California Proposes Soda Tax to Defray Costs of Obesity and Dental Disease

California Sen. Bill Monning, D-Carmel, proposes a penny-per-ounce tax on sugary drinks. KGO-TVreports that his controversial bill is currently on its way to the senate's Health Committee for discussion.

How much more expensive would a can of soda be if the tax goes into effect?

The price of each can of sweetened soda would increase by 12 cents.

Which types of beverages will this law affect?

As noted in SB-622, this tax affects all "bottled sweetened beverages" as well as concentrates if they contain more than 25 calories for every 12 ounces of content. Fruit and vegetable juices may also be affected when their natural fruit or vegetable content falls below 50 percent. Furthermore, this tax affects sports drinks, energy drinks and sweetened iced teas.

Which beverages are exempted?

Among the exemptions are concentrates of milk products and those containing "more than 50 percent natural fruit juice" or natural vegetables juice. A provision to exempt plant protein sources as a concentrate was taken out by lawmakers.

What happens to the money the state collects because of the California soda tax?

Monning proposes the creation of a "Children's Health Promotion Fund." The money may be spent on activities that prevent childhood obesity statewide. Examples include educational materials, policy making and public health campaigns. Some of the money would also benefit school nutrition programs, hiring of and training for physical education teachers and the construction of school facilities for recreational activities.

Anyone remember the Robin Williams movie POPEYE?

Nope. But you did remind me that a new Popeye's Chicken has opened in my town and I am hungry.

Why don’t they have a condom tax to defray the cost of California idiots?

Grape and carrot juice have more sugar and calories than soda. Grapes the size and sugar content of malt balls are not natural.

“Why don’t they have a condom tax to defray the cost of California idiots?”

‘Cause they’re too stupid to use condoms.

Dental disease?? Dental should not be covered for the poor. It is nearly impossible for middle class to afford dentistry. The poor should not get it for free.

The next California/Maryland state tax will be a special tax on people who have cancer. Because cancer costs so much to treat. Yes, I do believe California/Maryland and Obama and his Democrats would do something like that.

I have an idea, let them use the money they’re currently using to subsidize high fructose corn syrup.

Oh my gosh! I love it!!

California is so far gone that the next congress will need to dust off the post-Civil War Reconstruction Act and appoint a military governor to take down the democrat commies and fascists and lock them up.

That’s the strategy that Rats in the Massachusetts legislature and State House use.You can bet your bottom dollar that in California, like Massachusetts, this tax money will be used to fund EBT cards,”undocumented workers” and juicier salaries and pensions for those “working” in the “public sector”.

We always knew that controlling health care was the opening the nanny staters needed to controlling how people eat and behave. Now they can use the excuse "We don't want to pay for...", so whatever people do the majority either doesn't like or doesn't care about will be in the crosshairs, just like cigarettes, motrocycle helmets, seat belts, big gulps, all are.

Once you have established precedent for regulating anything a willing adult knowingly puts in their body, you have established precedent for regulating everything a willing adult knowingly puts in their body.

The precedent is long established. Now people will get to see just how far that power can reach in the 'wrong' hands.

Tax condoms and they'll just use it as an excuse to breed more. (Reality, not just some Fluke)

While you are there at Popeye’s, would you mind picking me up some of those new cajun chicken strips and some cole slaw?

I can do without the sugary soda.

Thanks!
