Good evening, my...thanks for sharing your history.
Is the old facility still there? Or is everything new?
Norfolk is HUGE.
Yeah!! Been a while since I claimed that!!! Ya have to get up awfully early here to catch the good stuff on FR! Thankee!!!
Thanks, that is a good explanation.
Used to be a great base before all of the cuts.
Oh it’s still there in Old Town.
The original buildings.
It is interesting that there is virtually no record of Navelex having ever been there.
Had it not been for the EPA discovering PCB leaks I think there would have been no record.(we left no foot print LoL) The leaks were found 1 year prior to my enlistment ending.

Naval Station Norfolk is the world's largest naval station, supporting 75 ships and 134 aircraft alongside 14 piers and 11 aircraft hangars, and houses the largest concentration of U.S. Navy forces.
Naval Base San Diego is the largest base of the United States Navy on the west coast of the United States, in San Diego, California.
Looks like Norfolk is THE biggest, but San Diego is the biggest on the WEST coast.
Just got me to thinking.
What is the largest Air Force base and largest Army base in U.S.?
My guess for Army is Fort Benning but I am not sure.
Yup. Long time ago. San Diego was stateside home port for two of my destroyers from 1965 through 1969.
Thanks for the road trip to San Diego, galz! I’ve always wanted to visit there! :)
God bless the troops stationed there and elsewhere!
I bet SD was great back then.
It was pretty conservative and country when I was got there in 1980.
When I left in 92 all the ranches were gone.
Wall to wall condos.

...till they all come home....
Good evening, ML...((HUGS))...Did you and Linda have a good Monday?
We are pushing 50 today, but still freezing at night, and snow/rain maybe.
Gosh, yarddog, I'm a Navy vet--I can talk about naval bases, maybe even some Marine bases, but I couldn't even venture a guess at the Army or Air Force. Interesting question. Probably depends on what you're measuring by-number of troops, aircraft, acres or square miles...
I believe Ft Hood is the largest Army base.
