Posted on 04/20/2013 5:48:01 PM PDT by JohnPDuncan
Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) discusses gun control and background checks with Geraldo Rivera on his radio show and takes calls from listeners.
PAUL: This grief is just an unbearable burden. I think people are politicizing and trying to take advantage. Politicians are taking advantage of peoples' grief. And it makes me even sadder to see, gosh this person lost their five year old son, their six year old son, and they're being put as pawns in the middle of a political debate that's been going on for years. And really, one of the the only ways I can think of o stop these shootings is to announce tomorrow that there wont be gun-free zones in schools.

As usual Geraldo misses the point and gets schooled!
We should use the term ‘gun free target zones’.
Second Amendment Sisters. Inc calls “gun free zones” killing fields......
And lock up dangerous people.
Anyone notice that when the FBI checked the tip on the elder brother, he got a BACKGROUND CHECK?
Problem: who makes that determination?
We must be careful who we give that power too.....
The guy who ambushed firemen on Christmas should have never left prison after beating his own grandmother to death with a hammer.
That shouldn’t be a tough determination about who is and isn’t dangerous.
The way to end gun-free zones is to end those who call for gun-free zones. Find out who they are and kick their a$$es. Poof! Gun-free zones end.
I’ve always called them “Victim Disarmament Zones”.
Sucks, because i work in one...
Yes. He is almost the perfect candidate, except for that glaring imperfection.
I like the way you think...
He wants the border closed and an end to freebies for illegals.
That’s a better stance than even Reagan took.
Geraldo missed nothing. He is a solid liberal and behaves to match.
“I like the way you think...”
Thank my USMC drill instructor. The SOB was a lot tougher than me.
If that’s true why is he so receptive to the recent gang of ocho proposal?
Look, I like Rand Paul. In fact, he is my pick for Pres right now. But, I have heard some bad things about his positions on immigration — essentially he favors the path to citizenship which I emphatically oppose.
Yes. Reagan, no matter how decent a President he was on many issues (he was also very bad on spending), was not good on immigration. Really bad that he agreed to the last amnesty. However, at that time, immigration was a much smaller problem than it it is now. That is something, I am afraid, Reagan’s amnesty actually exacerbated.
Government indoctrination centers DO NOT CARE about protection of your children. Brainwashing & larger, MORE important agenda-driven kill zones are win/win. Fake concern from con-men washes away their culpability.
The Army can make that easily.....Christians, Catholics and Mormons. This is not rocket science to the Army.
Rand’s immigration stance is actually more practical and more beneficial to legal residents than what is happening right now. Illegals are getting free maternity benefits and medicaid, millions collecting food stamps, more millions taking jobs from legal immigrants and citizens, many work for cash and pay no taxes.
Absolute Worst part is illegals do not register, and no one knows where they live. Rand Paul’s proposal improves on all fronts. There are fines to be paid, taxes to be paid. After 10+ years many will qualify for citizenship, after the law breakers, tax evaders are weeded out.
The current situation is intolerable, and wishing that laws be followed will not make it happen. We got Obama/Holder in charge.
I was a “Hollywood” Mairine. Did my NCO school on Paris Island though... The best of both Coasts I guess...
So far, all I’ve heard fromRand is that his “path” is following the current law with a closed border and no bennies. That “current path” is going back to your home Country and applying like everyone else.
If you’ve got a better idea... Let’s hear it...
You need to trust him on immigration he’s just trying to make something terrible better which I think he’ll fail to do.
It’s coming whether we like it or not in some shape or form. Rand is trying to shape it in a better fashion.
The current bill is a joke of course.
Trying to get this corrupt administration to “enforce current law” is not going to happen.
They’re in power for the next 4 years no matter how much we hate them and they will continue their lax policy.
Rand is trying to make a bad bill better. He will fail and end up against it im pretty sure. Wait and see.
The gangs bill is a joke. He’s trying to change it through his own amendments to make it better. His amendments will likely fail.
If they do fail the bill in the current form will die in the House but it’s not without risk....
The lying Marxist will take full advantage and scream day and night that the GOP is racist and anti-immigrant. That’s what he plans to run on in 2014. He’s a nasty, lying POS.
I will reluctantly support permanent residency for illegals currently in the US who are law abiding other than their immigration status, but those individuals should never have a path to full citizenship. That is their penalty for jumping the line and entering this country illegally while others wait for years in their country trying to do it the right way.
Problem: Obama then screams day and night about 2nd class citizens.
We’re dealing with a nasty, lying POS.
