A large explosion rocked the town of West, Texas, 19 miles north of Waco, on Wednesday evening.
A source tells News 8 that a large swath of the small town with a population of 2,800 has been leveled.
According to initial reports, the blast was at the West Fertilizer plant at 1471 Jerry Mashek Drive, about a half-mile east of Interstate 35.

Fertilizer plants are essentially low-grade munitions factories. Bit like a firecracker store ticking off.
Hmmm, fertilizer, nothing explosive about that. Seriously though, prayers to the injured and their families.
Numerous injuries were reported and multiple ambulances were requested.
Several buildings were reported destroyed and a nearby nursing home was damaged.
There were reports that people were trapped in the nursing home and in an apartment building.
Scanner traffic indicated that some residents of both the nursing home and apartment building were severely injured.
A triage area was established at the intersection of Haven and North Reagan Streets.
A number of buildings were reported to be burning, some in residential areas.
West Middle School was one of the buildings reported to be on fire.
Based on the pics, the explosion cloud quite literally looks like a 1-5 kiloton tacnuke.
on the anniversary of Waco . Waco: when Bill Clinton burned alive almost 100 Americans in waco. He ordered tanks to be used against Americans who had children with them
Branch Davidian compound was 4/19. Today is 4/17.
5 kiloton tacnuke?! Oh brother.
Prayers. Hope the folks at the nursing home are ok. Many pics at the link.
Prayers for those affected.

West is known for the best kolaches!
Son in Arlington “felt” the explosion. Amazing. Nursing home and apt. complex on fire...
Whew - the Czech Stop appears to be okay.
Asking for 9 air medivacs
I can imagine! We used to use a fertilizer / fuel mix as the explosive at an open pit mine where I worked. The mid day blast was spectacular.
Prayers for the people affected.
Prayers up for all those responders and involved.
UPDATE: Numerous Injuries Reported In West Fertilizer Plant Explosion
I hope the Czech Stop wasn’t affected, loves me some Kolaches from there.
My biggest fear about working at the refinery; the cat cracker exploding. The blast radius would encompass half of Wood River..
The Czech Stop is fine. See #13.
Of course I am more concerned about the injured, though, but yes, I am glad the Czech Stop is fine. Like to make it back down to WestFest one of these years.
Would that be a Sonic Boom?
Woah, hold it!
The youtube video on the Dallas news site is NOT of the plant fire today in West, Texas. It’s a repost of the famous rocket fuel plant explosion that happened years ago. Don’t believe me? Here’s the link to the original video... look... same camera... same buildings!
How the heck can a news station IN TEXAS do something this stupid?
it must be asked, where was janet reno?
Yep..I’ve seen that footage on a bunch of documentaries - I think that was in Nevada.
Note that the pics in this thread are all of Waco, I think.
Words fail me. It looks like a nuke went off.
Anniversary of waco? This is just a coincidence folks :-). North Korea hires Al Qaeda to do Boston (maybe gives them a suitcase nuke) and wants us to think homegrown terrorists did it so they stage ricin attacks from MS and waco explosion on da anniversary. Not a bad strategy. Fasten your seatbelts.
Shame on you.
(I thought the same thing. Apricot and cream cheese kolaches, warmed: heaven.)
I still remember Waco.
Nice catch. Thank you.
The plant is about three miles north of the town popular for kolache bakeries on Interstate 35W.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Public Safety in Waco, told television station KWTX that DPS troopers have been transporting the injured to hospitals in their patrol cars. She says six helicopters were also en route.
KWTX reported that the explosion at West Fertilizer was reported at 7:50 p.m. in a frantic call from the scene.
It was unclear an hour later if anyone was killed, but several injured people came to the Czech Stop bakery, said Barbara Schissler, president of the store.
"There have been many injuries," she said by phone. "It's just crazy here. Like a war zone."
Prayers up for the injured and for the emergency responders, as usual.
Looks like they just pulled the video...
Think they got some hate mail? :)
I think it’s a likely guess that many more people were killed in this than in Boston. Media won’t really jump on it until they get an exciting body count. That may take a while because I suspect many of those killed are now a red mist.
Interesting to see if the media or country cares. I doubt there will be any national conversation about hazardous industrial sites in residential areas (though I suspect if you total all the people killed in this country in industrial explosions it exceeds those killed in terrorist explosions by a ratio of 100:1 or 1000:1).
McLennan County Police, Fire and EMS live feed here:
Think they got SOMETHING! I can't imagine why they would pull stock footage for an incident this serious.
Close to 11000 people listening to the McLennan County radio feed.
And 547 in the chat. Been a very busy two days.
The other tank on fire?
The other hydrous oxide tank on fire....
Willie Nelson’s hometown, I think.
What is it with April?
