Did the FBI hold back good images of the bomb suspects at their new conference?

On Monday 4/15/2013 Two bombs explode near the finish line of the Boston marathon, killing three and wounding nearly 180.

On Thursday 4/18/2013 the FBI released marginal pictures, images and video of two men suspected of involvement in the attacks, appealing to the public to help identify them.

It seems clear now, the FBI were unable to ID the suspects, so they went public on 4/18/2013.

Within hours a campus police officer is shot to death.

However, within a very short time after the news conference, possibly less than an hour or so, the FBI then released near perfect images. In fact, they were frontal, easily identifiable, near perfect closeup images of the two suspects.

If you recall, directly after the news conference the FBI and media made it clear the FBI had much better images/video of the suspects. We've all seen them now, they are near perfect frontal images of the suspects

If this is all in fact true, it begs the question: Why did they not release these high quality frontal face images/video during the news conference when they appealed to the public for help identifying the suspect?

This seems a bit odd.

Perhaps people who knew the perps called in after seeing the first grainy photos. Once the FBI had names of the guys they were able to obtain better photos.

Or people sent in the pictures when they noticed the dirtbags in them.

I'm not saying it's true, but after Fast & Furious (and Benghazi) I'm much more inclined to listen to conspiracy theories.

Yes, they did.

I was listening to the police scanner Thursday night. A police officer mentioned to someone at HQ that he had seen a very good photo in the hands of another law enforcement agency. The person at HQ radioed back and asked if he was able to get a copy. The police officer said that the other LEA had refused to give him a copy.

Exact quote from the HQ guy in response:

“That’s just outstanding. Let me make a phone call.”

I heard this firsthand on the scanner sometime between 11pm and 12am EST.

What the FBI didn’t want was a flood of calls from all over the world about sightings so, they released images with just enough resolution that anyone knowing the terrorists, especially the younger one would be able to recognize him.

If that is in fact true, it was never once revealed or reported.

Like all good government functionaries, they were answering their highest calling, protecting their turf. To admit outright that they were helpless and needed the assistance of John Q. Public damages their image.

The FBI should’ve figured out who it was just from the video they did have, without needing any public help. He was on the FBI’s radar screen since 2011 and after he returned from Russia for terroist activities.

The uncle sure doesn’t sound like he has any love for his nephews. He called them useless and pathetic.

As I commented on the thread where the FBI images were posted, there were already a number of FAR better images all over the internet. The FBI images were blurred and taken from a bad angle. It was obviously deliberate.

Because the FBI and DHS are utterly incompetent...or worse, negligent...

The answer to your question is spelled out in this article:

http://news.yahoo.com/runner-spectator-photos-marathon-suspects-014835588.html

With his Nikon, Leonard snapped about 10 to 20 photos a minute Monday, capturing group after group of finishing runners and the crowds lining the route.
Three days later, when the FBI released images of the suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing, Leonard used the time stamp shown on them to narrow his search of the hundreds of photos he had taken that day. He realized that he, too, had photos of the faces of the two men authorities were searching for.
He uploaded them to the FBI and Friday morning, he saw his cropped photos all over the morning news.
“That finally gave them a good facial picture,” the 58-year-old electrical engineer said. “It was a pretty good breakthrough.”
The two men were later identified as brothers, 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was killed in shootout with police overnight Friday, and 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, distinctive in his backward white baseball cap. The younger man was captured Friday night after a daylong siege of a Boston suburb.
“They actually stood in that corner for quite a bit of time,” Leonard of Taunton, Mass., said of the men, just before the younger brother was caught.
After combing the digital images, he was sure he had something the FBI could use. He tried to upload them to an FBI site that it had asked the public to use. Then he called the hotline number and was on hold for about 40 minutes, the response was so overwhelming. He finally got an FBI spokesman, who told him to upload them to another site. Within 20 minutes, someone from the Department of Homeland Security called him back.
“They were on the news ... clear pictures of the two subjects and those were the pictures that I sent in,” said Leonard, who started photography as a hobby when his sons played high school sports.

There will be some “splaining” to do on this matter.
