Boston IED bomb devices with ball bearings are used by terrorists in Afghanistan
The Daily Mail - UK ^ | 4-16-13 | Daniel Bates

The two bombs that killed three people and injured at least 176 at the Boston Marathon on Monday were made from six-liter pressure cookers crammed with shards of metal, nails and ball bearings and stashed in black backpacks, police sources revealed today.

The cruelly-designed bombs have 'frequently' been used in Afghanistan, India, Nepal and Pakistan, according to a 2010 Homeland Security Department pamphlet - hinting at the origins of the bombers behind the worst terrorist atrocity in the U.S. since 9/11.

This is Obama’s doing, he squandered resources trying to attack his own political enemies instead of keeping his eye on the ball.

Indeed the last 2 near misses should have waken him up to this threat. Instead DHS still focuses its efforts on watching TEA paryers instead of the proven Islamic terrorist threat.

NPR is going all black knight ala monty python to blame a domestic group at the exclusion of terrorists.

the medium is the message.

if npr says it then it must be “it”.

Gunpowder (black powder) or smokeless powder. Electrically fired, so there’s a battery and a short circuit/hot wire in there somewhere.

You’re right - a successful terrorist attack where the bomber gets away will do as well for our news media as if the perp were a little old white male tea partier in an american flag sweatshirt sporting a GOP campaign button.

So if millions of folks headed down to their local Wally World and picked up their cheapest pressure cooker for less than $30, as well as a few ball bearings, the lib heads would explode.

P_resident Pressure Cooker would wet his pants.

I wonder if we could force Janet Napolitano into a nation wide buying frenzy trying to get control of all the pressure cookers.

Our country is lead by idiots, corrupt idiots.

“..How would that jerk Chris Matthews feel if every time a mass killing took place, the MSM mussed it must be a ‘Catholic organization’ behind it... ..”

He’s Catholic in name only. He’s a liberal apparatchnik first, a Democrat second, and everything else a far distant third.

I wonder what "President" Hussein learned, when he was in Pakistan as a young man

How about which co-religionist friends he came to know and whether he has in the last four and a half years seen to their currency needs--indirectly, of course.

A pressure cooker bomb is just an odd-shaped pipe bomb. Any pipe bomb works by containing the blast from a low explosive (e.g. gunpowder) long enough to build up to the equivalent lethality of a high explosive (e.g. TNT).

>I don’t get how you can profile based on the use of ball bearings.<

.
I agree, ball bearings come from rotating equipment and that is a rarity in Afghanistan. You just don’t use ball bearings unless they’re plentifull. Now, buckshot would be a different matter.

In WWII we sent B-17s just to demolish Hitler’s ballbearing manufacturing plants, that’s how important they are.

Even in the US, ballbearings are not easy to come by unless you visit a dump and go looking for them.

Once again the UK and Canadian press has better reporting than the US “media.”

A pressure cooker has a large volume, (6 liters is 1.5 gallons), is cheap and readily available, and seals tightly.

From the amount and color of the smoke, and the orange flash, I'd wager strongly that the explosive was old-fashioned black powder, the nitrate, sulfur, charcoal mixture you can buy in up to 50 lb kegs from any good reloading store.

You don't need a blasting cap to detonate the stuff, a spark will do, and it has a faster burn rate than normal smokeless pistol and rifle powders. It deteriorates fairly quickly, (Short self life), and it's highly hygroscopic.

I'm guessing a simple electrical timer wired to nichrome wire as an initiator.

Shrapnel bombs had their start long before Afghanistan.

The Chicago ‘just a guy in the neighborhood’ liked them.
