Posted on 04/22/2013 8:31:16 AM PDT by Gorilla44
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said Monday that the FBI did not know that Tamerlan Tsarnaev the deceased Boston Marathon bombing suspect went on a six-month overseas trip in 2011 because his name was misspelled.
He went over to Russia, but apparently when he got on the airplane, they misspelled his name, so it never went into the system that he actually went to Russia, Graham said on Fox News, saying he spoke to an assistant director of the FBI.

Your government at work.
Maybe we could start something like a “PASSPORT” system that would capture travel information. We could even find out where the president traveled when he was a kid.
Public education!!!!! kan’t spill, cahn’t tipe, kent reed!!!!
The FBI under WITHHOLDER and THE FOREIGNER probably paid for his round trip ticket and hotel accommodations.
I thought passports had numbers on it. no passports scanned into a database? wow what a crapped up system.
The FBI search can't handle a simple name spelling difference?
What do we pay those jerks for?
If they had used google search, it would have supplied the correct name.
And neither party is interested in fixing the mess.
And his passport number was written wrong as well, right?
Sorry if I think that’s a bunch of bull-Obama.
The man is pure sleaze. His staff is purse sleaze.
And you, Politico, are pure eaters of sleaze-stuff.
This is somewhat akin to the case of the blind sheikh. When he applied for a US visa in the consulate in Khartoum, his name was entered into the computer misspelled. He was on the terrorist watch list under another spelling of his name. Time to close the borders, brothers.
GOP is out searching for their spine, guts, and gonads 24/7 using both hands and a mirror. So far, NADA!!!
-—um—I can’t even get from Rapid City, SD to Las Vegas ,NV on a plane without my name matching my ID’s—
We have some serious problems that need to be fixed in this country, yet we have an entire Executive Branch that has no desire to fix what is broken, only to demand even more broken legislation to be enacted.
Yeah - HOW DO YOU MISSPELL A PASSPORT NUMBER??????
And we have a so-called opposition party that has no desire to fix anything.
Sure. Like a slight misspelling of a name is any defense.
Tell that to the person who has a name very similar to a wanted criminal, and see how long it takes to get that small error corrected in the records, while the real criminal ranges free for years.
If it ever is corrected.
One suspects that an awful lot of the names the DHS and ICE “just can’t find” are hiding out in practically plain sight, because of failure of diligence in comparing lists.
I don’t believe you goober and I do not believe anything our government says about it.
But, but - The Immigration Reform Bill will fix it!!!! Ya gotta know who is here so the FBI can sift through 14 million names and find out which ones are misspelled and um, um . . well something like that!!!
That brings up an interesting question, will the WON require a passport to travel after he becomes a private citizen?
We don’t know what passport he held..Russian? But he did have a green card with a number on it. Just goes to show us that nothing has changed at the border control since 911. In fact, it has gotten worse, because Islamic country travel and immigration has increased exponentially.
Yeah, wait til they enter your name in obamacare.
Of course, he was only 18 when he arrived at the small liberal arts college nicknamed Oxy. His freshman roommates were Imad Husain, a Pakistani, whos now a Boston banker, and Paul Carpenter, now a Los Angeles lawyer Obama had an international circle of friends _ a real eclectic sort of group, says Vinai Thummalapally, who himself came from Hyderabad, India. As a freshman, he quickly became friends with Mohammed Hasan Chandoo and Wahid Hamid, two wealthy Pakistanis.
In 1981 Obama transferred from Occidental, arriving at Columbia Sept. 1982. In between, he traveled to Pakistan a trip that enhanced his foreign policy qualifications, he maintained in a private speech at a San Francisco fundraiser. Obama spent about three weeks in Pakistan, traveling with Hamid and staying in Karachi with Chandios family, said Bill Burton, Obamas press secretary. He was clearly shocked by the economic disparity he saw in Pakistan. He couldnt get over the sight of rural peasants bowing to the wealthy landowners they worked for as they passed, says Margot Mifflin, who makes a brief appearance in Obamas memoir. When Obama arrived in New York, he already knew Siddiqi a friend of Chandios and Hamids from Karachi who had visited Los Angeles.
