Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) is suing Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and six other lawmakers, charging that they mishandled the Ethics investigation that led to his public censure in late 2010.
In a complaint filed Monday in federal court in Washington D.C., Rangel claims the Ethics Committee that investigated his alleged wrongdoing are guilty of "numerous flagrant, knowing and intentional violations" of his due process rights.
House members who approved his censure were "knowingly deceived" by the committee leaders including then-Chairman Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) and ranking member Jo Bonner (R-Ala.) into thinking that the probe "had been conducted in accordance with procedural rules and the protection of [Rangel's] constitutional rights," the complaint adds.
The other lawmakers named in the suit are Reps. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), Michael Conaway (R-Texas), Charlie Dent (R-Pa.) and Gregg Harper (R-Mo.). Conaway and Dent were also members of the Ethics Committee behind the investigation.
Rangel was the chairman of the powerful Ways and Means Committee when a series of mounting ethics charges forced him to step down. He was replaced by Rep. Sander Levin (D-Mich.), who remains the top Democrat on the panel.
A House GOP aide was quick to dismiss the suit on Monday.
"The House overwhelmingly voted to censure then-Chairman Rangel by a bipartisan vote of 333-79," the aide said. "Its sad that he has resorted to such tactics in the face of damning evidence."
Rangel's office declined to comment, deflecting questions to the lawyers handling the case.
But he’s BLACK!
The single reason he’s not in prison is...
Likely from a jail cell.
As if that old document mattered.
When Nancy Pelosi was Speaker of the House....
Rangel has jumped the shark.
Boehner will NEVER take that lying down!....oh, wait!
I recall him drinking Mint Juleps on the back of his boat in Bimini, daring them to do anything.
“Retry him and this time expel him.”
Exactly. Charlie is correct. His case was mishandled. The fact he wasn’t expelled by the spineless Republicans was a disgrace.
Maybe, but I’d keep a hand on my wallet when Charlie’s in the room.
If Boehner wasn’t such a wuss, he would call for Tax Cheat Rangel REMOVAL FROM CONGRESS.
Charlie is prime example of the jerks in Congress making life changing decision for this once Great Nation...
TERM LIMIT ARE A MUST...
If the House wasn’t located in Oz along the Yellow Brick Rd, Rangel would be wearing an orange jumpsuit at Club Fed....were he either you or I that’s where he would be.....The whole government is corrupt and the proof is that Rangel is still a member of Congress....
Guys, answer me this; what has being faithful members of the Republican party gotten us? Rush and Mark always remind us that third parties don't work, and are a waste of time. I'm realizing that the only power I have left as a voter, is to change my party affiliation. The only way I can tell the GOPe to go to H*ll is to become an Independent, or simply not vote.
I'm to the point where I think elections really don't matter anymore. I ask again, what has our loyalty to the GOP gotten us? NOTHING!
I'm done with the GOP. Let them go and get the support they crave from the illegals, independents, and moderates.
This is about having a lawsuit...any lawsuit..to form a defense fund for...which he can shake people down for contributions....aka a Charlie Rangel Retirement Slushfund.
You should have Nancy Pelosi stand next to her, too, holding a giant gavel.
But this is about playing the race card not senility.
