Amid shock at Marathon, a rush to help strangers
Boston Globe ^ | 04/16/2013 | David Abel

The woman’s eyes stared vacantly into the sky.

The runners had been bounding in, beaming with relief. On both sides of Boylston Street, hundreds of spectators still had packed the area, many cheering with hoarse voices for the late finishers surging in, scores of them every minute. An elderly volunteer greeting runners kept repeating this mantra: “You’re all winners.”

When the first boom shattered the bliss and the haze of white smoke washed over the finish line, I could see in the eyes of the woman what had happened. She wasn’t breathing. She wasn’t moving. Her eyes appeared lifeless as she lay beside the metal barriers on the sidewalk, where dozens of people were sprawled on the concrete, their limbs mangled, blood and broken glass everywhere.

I posted something similar yesterday, but this bears repeating. As someone here on FR said, its everyday people - regardless of party line - that make this country great. When sh*it hits the fan, we step up. God bless the victims, their families, and those who bravely rushed in to help.

AP: Washington. White Hut Press Release on Boston Attack

“My fellow communists, liberals, progressives, socialists, fascists, anarchists, union thugs, and Chicagoland gang members, it is with a heavy heart and great sadness that I speak to you today from the Great White Hut. Sadness, not because of the loss of life and injuries suffered by Bostonians, but sadness because I had just jerked a 10 foot putt for a 12 on the 7th at Congressional when I was informed of the tragedy.

Upon hearing the catastrophic news from the only Secret Service agent who wasn’t hitting on the drink-cart girl, I broke down in tears and wept in the strong warm arms of my main ‘body man’ Reggie Love.’ We stayed like that for more than an hour until I composed myself.

I immediately contacted Eric Holder, the Attorney General Racist, and was told that the initial information from Boston indicated the attack was the work of the ultra-rightwing ARA - the Amish Republican Army - a heavily armed and extremely violent domestic terrorist group centered in Blue Balls, Pennsylvania.

I immediately instructed the Attorney Racist to lay siege to their compound. Heavily armed with AR-15s the Amish terrorists violently attacked our valiant forces led by Homeland Security Dyke-in-Chief Janet ‘Big Sis’ Napolitano. ‘Big Sis’ reports that the ARA compound was counter-attacked by artillery, 40 millions rounds of armor piercing high caliber ammunition and nuclear weapons. The ARA was completely destroyed.

Now that the guilty parties have been dealt with and crushed, I am free to return to Congressional and finish my round. In my absence I have ceded command of the armed forces to my Vice-President, ‘Crazy Joe Biden’. All Americans, except for bible-thumping, gun-toting Christian clingers should sleep easily tonight knowing that MY country is secure and in good hands."

I’m surprised that with this being the Boston Marathon and all that we haven’t had any big names pop up among the injured and dead. No Hollywood or Political A-listers mentioned at all. Maybe their security detail kept them away.

I saw a video of a camera man from the Boston Globe taking a picture over the barrier, then, holding the camera in one hand, helping to move the blood splattered barrier with the other hand.

From a different article, further down your linked page:

Liz Norden, a mother of five, had just finished hauling groceries into her Wakefield home Monday afternoon when her cellphone rang.
“Ma, I’m hurt real bad,” said her 31-year-old son
It was her second boy, who had gone with his older brother to watch a friend run in the Boston Marathon.

.. Within the next two hours, amid frantic phone calls and a panicked drive into Boston, Norden pieced together the horrific truth that will forever change her two sons’ lives — and her own. Each of the brothers lost a leg, from the knee down. One was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess, while the other was at Brigham and Women’s Hospital ..

Scott Brown said he got a message from Doug Flutie yesterday, who said something to the effect of, "where do I sign up to go get them?"

Despite his questionable political activities, that's why he's popular around here.

Along these lines, if you can read French there's an interesting story at Le Monde. It has a video posted by a Chinese spectator, apparently there at the finish line to cheer a team from a Chinese company participating in the race, when the bombs go off. All of the subsequent video shows people shaken but calm, police quickly taking control of the situation and evacuating people in an orderly way, a fire truck getting through without impediment, etc. The witness said "I sensed at this point that this country is powerful, that its people are strong." (Presumably he thinks in China people would have reacted chaotically and police would be nowhere to be found.) An interesting perspective at a time when so many are eager to embrace the idea of American decline.
