Senate rejects background checks on gun purchases in 54-46 vote
Hill [Washington ^ | Alexander Bolton

Posted on 04/17/2013 1:52:45 PM PDT by Nachum

The Senate delivered a devastating blow to President Obama’s agenda to regulate guns Wednesday by defeating a bipartisan proposal to expand background checks. It failed by a vote of 54 to 46, with 5 Democrats voting against it. Only 4 Republicans supported it. Democratic Sens. Mark Pryor (Ark.), Max Baucus (Mont.), Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.), Mark Begich (Alaska) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.) voted against it. Reid supported the measure but voted against it to preserve his ability to bring the measure up again. GOP Sens. John McCain (Ariz.), Susan Collins (Maine), Pat Toomey (Pa.) and Mark Kirk

For once, Boehner actually implemented a strategy that worked. He let the Senate duke it out, water it down and still fail to get the votes. Hopefully, we see this hold up and avoid any legislation at all out of the Senate.

After a non-stop pummeling from politicians everywhere and the media every. single. day., the people still prvailed. After all the sympathy plays with the children, the parents of dead children, and of course Gabby Gifford, senators were still not swayed.

This is an utter failure for the left. The bill they pulled out of their “waiting for an opportunity” drawer when they heard that shots were fired in a school, is going down to defeat!

Did it wake people up to the fact that government can’t and won’t protect us?

Obama and all the other usual Dem suspects are nothing but Tragedy Pimps. They trot out tragic victims to get emotional responses instead letting people vote their logical choices. Mark Kelly fits this category, too. Everyone is heartbroken for the victims of senseless violence but using their situation to manipulate the masses crosses the line. I have come to the conclusion that most Dems have no conscience. Their motto ‘by any means necessary’ has taken on new meaning when they use those weakened by tragedy to further their own Political agenda.

In 1941, U.S. Attorney General Robert Jackson called on Congress to enact national registration of all firearms. Given events in Europe, Congress recoiled, and legislation was introduced to protect the Second Amendment. Rep. Edwin Arthur Hall explained: "Before the advent of Hitler or Stalin, who took power from the German and Russian people, measures were thrust upon the free legislatures of those countries to deprive the people of the possession and use of firearms, so that they could not resist the encroachments of such diabolical and vitriolic state police organizations as the Gestapo, the Ogpu, and the Cheka."

Rep. John W. Patman added: "The people have a right to keep arms; therefore, if we should have some Executive who attempted to set himself up as dictator or king, the people can organize themselves together and, with the arms and ammunition they have, they can properly protect themselves. . . ."

RE: Harry Reid voted against it.

This guy is such a blowhard.

Just a while ago, before the voting started, he said this:

“Voting To Save Lives Is ‘More Important Than Preventing Imagined Tyranny’”

SEE HERE:

http://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3008856/posts

Apparently he is against background checks but not against the ban on assault weapons...

Actually 55, as Dingy Harry voted against it only to retain the right to bring it back up later.

He voted against it in an attempt to save his NRA rating.

I’ve written SEVERAL strongly-worded letters to the NRA in recent weeks explaining that if this guy maintains an A-rating by their standards, then they are not an organization I wish to support. Reid is a wolf in sheep’s clothing, it’s VERY obvious to see that.

The NRA gets up to $1,000 from me every year. That’ll be cut back to $0.00 if they let these traitors ride in the ratings.

how does that work, exactly ? any help in an explanation appreciated.

Under Senate rules, someone who was on the winning side of a vote can later move to have that vote reconsidered. Someone on the losing side cannot ask for reconsideration. Hence Reid's tactical vote against, so he can bring the bill up again if he thinks enough votes have shifted to pass it.

President Obama is just on the wrong side of history. Only 4% of the public think gun control is important and historical data shows with all the bureaucracy and gun control nonsense that they are not doing much better than was being done in the 1920s. This gun control nonsense is like so many leftist bailiwicks where they offer false solutions that don’t address problems and instead just make an industry out of limiting liberties of those who aren’t criminals.

Now watch how Mr Zero will use that point 08, the arbitrary ammount declaring a driver “alcohol impared” which is not a law but a USDOT regulation backed up by federal road funding.Which later worked its way into your state laws.

Obama will use that principle for an edict on (BTW Reuters is right their style book calls it a “military style” weapon (rifle) not an) assault rifles.

Thanks for the ping, Joe.

I suppose the best thing to come out of this fuster cluck is ole Plug's suggestion that we get a shotgun. Here's my recommendation - Mossberg 590-A1:

She has perfect cosmetic features, as you can tell by her high cheekbones and slim waist and gorgeous hips, and Cabelas carries them at a very reasonable price.

Now, one nice bonus of this anti-constitutinal common-sense horse pucky hitting the storm drain is that mags and ammo should become plentiful once again, now that Joe American isn't grabbing everything in sight due to impending tyranny (not that we can let down our guard now). Maybe CCI Stingers will show up at WalMart in the not so distant future for the paper puncher crowd, 9mm's for the armed soccer moms, and 10mm's and .45's for the sheepdawgs amongst us. Time to a bit of pre-ordering with MagPul as well, for, if nothing else, telling Calirado to stuff it.

“They trot out tragic victims to get emotional responses instead letting people vote their logical choices.”

It’s time to confront these so-called victims. They trusted a corrupt and uncaring government to protect their children. They failed as parents to protect their children.

They thought, incorrectly, that their children were safe in the care of leftists who couldn’t care less about their children. The fault of their dead children lies solely with them as parents and their inability to accept their responsibility to safeguard their children.

And no way in hell am I giving my weapons to protect my children. You had the responsibility to protect your children, and you failed. I won’t fail my children.
