Boston attack underscores growing threat of IEDs in America (Has Iraq come to America?)
Fox News ^ | 04/16/2013 | By Barnini Chakraborty

The deadly bomb attack on the Boston Marathon highlights what may be a growing threat to American cities -- the use of IEDs to target large gatherings, inflicting mass damage with a device that is difficult to detect. Security experts say the use of IEDs is becoming a preferred tool of terror in both domestic and global attacks -- or attempted attacks -- against the United States.

"The reason to use an IED or multiple IEDs is that you're trying to create an oversized impact, and as much panic and disruption as possible," Bill Braniff, the executive director of the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism, told FoxNews.com Tuesday.

The FBI and Department of Homeland Security on Tuesday sent an intelligence bulletin to law enforcement across the country noting that the Boston attack follows a pattern.

"The activities in Boston highlight the use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) to target large gatherings, including at special events, in order to inflict mass casualties," said the bulletin, obtained by Fox News. IEDs are usually makeshift bombs that are extremely destructive when detonated. They are designed to propel shrapnel and are sometimes used in combination with toxic chemicals, radiological material or biological toxins, and are often packed with metal fragments. This pattern of terror has been seen on a global level for years but is becoming more common in the U.S.

In recent years, several of these attacks have been plotted but not successfully carried out.

I’m actually surprised it hasn’t happened sooner and more frequently. Sad but true. I hope it doesn’t start to happen more often but I do believe that is where we are headed.

Congress did nothing substantive when they attacked
the first time, or the second time, or the third time.
This time Congress is responsible for having done
nothing (except wink as more weapons were
given to al Qaeda during Fast&Furious and
the BenGhazi MANPAD Transfer).

Everyone acts like this is something new. (Mostly leftist) Radicals have been setting off bombs in public places since Guy Fawkes.

You’re correct of course.

This stuff can be put together, planted and detonated by anyone at anytime.

This venue was probably one of the more secure ones, but obviously chosen for high visibility.

You could easily take out as many or more people at a high school football game or 4th of July parade at any American town.

I think the only thing that has kept them at bay has been the fear that Americans would turn on Muslims. Given that we are such bigots, armed etc. Now since we are showing such weakness, they are emboldened. A friend today said he worries about a Nascar event. I laughed and told him I wouldn't want to be an Arab looking person with thousands of rednecks around him with a bomb going off. There wouldn't be enough left to put handcuffs on.

I find that a really stupid comment.

America has tolerated Islam’s establishment in America.

Islam is antithetical to America.
Islam is irreconcilable with America.
Islam claims to be at war with America.

Therefore, “Honor The Threat”.

Nuke Islam off the face of the earth before they kill us first as they claim they are about to do.

It appears to me that this window was blown out, not in.

Look more closely. Had it been from the inside the inside pane of safety glass to the left of the one which is completely gone is intact. Only the outer pane of the one on the left is shattered. The windows share the same room and the pressure from within would have applied nearly equally, if not equally to both windows. This appears to me to be the result of a vacuum created by the explosions force direction drawing the shattered glass outward.

The day we backed partition and founding of Israel, we pissed off the Muslim world, the day we backed Muslim monarchies to protect our oil interest and dominate world finance with a petrol dollar, we pissed off Pan Arabs; the day we protected Saudi Arabia we got involved with the complex Sunni vs Shiite Muslim conflict, the day we set foot on Saudi Arabia and Gulf nations we run into anti Modernity Wahhabi reaction. All this meant we end up making foreign enemies, and these foreign enemies learn they cannot fight us via conventional military might but with hit and run asymmetric warfare. Like it or not we deviated from our founding fathers’ principles of nonentanglement and embraced Wilsonian concept that the US should be the leader of the Free World just like European nations. Just like the Biblical Jews wanting a King and a conventional kingdom like the ones around them vs ruled by a council of judges with no fancy palace etc etc. Sooner or later the Jews learn having a King and a conventional kingdom has its vices and pitfalls. Like the Biblical Jews, the US is learning that entanglement has its price. We choose to get involve into the Middle East and now we are reaping the blow backs. Some in the FR may find this opinion insulting and cling onto the childish notion that Muslims just hate people who are different. My question is suicide bombers do not attack Chinese cities, Brazilian cities, etc etc etc. Well it is too late to undo Middle East entanglement and as a nation we will have to spend treasure, blood and time to endure and hopefully win. And when this all ends with some peace, our new leaders should learn that America is about taking care of Americans first and our business begins at home and ends where the Atlantic and Pacific shoreline begins. Once we accept and master such concept, then Pax Americana will begin.

Fox is identifying a package on the ground that may be the second bomb. If the packages were sitting on the ground it explains the injuries almost exclusively to the lower limbs.

That sir is the problem. ‘They’ have been telling us things far too long and thus we have learned to believe what they say rather than perform our own analysis. A nation of sheep is the result. But then you know that.

What’s worse is that many Americans love — or at least sympathize with — mad bombers when they come from the left.

For example:
— The Haymarket bombing of 1886 is celebrated as an advance in the American labor movement.
— The anarchist bombings in the early 20th Century are viewed as direct action for social justice, and the criminal prosecution of their perpetrators is viewed as vindictive and unjust.
— The Unabomber’s (Ted Kaczynski) Industrial Society and Its Future is pretty much an environmentalist manifesto.
— The exploits of the SDS and Weather Underground are romantically celebrated as expressions of 60s idealism, while some of their leaders (including Obama supporters Doehrn and Ayers) occupy prestigious positions rather than prison cells.

I agree that I’m surprised as well. This is why President Bush took the war to them instead of allowing them to bring it to us. Now we have Obama. He’s nothing but a friend to muslims and especially those who aim to destroy us. He’s opened up the borders and allowed an unbelievable amount of muslims to reside in the United States. Look at the videos of the way muslims act toward Christians in Michigan, which is filled with them! Time to take back our Country!
