National GOP abandons Mark Sanford
Washington Post ^ | April 17, 2013 | Aaron Blake and Karen Tumulty

Posted on 04/18/2013 9:51:28 AM PDT by JerseyanExile

Following revelations that his ex-wife accused him of trespassing on her property earlier this year, former South Carolina governor Mark Sanford (R) has lost the support of his national party.

The news comes as controversy continues to swirl around Sanford and his personal life — a process that began with his well-publicized 2009 affair but was inflamed, the Washington Post has learned, when one of the Sanfords’ sons met Mark Sanford’s former mistress for the first time the night he won the GOP nomination.

The National Republican Congressional Committee on Wednesday took the unusual step of telegraphing that it will not spend money on his special election campaign. “Mark Sanford has proven he knows what it takes to win elections. At this time, the NRCC will not be engaged in this special election,” the NRCC said in a statement, which was first reported by Politico.

The committee has spent very little on the race so far, but Sanford’s problems have put a conservative district in jeopardy for the Republicans. And the report Tuesday of the trespassing complaint seems to assure that he wouldn’t sail to victory.

A Republican familiar with the NRCC’s decision criticized Sanford’s lackluster response to the report about his ex-wife’s trespassing complaint and said it would be “foolish” for anybody to spend money on him.

“It’s not out of the realm of possibility for him to win – stranger things have happened in special elections,” the Republican said. “But the fact that he wasted precious time and money rehabilitating his image only to squander that makes it very foolish for outside groups to commit resources.”

Good point. There are multiple news reports that they are engaged, but that is different from him intending to keep his word and marry her.

I think it was the idea of a mischievous Democrat that encouraged him to get back In The race. It wouldn’t have taken much encouragement for an obsessive narcissist like MS to play on his name recognition, maybe get a few dems to vote in our primary. Voila, Colbert gets a chance she wouldn’t have gotten with a untarnished conservative. And the SCGOP better watch out for outraged conservative women who don’t think that whoring around is cute

The national GOP is still a bunch of amateurs. If they were on the ball, they would have found out about these issues and disclosed them during the primary. It really does amaze me how bad the national GOP is when it comes to spotting issues and getting on top of them for elections.

Wait, I thought folks didn't want the national GOP (aka: the GOPe) from getting involved in the primaries. Sanford was not the establishment candidate this go around. Mark "Appalachian Trail" Sanford is a selfish tool that fooled conservatives values voters in a southern, overwhelmingly Republican district to give him a second chance. LOTS of conservatives fell for this guy again - including people like Erick Erickson over at Red State who endorsed him.

For the national party it's damned if they do, damned if they don't. If they get involved, even to stop a ridiculous candidate like Christine O Donnell, the grass roots gets pissed. If they don't get involved and a bone head like Mark Sanford wins the nomination, people complain the national party didn't do anything and wonder why the RNC isn't as effective as the Democrats in terms of avoiding throwing away seats.

Are you sure that’s the mistress? That pic looks like SC Gov. Nikki Haley, but I could be wrong...

In my opinion, the race is a toss up at this point. If the Rats decide to go heavy on negative ads, Colbert's sister wins. If so, this district could remain Blue for quite a while as Charleston and Myrtle Beach are becoming demographically dysfunctional. More worrisome though is Tim Johnson's election bid for the Senate in 2014. Any serious challenge to Graham could suck money and enthusiasm from Johnson.

You have the right attitude about this. Sanford my be awful and it’s really disappointing that primary voters in the 1st congressional district of South Carolina nominated him, but Mr. Appalachian Trail is still better than Stephen Colbert’s uber liberal sister. Sanford is our idiot now, and anyone in this district should vote for him come the general election. If we can hold this seat maybe South Carolinian’s can primary him next time and nominate someone who isn’t a lying jackass.

The effrontery of politicians like Sanford. Proven immoralists, vice addicts if you please, thinking so highly of themselves that no disgrace will move them to shut up. They must run and save us-nonsense!

You're right - thank you for the correction!

I picked that pic because the woman looked so much prettier and classier than the other pictures of the mistress, and it was labeled as "mark+sanford+mistress+maria+argentina.jpg". Still, I should have noticed that the woman looked too familiar - I've worked with Nikki although not enough to recognize my mistake without warning.

The real mistress (sorry Gov. Haley!).

Truly sad. Because he is a rock solid small government conservative that we NEED in Washington. I hope people will realize the alternative to Mark is unacceptable. Vote him out next cycle if you must but do not put Colbert in there.

Evidence that Sanford is missing cards in his deck of 52.

Also evidence that Sanford has a self-destruction impulse.

It’s because of name ID. People in SC probably had never heard of anyone else in the race but Sanford. Name ID means everything in SC.
