Yet, even if you buy that oversimplified view of history, as conservatives with selective memory often do, Paul completely omitted a much more important sea change, the seismic racial realignment that followed President Lyndon B. Johnson's 1964 Civil Rights Act.

In fact, Republican nominees continued to receive sizable black support; 39 percent to Dwight Eisenhower in his 1956 re-election, according to the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, and 32 percent to his vice president, Richard Nixon, in 1960.

But after conservatives nominated Sen. Barry Goldwater, who voted against the civil rights bill, to oppose Johnson in 1964, LBJ won 94 percent of the black vote. No Republican presidential candidate has received more than 15 percent of the black vote since.

Well, one thing is certain: by virtue of their presence in the audience, the Howard University students have shown a much more open mind than this foolish old Clarence.

Last week, on the Michael Medved Show, Senator Paul said he disagreed with Senator Goldwater's vote.

Goldwater knew that extending the civil rights act into the private sector would be a disaster and it has been.

Goldwater is treated as a racist but he was a founding member of the Arizona NAACP and supported a very limited version of affirmative action in the public sector.

Goldwater was honest about reaching out to blacks. He offered them a hand up instead of a hand out.

Thats something when you consider most black people are not black..
Like Obama who is as white as he is black.. many are even whiter..

Absolutely correct yet, perception is everything. The Republicans were the mean, un-cool, responsible parents who said ....no. The Democrats were radicalized into the party that wanted to give everything away, a very easy sell. Once the academic world became detached from reality and abstract thought became no longer an exercise, but an explanation for the inequities of life, the die was cast. Even highly charged people will follow the path of least resistance.

We have been prosperous too long.

You no longer have the right to refuse service to anyone for any reason.

Its amazing how many FReepers will get their panties in a twist if you suggest that a store owner be allowed to refuse blacks, asians, whites or whatever but a truly free market is an antidote to racism.

If I were to go to some neighborhoods of Detroit, I would find myself unwelcome in some businesses but I’m sure there are just as many who would happily accept my business because my money is green.

Thanks but ... really ... does it matter WHY Goldwater opposed the Civil Rights Act? No one is going to persuade me or hardly anyone that it is right that gas stations maintained separate restrooms for men, women and blacks and discriminated against them on buses and in restaurants. It was disgusting how blacks were treated. I saw it and lived through it. Yes, Goldwater could argue that the bill was flawed and Goldwater himself supported other civil rights legislation. But right now .. it doesn’t really matter anymore because no one is going to stand up and fight against that bill nor should they.
