Today, the New York Times ran a front page article that is the best, most in-depth coverage of the Pigford story by the mainstream media to date. Oh, how things have changed.

Just three years ago, in February 2010, the New York Times published an editorial entitled "Pay Up" that towed the pro-Pigford line. The blunt headline summed up the aggressive position that the pro-Pigford advocates were taking.

As the Times said then:

After the settlement, some farmers got their money, but far too many ran into a new buzz saw. They were stalled and rejected through paperwork technicalities, tight deadlines and a lengthy appeals process that officials insisted was necessary.

Yeah, all those “Black Farmers” who “got screwed,” actually were looting the Treasury. Who knew?

If any of those "Black Farmers" were Muslims, they should have been given an additional payout for the mental distress they suffered because of the name "Pigford."

They should have known, if they struck him down he would become more powerful than they could ever imagine.

Only the one’s who had been to jail, because that’s where they are “converted” to Islam. You know, “join up” or we will have BIg John pay you a visit in your cell.

I am a white Southern small farmer-rancher. I built this farm myself and paid for it all by selling 40 years of my labor. A black friend from the Caribbean got about $20,000 of his work and supplies done by contractors hired and paid for by gov’t agencies (underprivileged farmer act?) and it cost him $300. His ancestors were not slaves here but mine were poor farmers near Augusta when Sherman’s thugs totally ripped apart their house and barn and stole every scrap of food; my grandmother’s grandfather starved to death as a result. We have been enduring Reconstruction 2 since 1965; many friends refuse to vote Republican period.

One of my leftie friends (I know, I know, but we've been friends since the 60's) posted about this article on FB:

"The Agriculture Department's fraud-plagued, metastasizing program of giving 50k to parties who could, maybe, perhaps have asked for loans and been discriminated against on the basis of race or gender is exactly what the far right has predicted. I predict that this will be a huge political issue."

I wonder whether this will lead him, and his fellow travelers at the Times, to start taking what we on the "far right" have been saying a little more seriously?

Probably right after I see a unicorn grazing on my front lawn.
