Talks to revive gun control legislation are quietly under way on Capitol Hill as a bipartisan group of senators seeks a way to bridge the differences that led to last weeks collapse of the most serious effort to overhaul the countrys gun laws in 20 years.
Drawing on the lessons from battles in the 1980s and 90s over the Brady Bill, which failed in Congress several times before ultimately passing, gun control supporters believe they can prevail by working on a two-pronged strategy. First, they are identifying senators who might be willing to change their votes and support a background check system with fewer loopholes.
Second, they are looking to build a national campaign that would better harness overwhelming public support for universal background checks which many national polls put at near 90 percent approval to pressure lawmakers.
Senators Joe Manchin III, Democrat of West Virginia, and Patrick J. Toomey, Republican of Pennsylvania, have been talking in recent days about how they could persuade more senators to support their bill to expand background checks for gun buyers, which drew backing from only four Republicans last week.
Were going to work it hard, Mr. Manchin said Thursday, adding that he was looking at tweaking the language of his bill in a way that he believed would satisfy senators who, for example, felt that background checks on person-to-person gun sales would be too onerous for people who live in rural areas far from a sporting goods store.
Those concerns were an issue for Alaskas senators, Lisa Murkowski, a Republican, and Mark Begich, a Democrat.

How would your proposed change in the law prevented what happened in Sandy Hook?
If it wouldn't have prevented it, why are you using that tragedy as a justification for your proposed changes?
How about an open season, where can I get my license??
“which many national polls put at near 90 percent approval”
Yet that is not true, especially among those who read the proposals.
I'm so sick of these paid hacks.
Obama’s ONLY (and I DO mean ONLY) goal here is to get this thing over to the House to die so he can blame that on Republicans and raise money off of it.
Their interest it to eventually have a record of EVERY gun in the land so the communists will confiscate them. It will be the only way our corrupt government can control the masses and enslave us.
I suspect the Senators know that the only thing worse, politically, than supporting the original bill is flipping on it.
I suspect that they do know that and won’t support something that the NRA opposes.
No more gun control.
In fact, start pulling back all the laws out there.
STOP IT NOW.

Oh, it doesn't need to be true, this is the new America where democrats and their pals in the "news" media get to invent the narrative until their agenda is fully implemented.
It is not any “bi-partisan” group of senators. They are all statists. There is no disagreement among them. They all desire total government and no opposition from the subjects. Calling them Republicans and Democrats is like differentiating them by their first names or by whether or not they are bald or left-handed.
Sounds like a great opportunity for a COUNTER-PROTEST.
Of course, in my state of Konnecticut, all of my Federal legislators are Obama-pawns........
If you are doing a background check to determine whether or not I should be able to buy a gun, why do you need to know what type of gun I am buying, let alone the make, model and serial number?
The only thing that matters to this government is advancing its communist agenda.
That’s all, nothing else.
I’ve been promoting the concept of Official Reality, and this fits that rubric well.
These a-holes should be taken to the alley!
WOW, blown away by this comment: “IS THIS THE AMERICA WE WANT?”
This is a 10-strike winning phrase. Please consider using it often.
Didn’t Tumor say right after the vote that he wouldn’t bring anything back up? That didn’t take long.
Keep it up! The American people do not trust you bastards. You will only increase donations to the NRA along with gun and ammo sales.
I have had it with Pat Toomey. Hoped for years for him to finally get elected to the Senate from PA. WHAT a FREAKING DISAPPOINTMENT he has been. He must be primaried OUT! IF only we can find someone who can beat him! I am sure he’s been promised the moon by the dems he’s working with. TRAITOR to the rural Pennsylvanians who elected him!
First, they are identifying senators who might be willing to change their votes and support a background check system with fewer loopholes. .................................................... Wheeeeew, does this stink of dirty $$$$$$$$$$ or what? Gotta be a lot $$$$$ future campaign $$$$ here for those who cooperate?
“overwhelming public support for universal background checks which many national polls put at near 90 percent approval”
Ignorant approval is not impressive. Most probably have no clue what the ramifications of such a system would be to their liberties.
Many people are in favor of background checks, but the devil is in the details.
Most who favor such checks do not realize the language of such bills will give the government the POWER to declare the people to be criminals in their own homes.
But then the pollsters never tell you that when they ask “Do you favor the background check bill before Congress now?”
Louisiana. They have very recently passed a lifetime permit and the resteraunt carry bil (both stories on FR). They are really on a roll getting out in front of the gun grabbers.
The medium is the message.
“look we are working”
It is the issue not the solution.
Don’t use logic to analyze this.
Think propaganda tools.
Obama must really be throwing a hissy fit. I can imagine the threats that he is making against the 4 senators who helped defeat the bill. Harry Reid is probably drinking Mylanta by the gallon.
But at least they have good ol’ dependable John McCain and Lindsey Graham to back them up by added to the pressure.
