Pure speculation, but I suspect her parents raised her as part of the co-exist crowd and are only nominally Christians. She wasn’t a believing Christian or she never would have converted.
Speculation #2, as he got more ‘religious’ and considering his abusive background, he probably got more demanding (willing to bet he forced her to stop school) and abusive. He would fight a divorce, so she moved home to her parents hoping he would ‘level out’.
