UPDATE: Heller 'No' on Gun Control; Biden claims 58 Votes
Dean Heller ^ | Dean Heller

Posted on 04/16/2013 3:20:53 PM PDT by JohnPDuncan

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Dean Heller (R-NV) issued the following statement in opposition to the Manchin-Toomey amendment to S. 649.

“When it comes to national policy choices on issues such as Constitutional liberties, gun violence and public safety, the stakes could not be higher. The enormity of this issue has weighed heavily on me. While I was home this past weekend, my family and I ate at the Carson IHOP where four people lost their lives and several were injured. The survivors of that senseless shooting in the morning hours of September 6, 2011, deserve this debate.

“I believe very strongly that our current background check system needs strengthening and improving, particularly in areas that could keep guns out of the hands of felons and the mentally ill. At the same time, I cannot support legislation that infringes upon the Constitutional right to keep and bear arms. Despite the good faith efforts of Senators Manchin and Toomey, the onerous paperwork and expansion of federal power mandated in this legislation are too great of a concern. I believe that this legislation could lead to the creation of a national gun registry and puts additional burdens on law-abiding citizens. For these reasons, I cannot vote for this legislation,” said Senator Dean Heller.

@Chris_Moody: VP Biden said on his way out that the Senate is just two votes short on the gun bill.

4 GOP FOR, 3 DEMS AGAINST = 56.

This means to get to 58 Ayotte and either Corker or Alexander (TN) are voting for gun control!

Well good for Senator Heller. As for the remaining two votes, who will they buy, and what price the betrayal?

Except for the line, “the survivors of that senseless shooting in the morning hours of September 6, 2011, deserve this debate,” which I assume was mere political posturing, I’m okay with this. However, no one ‘deserves’ a debate on whether I should be permitted to keep my God-given constitutional rights. That was settled, by God and by the Founding Fathers, and no valid law can take that right from me, nor would any legitimate government pretend to pass a law that violates the clear meaning and intent of the Second Amendment.

Funny how things work out. If I remember correctly, conservative Senator Santorum was drummed out of office for not endorsing Toomey. And Senator Toomey now turns out to be traitor.

It’s 2 of Alexander/Corker/Isakson that will bring them to 60.

or one of Begich/Pryor/Baucus on their own side.

or a combination of one or the other.

But even if they scrape 60 or 61 surely it goes no where in the House anyway.

Interesting times.

Yup. The second amendment is not subject to debate, negotiation or compromise. No matter how well meaning they think they may be, the folks who advocate against the constitution are traitors.

They’re wheeling him out. He’s barely alive but he’ll be there to vote for gun control. He wouldn’t miss it for the world.

If they go on the record and vote against gun rights, they are clearly on the record, and all this for a bill which will be DOA in the House.

They need to think twice about that.

it might not be DOA in the House.

Boehner is not trustworthy and they will wheel out Giffords.

Give her a vote!

“Traitors” is a harsh word - and entirely appropriate for those who subvert the Constitution in violation of the Oath of Office. I hope that Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Schumer, Bloomberg, and the rest have the sense to evaluate how many new guns and how much ammo have been purchased in the past four years and back off. We have almost made it to 150 years without a civil war, and it would be a shame to restart that clock at zero.

Don't worry. There's still Chief Justice Roberts. What are the odds that he would review a clearly unconstitutional law - that exceeds the scope of enumerated powers and violates the Bill of Rights - and permit it to stand?

Despite the good faith efforts of Senators Manchin and Toomey...

You've got to be awfully naive to believe for a moment either of those vermin acted in "good faith."

It could be Alexander, he hasn’t really got anything to fear from the voters, not really anyone to primary him with. Corker could be really screwed after losing his seat. I don’t really trust either and really dislike Alexander

The Second Amendment is Sacred. It was written not to address a point in time but to address the nature of man. (ie there will always be tyrants until the end of time).

Any so-called “Conservative” who does not understand this needs to be voted out of office tuit suite.

It's probably an F, B, and I task: "Go dig up or create some dirt, bring it back, and we'll blackmail as many votes as we need." The F, the B, and the I used to be a law enforcement agency; now, it's just the dirty tricks office of the Democratic [sic] party.

They’re both a problem and neither have said anything.

Reports from TN is that Alexander is not taking calls.

Good point for them to consider, especially the two from Tennessee

I don’t trust Isakson as far as I an throw him but he’s taking so much heat for his cloture vote I can’t imagine he will actually vote for the bill.

He can prolly kiss his senate seat goodbye anyway in 2016 but a yes vote on Manchin-toomey would seal the deal. Ya hear me Johnny you POS RINO?

There’s a certain date later in the year if he dies after that date then he can appoint someone for a whole year... if he dies before then or quits (more likely) then there is a special election pretty quickly.

“...and all this for a bill which will be DOA in the House.”

DO NOT BELIEVE THAT FOR A SECOND!

Bonehead will be in favor of it and want to ram it through as fast as he can to “take it off the table as an issue”.

If it passes in the Senate you can just about be assured it will pass in the House.

Interesting, how he can continue to talk out of both sides of his mouth...

I noticed that he left out that if the people gunned down could have utilized their Constitutional Right to carry, they might not be dead today.

Unfort., he’s still too tone deaf to hear the irony of ‘background checks’ and ‘shall not be infringed’

“my family and I ate at the Carson IHOP where four people lost their lives and several were injured. The survivors of that senseless shooting in the morning hours of September 6, 2011, deserve this debate.

“I believe very strongly that our current background check system needs strengthening and improving, particularly in areas that could keep guns out of the hands of felons and the mentally ill.
