South of the Columbia River, Oregon lawmakers gathered in Salem passed four gun control measures out of the State Senate Judiciary Committee Thursday morning – one day after the U.S. Senate derailed similar legislation on Capitol Hill – and a source tells Examiner that a vote could come up pretty soon.
The four bills were passed out of committee on straight 3-2 party line votes, according to the Portland Oregonian and Salem Statesman Journal, with Democrats supporting the measures and Republicans opposed. As this column noted earlier, the push for gun control is not yet in the coffin.
Senate Bill 700 is the so-called “universal background check” package that exempts transfers between family members. It has a record-keeping requirement. A similar measure failed in Olympia earlier this year, even after record-keeping was removed. Gun owners do not think the government has any business monitoring their firearms purchases or possession.
Senate Bill 796 establishes a training requirement for concealed carry license applicants. No such requirement exists in Washington State, where some 411,000 active concealed pistol licenses are in circulation.
A third measure, SB 699, mandates that firearms carried in public buildings be concealed, apparently to prevent open carry activists from showing up for public hearings or other business. In Olympia earlier this year, open carriers Nick Smith and Jim Beal sat in the front row at a hearing of the House Judiciary Committee, and Smith even testified. Nobody batted an eyelash.
Lastly, SB 347 would let school districts prevent legally-licensed citizens from carrying concealed handguns on school campuses.
Activists are already at work, thanks to the Northwest Firearms forum, which includes many Beaver State members.

California was “East Coasted” in the 60s, 70s, and beyond. Those “Californians you’re talking about are New Englanders...or some such.....
One of my neighbors is a flaming liberal....as bad as you can get.....He moved here from his home state in the 1990s. His real home?.........Spartanburg, South Carolina! Yet to people like you he’ll always be a “Californian.”
Most of the “fruits and nuts” here aren’t home grown, they’re “imported” from hometowns like yours.....
Think of it this way California is doing us all a favor because when the SHTF we’ll know where to find the.....(along both coasts)
