Debris, structural damage slow search for victims of West plant explosion

In a town like West, almost everyone knows the missing and the presumed dead, among them, Joey Pustejovsky, West’s city secretary and a member of the volunteer fire department.

“We have a mayor and we have Joey,” said resident Laura Bettge, who said she spent Thursday morning praying and crying. “He’s a friend to everybody, but he’s also our leader.

“‘Secretary’ doesn’t really describe what he does,” she said. “We don’t have a city manager, so he kind of just helps run everything.”

The only victim publicly identified Thursday was Capt. Kenny Harris of Dallas Fire-Rescue, a 52-year-old father of three grown sons who lived in West and had volunteered to help fight the fire.

“He was one of the most genuine people I’ve ever met,” said Presley Hoffman, 18, who said she knew Harris’ son.

At least two people with family members in the West Fire Department said they were told their loved ones were missing and presumed dead.

But even in the most terrible hours West has ever known, residents banded together, helping one another get through that first night and the hard day that followed.

This happened not far north of my TX home (in Texas miles). This story epitomizes why I love Texas - neighbors are heroes. Bastrop burned in 2011 and that area is / was some of the most pristine pine forests in the US. It was a massive catastrophe, but we pulled together.

We’ll do the same with this catastrophe. God Bless!

Texas has a pick yourself and go on attitude...

As a native my heart aches for West...I know the spirit of those people...

My people are from Bowie and Henrietta...

God Bless

Praying fou Texas what a horrible tragedy, and getting lost because of the Boston news.

They need to determine who screwed-up and caused the West Disaster.

Plant management and or who ever decided to use water to fight the initial fire?

I feel guilty for almost forgetting about this terrible tragedy since everything this week centered on Boston. But I know the Texas citizens will not sit on their duffs waiting for the feds to come and help them.

You are strong and tough and what this country is all about. God Bless.

The media was ecstatic when they thought it was an attack by someone on the right. Then when nothing pointed to that they just ignored the explosion, and all the innocent lives lost. Once the “Waco explosion at fertilizer plant”, reports(that mentioned the Oklahoma City bombing and Timothy McVeigh), couldn't further be used to advance their leftist political agenda, and smear patriots, it was all but forgotten by the liberal propagandist. They pushed it into the background like no lives were lost.

These people in our media are disgusting, and we shouldn't tolerate the MSM these days. They have recently crossed lines most would have never expected, including those who have been aware of their liberal bias for years. Most didn't think they would be so blatant about it the way they are now. Most didn't think the public would accept it, and we shouldn't. They should be sued for their lies and slander.

I guess the "good" news is that it could have been much worse.

It looks like the explosion was almost entirely shaped west and some to the east. To the east, there are only a few homes. To the west (toward I35), there was a large school building that wasn't occupied at the time. The school with the children would have been decimated.

The Texas Rangers BB Team had asked fans that would attend the Saturday night game to bring clothing, etc., to donate to the citizens of West TX.

After the game, our local news reported that so much had been donated that the Rangers said they had no more room to store the goods. ...Before Sunday’s afternoon game there will be a blood drive there for those injured in West and fans are asked to donate gift cards so West citizens can buy other things they need.

Unlike New Orleans, West will pull themselves up by their bootstraps. Prayers for them all.

The bad decisions were made early: to store that much deadly stuff. A hundred times as much as that used to blow up the Murrah building. To build so close to the plant. And, my guess, firefighters doing the wrong thing. But everyone has paid dearly for their mistakes. And, this being rural Texas, they will pick themselves up, pray over their dead, and rebuild.

O'Reilly turned my stomach the other day, he asked someone from West, Texas about the "looting" by citizens after the explosion. I thought WTF? There are videos of looters stealing venders Boston marathon jackets and souvenirs out of their stands that were left, the venders ran to assist blast victims leaving their inventory unattended in Boston just feet from the vender stands. That's the lowest I've seen that Prima Donna (O'Reilly) sink since I've watched faux news.

I'm waiting to see if the punch bowl floater in the White Hut will be attending or making any memorial speech in Texas. I'm not holding my breath.

O’Reilly is an idiot. I don't understand how anyone could like him at this point. He still fools some on the right apparently. They need to wake up. He's the stereotypical self described moderate who believes he's superior for having stupid views that show a lack of principle.

The media doesn't care about the loss of innocent life unless it can be exploited for tyrannical leftist propaganda, or can help their ratings. I literally believe most of the leadership on the left are psychopaths. They are self absorbed, and seem to lack normal emotions. This post is all over the place. I'm just sick of all of these people.
