RI on way to be 10th state to allow gay marriage

Rhode Island is on a path to becoming the 10th state to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry after a landmark vote in the state's Senate on Wednesday.

The Senate passed gay marriage legislation by a comfortable 26-12 margin, following a House vote of approval in January. The bill must now return to the House for a largely procedural vote, likely next week, but the celebration began Wednesday.

Hundreds of people filled the Statehouse with cheers following the vote.

"I grew up in Rhode Island and I'd like to retire in Rhode Island," said Annie Silvia, 61, who now lives with her partner of 30 years just across the border in North Attleboro, Mass. "No. 10 is a nice round number, but I'd like it to be bigger. Fifty sounds good to me."

Heavily Catholic Rhode Island is the last remaining New England state without gay marriage. Marriage legislation has been introduced in the state for nearly two decades, only to languish on the legislative agenda.

The Roman Catholic Church was the bill's most significant opponent. During the Senate's emotional debate several senators said they struggled mightily, weighing their personal religious beliefs against stories they heard from gay constituents or their families.

Sen. Maryellen Goodwin, D-Providence, said she lost sleep over her vote but decided, despite opposition from the Catholic Church, to vote "on the side of love."

She lost sleep over her vote?

Why is it that, without exception, all who wrestle with this decision, pray, reflect, plumb the depths of their souls and all that, invariably decide that they will support homosexual marriage?

Why is it that nobody ever says they prayed reflected, etc. And decided as a result that we should not allow homosexual marriage?? Why is this process only a one way street????

Fine. Not a fan. But it’s at the state level, where such decisions belong.

A nice round number - well that's all right then!

Dear Annie Silvia: please keep your smug bull dagger self in New England.

And what would a state referendum on this issue have said?

At least it went through the legislature and not the activist courts.

They wouldn't allow one,so they must have feared the voters wouldn't vote the "right" way!

....Just like in Massachusetts!

There are three states that I have not visited. Rhode Island is one of them. I do not think I will ever visit there. Hawaii is another state that i have visited. I may visit before Zero makes his home there, but I will avoid afterwards. The other is Alaska. They are safe so far. I am not sure about the other seven.

I spent considerable time in RI. Rhode Island has voted for real conservatives in the past but the problem is the blue collar NE Democrats and a depressed GOP. I’d like to see Gov Don Carcieri run for Senate in the State. He was elected twice even though he was a social and fiscal conservative. The thing about blue NE states is that to make them competitive statewide you have to give them a reason to look beyond party loyalty which means that you must show competence if you do then you can win as a conservative its just extremely difficult.

Like Lincoln Chafee? The people of Rhode Island are liberals, just like the people of Pa are. I can’t wait to get away from the North East.

“During the Senate’s emotional debate several senators said they struggled mightily, weighing their personal religious beliefs against stories they heard from gay constituents or their families.”

If you voted based on the latter, you just denied God for the desires of others. Sick.

“Sen. Maryellen Goodwin, D-Providence, said she lost sleep over her vote but decided, despite opposition from the Catholic Church, to vote “on the side of love.”

You’re going to Hell, Maryellen. I hope you know that. Christ’s love or feces love. You voted for feces.

Rhode Island’s Catholic leadership need to take the lead of Detroit’s archbishop. DENY THESE POLITICIANS COMMUNION! Exile them from the church. These filthy scumbags are like the money-changers in the temple. Jesus would have thrown them out.

“Gay marriage”? That’s when two “light in the loafers” guys “marry” each other, right? LOL!

That kind of love will send you to Hell, and likely an early grave, as saving faith in love "rejoices not in iniquity." (1Cor. 13:6)

The Pope obviously is privy to info we don't have, because refusing to excommunicate "Catholic" politicians who carry out satans agenda doesn't make any sense at all.

For all I know it's about avoiding another Henry the VIII scenario and keeping the cash rolling in while avoiding giving the heretics another reason to increase their ranks.

The only thing for certain is that Judgement Day is coming.

The Northeast will not be a good place to be when it happens.
