The father of Martin William Richard today said he is trying to both grieve the death of his 8-year-old son, who was killed at the Boston Marathon bombings, and help his wife and daughter recover from injuries they suffered during the terrorist attack on Monday.

Let's re-read the article again together, shall we? Paragraph 2 says: ...Bill Richard said in a statement released this afternoon.
Since when does a general statement that he could have dictated to a friend over the phone constitute talking directly to the media?
Now...jump down to paragraph 7: According to a Richard family spokesman...
This tells me that the father authorized some "family spokesman" to confirm or deny a few details related to this tragedy.

I’m sure that he isn’t thinking as clearly as we are able to now, because we are so fortunate not to have experienced what he has. Surely, we can all find it in our hearts to understand his pain and pray for his recovery, and the recovery of those of his family who are still with us.
I PRAY for his family...what a HELL...but I wouldn’t talk to the press yet....
