Rush is so-o-o wrong on this that I had to come inside and post.

Rush thinks because he was smart enough to forgo an education, today’s graduates are not. The biggest problem that companies have in hiring today is the lack of basic skills, language, grammar, manners, and work ethic.

What kids need are the five year type programs in college, where the students work in their major for a term every year, programs that schools like Drexel University in Philadelphia have been offering forever.

In high school, we need to return to the old tracking system, college prep, business and technology or general, accompanied by a part time job and technical school education. Tech schools should not be a post high school program, like they have turned into. (Our local tech school requires that students pass algebra to take a course to become a cook or a nurses aid, unless you are a member of a protected minority) .

He did not say you don’t need an education and neither am I.
What I am saying and what he is saying is that formal education is often not the answer.

I was bored to death in school just like Rush, until....
Ta da! I was taught application, and encouraged in real world application.

Kids want to feel achievement, real achievement! Not a pat on the head or a gold star for some dumbass project that has no real immediate application in their lives.
Once you have kids confident in themselves and not bored, they will soar toward higher education.

I tell my son that a 2 year degree is in order so that he can earn a living.
He can do anything he wants in the world once he has earning power.

Unlike PHDs with 600K of debt and no experience he is not trapped and pigeon holed.

Rush is not a college grad, but he is highly educated.
He did not get his Class I FCC license without getting the equivalent of an associates in electrical engineering.
I would venture that he did not get his current pilots license without the equivalent of an associate in Aerospace engineering.
He did not become a rich man without the equivalent of a Business degree.

What he is saying is that he did it on his own, on HIS Terms.

I agree, and they should be given the opportunity to make money while they do it. Part time jobs are excellent instruction and introduction to the real world. I see PHD's today that have no idea what it means when the oil light comes on in the car.
