There are always claims they’re involved in price-setting via production or some such

OPEC exists to fix petroleum prices. No question.

That said, we don't purchase Saudi oil, so making them happy to keep that supply flowing doesn't make sense.

OPEC countries need to sell their oil just as badly as other countries need to purchase it, so the prospect of them closing the spigot isn't that great.