Important things to consider ahead of time...
The hatred of the Constitution is now a 24/7 job for the left. Which means we need to be on guard 24/7.
“Quietly seeking new path...”
Meaning secretly, behind closed doors, without debate?
How does mccain stand on the lack of debate here?
how about a federal reciprocity law just like DL licenses.
I believe that poll is so discredited only the NYT would push the lie.
L - I - E.
Actually, TWO lies.
There was ONE poll (lie #1) and it never asked that question (lie#2).
It contained a vague question regarding only background checks.
38. Do you support or oppose requiring background checks for all gun buyers?
"Universal background checks" are NOT background checks.
What the neo-communists want with "Universal background checks" is a cross-linked database that includes medical records, prescription drug records, Military service records, credit scores, grade school and college records, school "resource officers" records, civil judgments, employee drug testing, etc, etc.
Essentially, any scrap of data that can be tied to you. At that point the benevolent shepards in our "most transparent" administration will set the sell / no sell bar as they see fit.
That is not the straightforward "do you have a felony conviction" check.
And the 90% figure?
They are referring to the Quinnipiac University poll from Feb, 2013.
It is a twisting of what was actually asked.
Yeah, I know, SHOCKING, right?
February 7, 2013 - Americans Back Women In Combat 3-1, But Less For Draft, Quinnipiac University National Poll Finds; Support For Universal Gun Background Checks Is 92%
What is glaringly obvious by it’s absence is the exact description of what comprises a “universal background check” because it never did ask that question.
It also does not differentiate between a private sale and a FFL sale when referring to “gun buyers.”
Here is the actual question...38. Do you support or oppose requiring background checks for all gun buyers?
So of course the question is vague in that it only says “background checks.”
NOT universal background checks.
But when it comes out of the neo-communists mouth it has transformed into...
SUPPORT FOR UNIVERSAL GUN BACKGROUND CHECKS IS 92%
Umm, no, that is NOT the question that was asked.
Quinnipiac University Polling Institute... Anti-American Citizens rights groups, New York Times, you LIE.
One more thing...
275 Mount Carmel Avenue
Hamden, Connecticut 06518.
I would love it but until there are uniform requirements in all states(training, back ground check procedures etc), it won't happen. Besides CA, IL, NY etc.....would never go for it.
I live in SC where we don't have reciprocity in neighboring Georgia. In order for me to be able to legally carry concealed in Georgia (and other many other states), I have to get my permit in Florida and pay $55. It's a real PITA for those of us who want to travel through these states to get to a destination that SC doesn't have reciprosity with.
Just who keeps electing and reelecting these anti-American, anti-Constitution degenerates (AKA: senators)? At best they should be imprisoned for going against their oaths to defend the Constitution.
I support background checks and drug testing for all immigration candidates and welfare recipients.
If you have a bad record of any kind in your country of origin, or if you turn up as a “person of interest” in an interpol or Mossad inquiry, no immigration visa for you.
If you fail a drug test or have a medically reported drug or alcohol problem, no welfare for you.
If you are not a US citizen, no welfare for you, either.
I can’t say what I’m thinking, but I’m thinking it.
You know, this is kinda funny...Where they are trying to work quietly to move forward with their un-Constitutional agenda...
I believe we can be very public about ours...
I say the more they mess with this issue the more incumbents we throw on the trash heap, show them the street...
Because either way, whatever they decide to do to more forward, their future is dependednt upon them finally getting the idea that they just need to leave this issue alone...Those that just cant leave it alone...Well...Ya know...
BTW, Matt...That collage of pics is truely disturbing...I would kinda have a problem with someone, anyone pointing a rifle at me in that manner, if I was in my home not doing anything illegal...
From where I’m sitting you have a problem. Why are you asking for a license when you know that begging isn’t the solution?
if our side had any brains we’d go on offense big time and roll back what’s out there now.
but our rino leadership doesn’t mind it’s there. if there isn’t huge reward for them they won’t do it.
I work a few blocks from where the jihadi was hiding in a boat. I would point out that the boat was beyond the original police perimeter set up where they were going house to house terrorizing Citizens.
A succinct explanation is to why most science fiction is cautionary. If you don’t read scifi, you are completely unprepared for near-future events.
How about the Fed and judges READING the f*cking 2nd Amendment language.
If need be, bring in a basic English major to show the dip-shits how to diagram a sentence and Webster to help define the words in the phrase ‘shall not be infringed’
Enough w/ the licenses, that’s ALREADY and infringement. Wanna know how? Apply the same to voting (a NON-Right)....and hear the laments of the Left.
Oh come on, really? I heard yesterday—very definitively by the lib broadcaster— that the founders added the second amendment “so that they could chase down slaves who escaped.”
I think the guy in the next car could hear my LOveryL!
which many national polls put at near 90 percent approval to pressure lawmakers.
Still pushing that tired meme.