Siddiqi offered the most expansive account of Obama as a young man. We were both very lost. We were both alienated, although he might not put it that way. He arrived disheveled and without a place to stay, said Siddiqi, who at the time worked as a waiter and as a salesman at a boutique In about 1982, Siddiqi and Obama got an apartment at a sixth-floor walk-up on East 94th Street. Siddiqi managed to get the apartment thanks to subterfuge. We didnt have a chance in hell of getting this apartment unless we fabricated the lease application, Siddiqi said.
Very interesting read.
Don’t you have to be an American citizen to get a US passport?
Well, I feel better now.
Huh. How on earth would we ever implement that kind of thing? Wait, what...?
The fact is the Russians told our government the guy had terrorist ties. FBI AFAIK interviewed him and let him stay here. So, if you believe Graham, then the fact his name might have been misspelled has absolutely nothing to do with a terrorist being allowed to stay here. They're trying to pull the old bait-and-switch.
Thy Name Is PREDICTABLE!!
I have a problem.
Graham spoke to an assistant director of the FBI?
Graham believed that crap?
He is even more stupid than I gave him credit for.
Or he is a liar-—Take your pick.
How many aliases did the 19 ISLAMIC TERRORISTS have???...some had 4 or 5.
I heard on BBC that the reason he went to Russia for those 6 months was to qualify to renew his passport. I don’t know where they got that info from - I am guessing some of the Russian family members must have told that to a reporter.
How conveeeeeeenient !?
thank you church lady
airlines don’t make the call. So what about his passport and valid visa?? Did he pass through an airport immigration and/or customs agent - officers who are known to be quite thorough (at least used to be)?
Even if it were true, it would only explain the way OUT.
On the way back in, the Homeland “Security” folks at immigration would have had to look at his actual passport. They could have scanned the green card. If there were a red flag on it, shouldn’t they have asked where he’d been? Whatever passport he had, it should have had Russian entry and exit stamps.
Whenever I travel on business to LONDON they scan my passport, look at the stamps and ask me what I was doing there. Is that scanner connected to ANYTHING??
One more point: what was the NAME of the airline employee who didn’t scan his greencard (they scan my passport when I travel) but DECIDED to type it in and then ACCIDENTALLY misspelled the name??
Thats assuming he ever becomes a private citizen again.
This is so much Lyndsay Graham BS. Names are not the only information. Passport numbers are also checked. I assume Tamarlan’s passport was issued by Chechnya or Krysakstan (sp?)
WELLLL....Maybe the Russians misspelled his name, and actually had him confused with somebody else. /s>
“Did he pass through an airport immigration and/or customs agent - officers who are known to be quite thorough (at least used to be)?”
Well, I know of at least one Homeland Security agent who works at Boston International airport that is a member of the same mosque that Tamerlan Tsarnaev attended.
“Back at the new Boston Mosque, I met a man originally from Somalia who was wearing the headdress and robes often associated with negative movie images of Muslims. But he says he s a living example of someone who contravenes easy stereotypes. I work for Homeland security. And because he works for Homeland Security at Boston’s International airport (where the World Trade Center terrorists commandeered the planes that drove into the towers), he preferred that his name not be used.”
I thought passports had numbers on it. no passports scanned into a database? wow what a crapped up system.”
And Graham is touting the new immigration bill because they are going to “fix the system” so they know when someone has overstayed their visa and they can be turned over to the feds. Now that I know that, I’ll be sure to run right out and support it - NOT!
the govenrment is coverign hteir lame butts and lindsay is helpign htem do so- Just turn liberal graham- you’ve doen hte republican party far too much damage as a ‘republican’- at least if you put a D after your name, unsuspecting peopel won’t keep fallign for your BS
I mean, Really? So, now we know how to cover your ties to terrorists’. I think I’ll change mine from “saleman” to “salemen”. Hope this works for the IRS too.
These people really do take us for idiots don’t they?
At least he would have been able to vote, no matter how he name was spelled.