“I was a Hollywood Mairine. Did my NCO school on Paris Island though... The best of both Coasts I guess...”
Okay, the Marine Corps thought well of you.
Semper fi, Marine. It’s a pleasure to meet you.
Whos going to make them go home? Certainly not ICE.
Cut off the welfare spigot and the only ones wanting to stay are the ones we want.
Let the rest go back the same way they snuck in...
I agree. Except that many will still be kept by people entitled to welfare. Tio Ernesto can share the things bought with food stamps.
End government welfare. It isn’t a Federal job.
And yes, it really is that easy.
I also note, you never said what your plan would be...
In addition to upholding the 2d amendment, putting convicted murderers to death in the matter of months woud put a huge dent in our murder rate.
To: JPD, DC, and etropy
Subj: Republicans are scared of their own shadows
Msg: Fellas, I appreciate what you are trying to do. Really, I do. I understand that Rand Paul’s is trying to make this excrement sandwich more palatable. However, it’s still an excrement sandwich! These illegals deserve nothing. You could make a humanitarian case for the so-called “Dream-act children” who grew up here and, for all intents and purposes, are Americans. However, their parents should never get a path to citizenship outside of the regular process. I could see issuing work visas or creating a special category of some other color cards, so those who snuck in here can work legally and not become a burden on our social and prison systems. I wouldn’t do this for their benefit, but for ours. However, all of this smacks of weakness and appeasement. We are lawful American citizens. They are trespassers. Why should we tolerate these criminals amongst us? Mexico does not tolerate such things within their own country? Why are we so stupid to allow it? If Hispanics in this country think no deal on immigration is due to anti-hispanic bias, that is their problem. Some good communications skills on the part of republican party would be helpful in allaying these fears, but I would not count on that from the “stupid party” (i.e. GOP).
My Grandfather crossed the Atlantic on a crammed passenger ship when he was 5 years old in the care of his slightly older brother. When he and his older brother got here, they was processed, checked for infections, and given into the custody of other relatives who legally came here before them. After arriving here, my Grandfather and my Great Uncles learned perfect English and became fully integrated into American society — so much so that their off-spring are now considered products of privilege by some. This bill, this amnesty, insults the memory of my Grandfather and all the law-abiding people who have immigrated to the US before and after his arrival. These people followed the law and earnestly desired to become Americans. Physically cut-off from their mother countries, most of these immigrants gathered together in ghettos and had menial jobs. But, no matter how poor they were, they were proud to be Americans and they did not ask for, nor did they receive, any public assistance.
We have a problem with illegal immigrants. Something should be done about it. However, ramming an 800 page piece of legislation down the throats of loyal, tax-paying, patriotic Americans is a complete betrayal.
If Congress really wants to do something about immigration, they should do the right thing. Form a commission to look into the matter for several months. Based on the commission’s recommendations, Congress critters can propose comprehensible legislation...say 50 pages of text in clear language, and then have several weeks of debates and amendments, posting the full text of all proposed legislation online so the public can see what’s in the bill if they are so inclined. Right now, they are trying to jam this poop pie down our gullets without having any debate.
I supported Rand Paul’s filibuster on drones. Although that was certainly a very important ethical question, an immigration agreement that will literally transform this country overnight should demand a filibuster even more. I do not see Rand Paul nor any other republican currently talking about that. Perhaps, they will if they can’t modify the current bill to their liking. Right now, I just see a lot of sound without fury, signifying nothing.
You may be from Maryland, but your graphic with Sam Elliot captured the mindset of TEXAS to a TEA!
It may be simple, but hardly easy. This has been going on since 1933.
I certainly agree about one thing: that any legislation should be limited to a few pages stating in plain English what they propose to do.
Thanks for your reply!
The bastards have us in a tough spot. If we block the crap sandwich we get called racist or insufficiently with the hispanics.
We might be able to stop it in the House. It’s not clear whether we can or not so keep up the pressure on members of congress.
However i’m still afraid Obama will be talking about this non-stop for years and years and using it at HIS issue.
I think the GOP are trying to find a way to neutralize this sophisticated attack the best they can without selling out.
I dont think Rubio or Flake is helpful by agreeing to this bill which is horrible and must be modified because i dont see the House taking it up.
Rand is trying to make sure the message is not lost to the hispanics. if he votes against it he wants them to know he’s still with them and listening to them because he’s hoping to fight a national election in 4 years.
This doesn’t mean he supports giving in to everything they want but he does support some process for them.
If this is disappointing to you then I dont know what to say... This is coming whether we like it or not and Obama is going to run on this day and night and keep demanding it.
