US Initial Jobless Claims Rise By 4,000 To 352,000 As Hiring Remains Modest

The number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits rose last week, signaling little improvement in a soft U.S. labor market, though broadly in line with analyst expectations.

In the week ended April 13, applications for unemployment insurance payments increased by 4,000 to 352,000, the Labor Department said Thursday. That's the highest level in two months. Economists surveyed by Reuters expected claims to rise to 350,000 from the prior week's upwardly revised figure of 348,000.

The four-week moving average, which normally provides a better indication of the underlying trend in labor markets than the weekly number of jobless claims, rose by 2,750 to 361,250.

The number of people filing for benefits after an initial week of aid decreased by 35,000, to 3.07 million in the week ended April 6. The continuing claims figure doesn't include the number of Americans receiving extended benefits under federal programs.

Job gains are of great importance, because they lead to income growth, and that supports consumer spending, which accounts for more than 70 percent of the U.S. economy. U.S. employers added a paltry 88,000 jobs in March, the smallest gain in nine months and less than half of the gain expected.

There are so many able bodied— used to be workers — on Socialo Security disability now that we cannot keep up with them.

This IS the “hope and change”.

Just look at all the people who don’t have to work anymore!

Let me see if I understand liberal reporting:
New Claims go up
Highest in two months
Moving average, a better measure, goes up

This signals "little improvement"? I'd sure hate to see what "signals" getting worse!

Who are these “economists” who keep missing the numbers? They never get it right. Do they think if they say it, it will come true?

Last night we were at a great dinner with a sell out crowd at a 3 year old 5 star restaurant.

Another fine restaurant in the same area was slammed.

However, when we walked from the parking garage to the restaurant, the other businesses in the same area were without customers or closed at 6 pm.

On the way back to the garage, I commented about the two differences.

A lady in our party has a new job with an Aussie company in what used to be a busy office/warehouse complex by our airport. She said that most of the offices and warehouses in that complex were closed and had been for at least a year and some since the melt down. Every restaurant/café/store in that area/comples was closed. The only food service was a Taco truck that came each noon hour. One of her Aussie bosses said this scene was replicated up and down our west coast.

Hundreds of people worked in that area before our financial meltdown. Now, the county jail, and the Aussie corporation are the only open places.
