When a family in Lenoir (Caldwell County) decided to withdraw their son from public school last month in order to teach him at home, an official at the middle school refused to remove him from the public school rolls until the mother first produced a home school license. This meant that the child would be considered truant by the public school while being taught in a homeschool setting.
After the parents contacted Home School Legal Defense Association for assistance, Senior Counsel Dewitt Black wrote the school official and advised her that the family was in full compliance with state law, having filed a notice of intent to operate a homeschool with the North Carolina Division of Non-Public Education. Black also informed the school official that there was no such thing as a home school license and, further, that there was no requirement under state law that parents operating a homeschool provide the school district with any documentation relating to its operation. Finally, Blacks letter stated that since the parents had already made a good faith effort to follow the schools normal withdrawal procedure, they were under no obligation to take any other action in this regard.
This is an example of how threatening legal problems can arise even in a state with a good homeschool law.

That’s the left for you. When the facts don’t support their opinions they just make up new ‘facts’.
In other words, they can never be believed.
Ever.
Why should anyone send his child to school?
“When a family in Lenoir (Caldwell County) decided to withdraw their son from public school last month...”
No parent with HALF A BRAIN would let their kid ever step into today’s public schools. It’s no secret what will happen to these kids.
So, for this guy, he was JUST ASKING FOR IT, but trying to REMOVE his kid - rather than doing what most of us FReepers do and NEVER letting the public school establishment know that our kids exist.
So, for those that have already turned their kids over to “the dark side” but now realize that they want biological grandchildren, my advise is to both move out of town, and withdraw your kids from public school, at the same time...that way, none of the public schools will fell like they have a claim on your kid, and you won’t have to go through this.
so just what is the "good homeschool law" in NC? never mind.. i will look it up myself... i have a feeling it is not so good... but i hope i am wrong...
Went to this doodoo in CA many years ago.
I had to become a fully registered and licensed ‘school’ at the time, and when I did, it drove the libtards nuts; the line from a clerk was: ‘we have laws to protect children from parents like you.’
Was not easy or cheap, but I pulled it off.
Now the publik schools all over are embracing home schooling just to keep their $$ coming in.
Full circle.

So the children belong to the state. Where have I heard that before?
A punative fine for defying the authority of THE STATE. Nothing more.
I wonder how someone like this gets to be a school official and be so ignorant of the law.
I have a mental image of this official sitting behind his/her desk trying to bully the mother. NOT because the official is vitally interested in the child receiving a quality education. Rather because the child represents a specific amount of money to the school, in terms of federal payments for attendance, meals, etc.
To the "official" the kid is just a meal ticket...
So part of it is we have to break through our kind of private idea that kids belong to their parents or kids belong to their families, and recognize that kids belong to whole communities,
“Thats the left for you. When the facts dont support their opinions they just make up new facts.”
Yup!
there is a formula regarding how many students are actually in public schools. Every child that withdraws means less money for public schools and administrators.
If ALL parents, hypothetically, sent their children to private schools or homeschooled, then there would be zero dollars in the formula for the public schools.
The administrator accomplished his task with this slap letter. It was not for these parents it was to send a message that the union will harrass anyone else who tries.
Then, where do all the state collected tax funds for school districts go? To the unions?
I'm beginning more and more to see that vouchers are the ONLY solution.
Some petty martinet gets his much-warranted comeuppance; however, he should have been fired.
That would have left him available for work for which he is vastly better suited - such as flipping burgers or mopping rest rooms.
PA doesn’t have licensing of homeschool, but something just as bad. The school has the final say over whether you may or may not homeschool your child. You’re obliged to submit an affidavit of intent and a list of objectives; keep a log; submit these documents to the school super, for his review and approval; also submit samples of the schoolwork done; teach for the required number of hours; and in some years, have medical exams done and affirmed by the physician.
I think there’s more but mercifully I’m starting to forget.
Point is, in PA you’re not homeschooling legally unless the school super says you are.
I remember now. :) You also need to pay a professional to “evaluate” your homeschooler every year, review the documentation and certify that they’re satisfied.
We've got this crap going on ....
The comment below the article by Lamont Johnston is hilarious when you see his picture along with it :). The nerve of this gal claiming a doctorate!
