resident of Yorba Linda would be nodding in agreement...

A lot more people will be killed if China comes in heavy on N Korea’s side like they did last time, and entirely too many of them Americans. A lot of people will be killed regardless. It’s war.

From China’s point of view, the Korean peninsula is nothing but a pain in the ass. If the North half of it becomes an even bigger pain than it already is, it will manipulate its considerable weight to see that it’s unified under the government in South Korea, and sign a new pact with them, on condition that they refrain from being a pain in the ass in the future.

If South Korea annoys it more, however, it will unify the Peninsula under North Korean government. Americans who are in harm’s way will be mauled and destroyed as a result, but if there’s war, there will be no future uneasy truces. 55+ years of that is enough for Middle Kingdom’s limited patience. They want an end, so they can go back to pretending they’re still communists, cracking down on Falon Gong practitioners, oppressing Tibetans, and all that Middle Kingom-y type stuff thet thar.

The object, then, isn’t to spare the poor people of South Korea, who will have to bleed and suffer regardless, but to maximize North Korea’s disfavor with China. That way American lives will be saved, and in the long run, North and South Korean small folk will live free and prosper as well. This is geopolitics. It’s not pretty, but it’s inescapable.

What coinky dink! I think it's a PIA, too! And I also pretty much agree with the rest of what you said, except I think you overestimate the NORK's abilities. If the North decides to reunify "on their terms" (IE, conquer the South), they will be wiped out as a military force. And I don't think it's up to China to decide. They might be willing to go to war over Taiwan, but I highly doubt they would again for the NORKS. They don't consider them to be Chinese.

And it would be bad for business.

That’s exactly what I’m hoping, that they don’t care about the Norks. They’ll pretend to go to war for the Norks, but really just do the bare minimum and laugh behind their hands as America’s still formidable armed forces cut them to bits and somehow China can’t manage to make it all better for little Kimmy. You may have to quietly throw in Taiwan to sweeten it for China. But the less Americans dying, the better.

So our leaders won't get to capture North Korea's leaders and have them publicly denounce the One China policy? Maybe the false offer of getting rid of our anti-missile defense weapons will fool those tiny brains.

No one gives up power easily.

Yet Grasping Hold of Power

I've yet to see an exception to this rule

If we had just about anybody but Kim Unng's mental twin in the White Hut I'd feel a lot better about things. Obastard would screw up a wet dream.

China need only be reminded about how well things are going for their economy to keep them from rocking the boat. They're not predisposed these days to love the NORKs. One of the most tightly guarded borders in the world is the one between China and North Korea.

Attempted illegal entry into China there will get you shot.

Kim is past the point of no return. H must act and carry through his threat or risk the greatest shame ever.

H as in Hussein? Nothing is going to come of this. This is a feint on both sides in which the Norks will demand an economic package, our side will appear to refuse, the Norks will demand it again, and we give it over to them. And little Colonel Barackamar Hussein Obamadaffi gets to look like a strong leader who faced down a rogue regime.
