I prefer to do my own rough research, and the results are not much different. Go to the websites of close-knit homosexual organizations and you are likely to see a "memorial" section. I have visited the "member memorial" section for the Turtle Creek Chorale, a homosexual men's chorus in Dallas, and observed the shockingly young ages that these men die. Anyone who knew the deceased members may submit their entry to describe them. The more honest ones admit to AIDS as the cause up front; the more discrete ones only say that they "died quietly at home."

These are highly educated, financially well-off men, mind you, who are still too stupid to avoid deleterious behavior.

“This is not a disease transmittable mainly by sexual contact. It’s spread by respiratory droplets, which means you can be sitting and having a prolonged conversation with somebody and spread the disease without having sex,” said Dr. Parveen Kaur of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation.

The denial never stops.

There is nothing ‘gay’ about them. They are dirty nasty unnatural group of perverts that just don’t like other people seeing them for what they are.

I've seldom heard such a concise, accurate statement on this subject. Bravo.

“Smoking is a “marker” for an array of lifestyle choices that, in the aggregate, shorten lifespans.”

The arrogance of that statement astonishes me,Oh Perfect One.

I’m a long-time smoker who turned 80 my last birthday. My lifestyle choices would probably bore you to death.

I abhor stereotyping.

I understand that a lot of the male homosexual newspapers and magazines stopped putting ages on some of the self-inflicted victims of AIDS because of the study I mentioned. It didn't sit well with them bragging about how wonderful their lifestyle was.

Some of the other things that have historically been wiping out male homosexuals are gay-men bowel syndrome, alcoholism, suicide, drugs, and depression.

I never, never use the word "gay" to refer to these guys . . . If they were "gay," they'd be having normal relations with the opposite sex instead of exhibiting this disgusting behavior.

You’re interpreting that in the wrong way. A lot of identifiable groups whose behaviors lead to shortened lifespans also smoke cigarettes, and so the blame for shorter lifespan on average for smokers has root in other things.

A lot of alcoholics smoke, a lot of depressed people smoke, a lot of drug users smoke, a lot of homosexuals smoke. If you were to select out other contributory factors such as the above, you’d likely find that the life-shortening effects attributed to smoking are not nearly so pronounced.

It’s the substance abusers, depressives and deviant sexual subgroups who are dragging the average down.

The comments at the original news article are largely denying that this is a “gay” disease. Whatever. They did that with AIDS (still doing it, unbelievably) and where did that get them?

I look forward to this thing progressing in the “community” so that they can keep denying it. If that sounds cruel, sorry, no apology is forthcoming. These reprobates attack us and then blame US for the consequences of their debauchery.

Beyond the newborn period, the most common causes of bacterial meningitis are Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Haemophilus influenzae.

Incidence rates of N. meningitidis meningitis are generally highest in children less than five years of age and in adolescents.

Meningitis due to S. pneumoniae occurs most commonly in the very young and the very old, with an estimated incidence rate of 17 cases per 100,000 population in children less than five years of age.

Though H. influenzae meningitis is rare in adolescents and adults, rates of meningitis due to are highest in children less than five years of age, with an estimated incidence rate of 31 cases per 100,000.

All three of these organisms are respiratory pathogens. They are spread from person to person by close contact with respiratory secretions.

So, by your theory then, God punishes homosexuals by smiting unrelated children with meningitis?

Awwww. Large-scale statistical analysis is not, in spite of the incredibly delicate sensitivities of our time, an issuance of personal judgment. It's hard for many people to understand, but the numbers don't lie, if the statisticians are honest - and they are, because it's a matter of keeping their company solvent and themselves employed.

However, the numbers are not about any particular YOU, but about millions upon millions of ALL Y'ALL. Just as the statistics to not predict the life of any individual homosexual, they also do not predict the life of any individual smoker.

God’s punishment is not the question at this point.

The question is whether these people already had a compromised immune system because of homosexuality.

If so, then it is similar to other illnesses that were actually a lot worse in AIDS gays.

First, were they HIV positive to AIDS positive. That’s important to know. We don’t have info on that yet.

Second, was there some other NEW something that lowered their normal immunity in relation to the body’s ability to resist meningitis? Remember that the HIV virus only became the focus of a search because of those in the gay community dying of cancers, pneumonia, etc. at an alarming rate.

The fact that there was a cluster of gay deaths with meningitis in New York says that someone should be looking for an underlying cause until they rule that out.

