The United States said Thursday for the first time that Syria had likely used chemical weapons against rebel forces, but emphasized spy agencies were still not 100 percent sure of the assessment, AFP reports.
A senior White House official said that "all options are on the table" should use of the chemical weapons be confirmed, but a U.S. defense official stressed that a military intervention was not imminent and signaled spy agencies had differing opinions.
"Our intelligence community does assess with varying degrees of confidence that the Syrian regime has used chemical weapons on a small scale in Syria," U.S. National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said, according to AFP.
The assessment, which she said was based in part on "physiological samples," points to the possible use of sarin, a man-made nerve agent used in two attacks in Japan in the 1990s. It can cause convulsions, respiratory failure and death.

With this administration, doing nothing is the default position.
Kow-towing is position #2.
Except, of course, actually doing anything...
Obama’s official options for emergency Middle East crisis use only! :
A) Throw nearest ally under the bus
B) Bow to Saudi monarch
C) Aid terrorist organization
I could only shake my head in disgust watching McLame nearly burst into tears tonight because Obozo wasn’t helping the Syrians quickly enough.
“Oh, no! This is a tragedy. This nation should be ashamed that we have not put American lives in danger to help a population that hates our guts. We should be sending arms to the SAME PEOPLE who attacked us on 9/11, knowing that they will then use those arms to kill Syrian Christians, conduct ethnic cleansing on their Shiite former masters, and then turn the guns towards Israel. Why, oh, why am I such a pathetic senator who gives no considerations to what the people of my own state might want to do? It’s too much. I’m going to go make out with Lindsey in the bathroom.”
If any commander in the US military receives the order to move into Syria, they should resign in disgust. Obama would be sending them to fight shoulder to shoulder with AL-QAEDA! That said, Obama was a doofus for drawing a ‘red line’ in the first place. Where is the ‘red line’ for the persecution of Coptics in Egypt? Where is the ‘red line’ for government workers running over infants in Chinese parking lots?
The leadership of this country makes me sick. Nobody gives a damn about Assad. He’s a two-bit dictator in a two-bit backwater. He doesn’t have nuclear weapons. He isn’t on a suicide mission to bring about the Mahdi. He’s been rendered pretty much impotent as an Iranian ally because of the instability. The people he’s killing (while the loss of children is tragic) are mostly extremists.
This is NOT your Bosnia, Barack. Stay the F*CK out of Syria.
Thanks.
Isn’t it rich, isn’t it queer
Losing my timing this late in my career
And where are the drones
Quick send in the drones
Don’t bother, they’re here
IOW, we shall be surrendering to Assad any day, now!
“All options are on the table.”
They gonna raise Syrians taxes?
Gee, the Looney Left wants another war in the Middle East over WMDs, but this time the Democrats want us to side with Al Qaeda against Assad.
What could go wrong?!
The red lines are at the grocery store in the snack section.
ESPECIALLY giving the Syrians taxpayeer money by the truckfull.
Obama is for any option that wil further tie down our military and Llow him cover for the next items on his rule-by-fiat agenda.
Ah... damned auto-”correct”. Let’s try that one again:
Obama is for any option that will further tie down our military and allow him cover for the next items on his rule-by-fiat agenda.
Even the option to use a war or military intervention into Syria as a cover up of what happened in Benghazi ?
Nothing will be taken from the table and put into action.
Obama’s Options:
1. Do nothing.
2. Ask the UN to pass a resolution strongly condemning Assad.
3. Create blue ribbon commission to study the issue and submit recommendations.
4. Give BOTH sides food stamps.
5. Give a speech supporting abortion rights at Planned Parenthood.
6. Golf.
7. Take a $4.2 million vacation.
8. Ask Joe Biden to warn Assad not to do anything more or else.
9. Continue with option #1.
