COSTA MESA (CBSLA.com) Orange County authorities Monday were investigating the death of a 52-year-old man who blew himself up on front lawn of his home.
The incident began Sunday evening when Costa Mesa police officers responded to a residence in the 3100 block of Bermuda Drive after receiving a call from neighbors about a man laying in his front yard.
The unidentified man refused the officers help who then left the scene.
At 7:44 p.m., authorities received a second call from the same address regarding an explosion, police said.
We were in the house when we heard the explosion, Laurie, a neighbor, said. We always hear fireworks or whatever and didnt think much of it until the cops showed up.
It was unclear if the man committed suicide or if the explosion was accidental.
Neighbors say the victim had a very strong dislike for the government.
Authorities have obtained a search warrant for the property and have found at least three additional explosive device in the home, Sgt. Jerry Hildeman said.
More than a dozen surrounding residences have been evacuated as a precaution.
The explosion is being investigated by the Orange County Bomb Squad, the Huntington Beach Haz Mat Team, the FBI and the Costa Mesa Police Department.
No additional details were released.
It was an accident. He was trying to get rid of his gopher problem.
I guess authorities are trying to piece together what happened?
No additional details were released.
None needed, as you apparently released all you intended to REALLY release...
Were chickens involved? This reminds me of the Chicken Man in Georgia who blew himself (and his chickens) to kingdom come.
Hey, so do I!
Now what was this article about?
"He blowed up real good."
Sounds like he got stuck on his lawn and tried to blow himself loose with dynamite.
That’s sorta reckless.
“Neighbors say the victim had a very strong dislike for the government.” What does this have to do with it? If that was some sort of motive you would think he would target a government facility. Why not just accept that this guy was a looney and blew himself up, oh yeah then they wouldn’t be able to try and tie it to the NRA, Tea Party, Conservatives, etc.
The media is shaping a narrative incrementally. It starts off with some small "fringe" groups or people. They want to make it seem like those who dislike or distrust the government are kooks. They want to "normalize" the idea that distrust of government is insane.
They're starting small and just peppering it into otherwise unrelated stories. Over time, it will become the primary motives for any criminal activities.
Just trying to make up for the loss of the Aryan Brotherhood in the Texas DA killing.
>>It was unclear if the man committed suicide or if the explosion was accidental. Neighbors say the victim had a very strong dislike for the government.
The story made sure they put that in there but refuses to tell us about the monster who killed the babies in PA.
LOL! Took two reads but I got it. *eeewwwww* “Found another piece to the puzzle! Looks like an ear.”
You mean he has one of these?
I want one.
In some odd round about way, I suppose it means that people who have a strong dislike for the govt are likely to have explosives and belong to the tea party. Or something.
Yeah unlike those Weathermen Underground guys that Obama and the liberals love. They were/are heroes. It’s just Conservatives that are evil.
Come on, CBS, you can do better than that. I'm sure his first or last name is the same as the first or last name of someone in the Tea Party. And if he was white, I'm sure you could throw in some innuendo about how he was a White Supremacist. And where is the commentary about how things like this are happening more and more because of the "climate of fear" being whipped up by the Republicans over gun rights and gay marriage?
The cause of death is he blew himself up...what's to investigate?
Moral of the story- never stand next to a “ right wing extremist”. They are Weapons of Mass Destruction and should only be approached by qualified and well armed law enforcement officials. /s
So, obviously, someone used a "TeaParty-enator" on him (similar to a Rodenator).
Yeah, right. “His neighbors suspect him of being a racist, homophobic, gun-owning Tea Party radical like all the rest of them, but hey, it’s just what the neighbors say and so you can’t sue us for libel...” Journalism is dead in this country.
Same as with assassinating presents ~ always leftwingtards.
I’ve noticed a similar agenda at one of our local stations. They are adding the word “concealed firearm” whenever they can work it into a crime report.
But it’s okay if they do it. Just like dr. gosnell and dead babies.
Other equally useless non sequiturs the MSM could employ in their “writing” of a story such as this...
It was unclear if the man committed suicide or if the explosion was accidental. Neighbors say the victim was an avid golfer.
It was unclear if the man committed suicide or if the explosion was accidental. Neighbors say the victim kept a neat lawn.
It was unclear if the man committed suicide or if the explosion was accidental. Neighbors say the victim was fond of Little Debbie Chocolate Cupcakes.