I dont think it can be blocked.
The House are saying they want to pass standalone bills rather than one big monstrous package.
I think this is a good strategy but the danger is Obama doesn’t sign them and demands “COMPREHENSIVE REFORM” and screams “GOP IS BLOCKING IT!”
I’m sick of him but this is what Washington is reduced to.
The repubs need to grow a pair — seriously. Either you stand for something or you die for nothing to quote John Rambo in Rambo IV.
I am all for adept politics, but sometimes you have to go down swinging. Although, in this case, I don’t think it’s inevitable that this bill or something like has to pass. I do think it will happen if repubs don’t start fighting back and taking it to the democrats. The repubs need to listen the likes of Ben Shapiro and the folks at Breitbart, “Attack, attack, attack.” President Obama does not have anybody or anyone group’s best interests at heart. He is a cold, conniving politician. We should take the fight to him. I am sick and tired of people not challenging him on his frequent political gaffes and fundamental philosophical inconsistencies or inaccuracies. Really, the repubs are worse than Neville Chamberlain claiming they will have an agreement for peace. It’s war. The democrats have declared war on the repubs and traditional America. If you plan to go all moderate, Romney-like, you will lose.
I live in Texas. I am surrounded by Mexican Americans. I get along with them fine. Many are repubs/conservatives. You know why a sizable group of them are not dems? Because they believe in traditional things, like guns, are willing to work hard to make money, etc. Heck, most of them resent illegals coming over border as much as I do, There are plenty of hispanics, asians, etc. who share this view of illegal immigrants. These people just want to make sure that you are not going to talk down to them or discriminate against them. This just takes straight talk on the part of the repubs. Reject the dems reality and substitute your own. Take the fight to the dems and the President.
First things first, you must put the breaks on this monstrosity of jail house love. There are many reasonable ways to slow this down and expand debate. Here are a few:
1. Terrorism and national security
2. Need to study issue for best results
3. Need to open debate and public feedback
Repubs need to stop quivering in their boots. They can win this fight both in Congress in the eyes of the public, but they won’t do so without even putting up a fight. They had better stop this violation of our republic or die in a grotesque and honorable way trying to stop it. If they don’t fight the good fight on this issue, I will be registering independent.
Recent events might slow this down. Sad but true.
However like I say people like Rubio and Flake make it difficult. McConnell cannot stop this in the Senate if these folks are backing this ridiculous bill.
So it goes to the House. Pressure your TX delegation. They’re usually reliable.
You seem like a nice fellow, John.
However, right now, we have to fight. Reject their labels and throw it back at them.
We need a Chesty Puller and a couple dozen John Basilones running around Congress kicking butt and taking names. Ted Cruz is doing a fine job representing Texas. We need others to do the same. Fight, fight, fight like there is no tomorrow because if this passes, we will wake up to a different country and not a better one either.
I would like that, that they never can vote unless they go back to their country and apply for green card like everyone else.
The question is...is it possible to pass such a bill?
In my honest opinion it will not pass until republicans control 65 seats in senate and 65% in House because there will always be some mushy republicans.
In life what we wish and what we can get are not always identical. Realists accept whatever best they can get. Dreamers die dreaming. Right now I am willing to settle what is possible. If a favorable congress is elected in less than 10 years along with the president, then the law can be changed. Any law can be changed. Even the constitution has amendments.
Republicans can grow 4 big brass ones and that don’t mean shyt when Obama is the president and senate has democrat control. Like I said, continuing with the present situation of 12-30 million illegals WITH NO BORDER CONTROL is unacceptable. If the proposed bill has closing the border as #1 priority with checks, only then I can support it because it will at least reduce the flow of illegals. They are coming every day unabated.
If by border control it is meant that there will be no wall and no extra people, then it is more of the same — no border control.
We can win this battle. The only reason we lost the election was that many people just did not like Romney. Democrat class warfare mud stuck and Romney was “moderate” for most of his campaign, especially in the final stages of the campaign even after decisively beating Obama in the first debate. Appeasing la Raza, Univision, and Marco Rubio will not save our party nor our country. It will have the exact opposite effect on the party and who knows what the long term effects of a general amnesty will be on our country. Whatever they will be, they won’t be to our liking.
Oh, by the way, that figure of 12-30 million illegals...with family members .... that will be 30-50 million more newly legalized illegals (equal to 1/5 or 1/6 our current population), un-acculturated and, for the most part, poorly educated, voting and doing whatever newly legalized former illegals do.
We must fight this with all our might.