I’ve read other articles on bacterial meningitis and agree with the sentiment of your post that this is not some new “gay” disease. It is dangerous and outbreaks occur in various populations. There recently was an outbreak in the gay population in New York and various media sources on both sides of the political spectrum sensationalized that outbreak for their own political reasons. The real issue here for me — and I recognize I’m probably in a small minority on this thread — is how the media and various groups use outbreaks like this to push a political position.

In the case of bacterial meningitis, I doubt that AIDS matters one whit. As I said in an earlier post, even the US Army loses its cool when there is an outbreak. In retrospect, while I was caught up in one outbreak, I was near enough to another outbreak, near a military preschool, to get real nervous about it.

As soon as they knew about it, Army medical gave shots in that case to over 200 people with even a vague possibility of exposure, within just a few hours. At the time this just amazed me.

The biggest concern with an AIDS situation would be the fear of the development of an antibiotic resistance evolving in the bacteria. Only three cases of resistant meningitis have been detected in the US about a decade ago, all in Minnesota: a young child, a college student, and an adult who died. Since then, cases are now regularly screened for resistance.

If these homosexuals had a resistant form, it would be known by now.

The point is about immunity.

Do you know that these victims were not immune deficient?

I don’t. No one’s addressed that yet.

And, they used to say the same thing about pneumonia and Kaposis sarcoma among homosexuals in that they looked for an oddity in those presenting problems.

It was actually an underlying deficiency caused by an entirely different vector.

It is the CLUSTER that is the cause of concern, yefrag.

"Interestingly, most of the decreased life expectance for smokers is not due to smoking-specific illness. Smoking is a “marker” for an array of lifestyle choices that, in the aggregate, shorten lifespans."

Yeah, like working night shifts and overnight shifts, being in the infantry (no sleep), being a "male," etc. Insurance companies probably treat feces-eaters as being more pleasant to work with and less of a claims risk than smokers.

My point is that meningitis transfers efficiently through any group of people in close proximity to each other, typically young children, because their symptoms are not as pronounced as they are for adults.

Unlike the diseases you mentioned, that were noticeable because they were typically rare among healthy adults, meningitis almost always clusters. You might as well ask if a group of people suddenly developed flu, if it was influenced by their being immuno-suppressed. Maybe they were, but it doesn’t really matter except in their severity of symptoms.

There are typically about 3,000 meningitis cases in the US every year, with about a 10% mortality rate. This figure is pretty stable, the bulk of them being young children.

I’m not saying universally, of course, because of HIV and (blood borne) Hepatitis C, which are most certainly associated with homosexuals as a subset of those infected(*); but not meningitis.

That cluster could have just as likely been among church goers who attended a pot luck picnic where someone with the disease made a big bowl of tasty potato salad. Or a public drinking fountain at the park.

(*) 10% of the population of Egypt has Hep-C, which was caused by a humanitarian effort to vaccinate against a particularly nasty water borne parasite. They reused needles.

So, because it could have been the same with church goers at a picnic, it makes sense not to pursue an underlying cause for a meningitis cluster among members of a group that recent history shows were killed in alarming numbers by another hidden disease with different presenting illnesses.

And this group is notorious for unsafe, unhealthy practices.

What you are looking for, in this case, is not an “underlying cause”, but whether or not the pathogen is different in any way, increasing its communicability or virulence, which right now is critical information.

And yet, from *that* perspective, people with AIDS *are* of greater concern, not because of their behavior, but because they have suppressed immune systems, which *can* create a much better environment for the development of antibiotic resistant bacteria.

What this means is that in practice, while they have to be given antibiotics, because of their greater susceptibility to infectious diseases, they must be very carefully monitored to insure that they are not overused, underused, or used inappropriately—which gives rise to resistant bacteria in anyone, but especially them.

Such antibiotic controls will be a very big part of medicine in the future because there are now so many dangerous resistant bacteria out there that society is skating on thin ice.

As I mentioned, as of yet there has been only one known outbreak of drug resistant meningitis, so it is definitely on the watch list.

I don't know if they did. There's a homosexual magazine called POV that used to have obits, but they got gun shy because "normal" people were gleaning their obit ages . . . it was almost exclusively male oriented since the percentage of AIDS carriers is men.

Good question though . . . I wonder if the STDs, drugs, depression, alcoholism, and violence figures are available for them as well.
