The screams and cries of bloody marathon bombing victims still haunt the nurses who treated them one week ago. They did their jobs as they were trained to do, putting their own fears in a box during their 12-hour shifts so they could better comfort their patients.
Only now are these nurses beginning to come to grips with what they endured, and are still enduring as they continue to care for survivors. They are angry, sad and tired.

No doubt the emergency providers saw some stuff. BUT, they work in big city hospitals and trauma is everyday. And, they weren’t in a worse situation than a combat hospital near the front lines.
And, conditions were not worse in Boston than the Haiti earthquake.
We need to be careful to think that things today are somehow nastier than they’ve ever been.
If I had been that nurse there would have been one more victim to tend to.
Gut-wrenching article.
My late Mother was an RN for 55yrs (WWII & civilian life) and dealt with this, all the time. My sister is an RN and LPN (34yrs) and deals with it every day. I faint when I see a hypo needle.

Similar stories came from San Diego from the PSA crash but there were lots of bits of lots of people to deal with. The first responders were shaken by that one, there was little hospital staffers could do.
True, but the type of trauma they had to deal with (shredded limbs with nothing but protruding bones remaining, nails embedded in little chilren, etc.) is hardly typical of an average day's work.
The good ones will leave or retire, as my sister’s doing after all the years at kaiser-perm in sf. what’ll be left will be clerks and affirm action hires; you’re 100% right.
Must have been an awful day, expecting to treat dehydration and blisters and instead having to assist while a person’s shredded leg is removed.
West, Texas must not have had any nurses left or I’m sure the media would have that article front page.....
It was noted for a couple days after the blast that the pieces of the device can be reconstructed enough to show what was used. I would think that anything embedded in the victims would want to be retrieved for this purpose and as quickly as possible.
I remember that crash. I think the most intact body was the one that fell through the roof of a car, and they suspect that was from the private plane. The folks on the 727...not much left. Very gruesome. Horrible accident. The cockpit voice recorder contained the last words of one of the pilots: “Mom, I love you!”
The military sends its doctors to train at inner city hospitals, because they are like war zones.
