Mother 'traumatized' after fatally stabbing daughter's boyfriend reportedly hiding in closet

A 35-year-old single mother came home from her evening criminal justice classes Wednesday about 7:15 p.m. and was startled to see a stranger wearing a hoodie inside her walk-in closet, according to statements she later told police and her family members. Panicked, the woman reportedly grabbed a knife from under her pillow, and stabbed the man several times.

The man died within the hour at a local hospital. The Orleans Parish coroner's office on Thursday identified him as Tyrone Scott, 17.

The family believes Scott hid in the closet at the house in the 3900 block of Gibson Street in Gentilly because he was secretly seeing the woman's underage daughter, who is 15, according to a family member.

The relative requested anonymity out of fear of retaliation; aside from the girl, none of the family members knew Scott, he said. The girl has been too distraught to give much information, he said.

"As far as we know, he was an extremely good kid," the relative said, "and it was just an unfortunate accident. We are hurting for their loss. Everybody's suffering."

The mother was taken to NOPD headquarters for questioning and was released. Homicide detectives are investigating the case to determine whether it will be deemed justifiable, NOPD spokesman Frank Robertson III said.

"It was a terrible incident and we regret that it happened," said George Blair, an attorney for the woman.

The woman's relative said she was hysterically crying Wednesday night and Thursday. "She is traumatized. She will never recover from this," he said. "We weren't raised to take people's lives. It was not intentional. She felt she had to defend herself and she did."

Efforts to reach Scott's family were not immediately successful. The woman's family said they would like to talk to Scott's family. "Our hearts really

Justice served. And likely a whole lot of taxpayer money saved.

If my daughter had a 17-year-old boyfriend whom I didn’t know, and I found him - that is, an unidentified adult male - hiding in my closet at night, I don’t think I would feel too badly about stabbing what I legitimately believed was a dangerous intruder.

I’d be sad that he died, I guess, although that depends on what else I learned about him.

She keeps a knife under her pillow? Hmmm.

At 17, you’d think Tyrone could have beat feet out of there before momma had a chance to stab him.

He chose to be at the wrong place/her house and then his guilt forced him into the closet to hide.

Either beat feet or dived out a window.

So this lady killed a suspicious looking seventeen year old black male who was wearing a hoodie and she’s not being charged? Where’s A and Jesse? Where’s the media outrage? Afterall, she would have to be racist to assume a seventeen year old black male in a hoodie was up to no good, right? Oh, wait, the lady is likely black so there’s no evil white racist angle to run with? Alright, forget about it then.

I can understand thinking he was a criminal and defending yourself. Of all the places to hide, Tyrone did not pick a wise one. I guess this could be chalked up as a Darwin Award winner. My question was more towards the phrasing of the other posters “oh well” attitude towards killing your daughters boyfriend.

A boyfriend of mine had a close call along these lines.

He was something of a pest, and decided all on his own that it would be cool to come and tap on my bedroom window late one night.

What he did NOT know was that, about 5 years previously, a peeping tom/rapist/whatever had tried to break in my bedroom window, and Dad shot him.

Dad was about to have a return engagement, but being a sensible fellow he identified his target first(and said target peed his pants).

He was shortly thereafter an ex-boyfriend, by mutual consent. He decided my family was too dangerous, and I decided he was too dumb.

I can't speak for Yaelle, but I was commenting based on the details of this particular situation.

In real life, if my 15-year-old daughter had a 17-year-old boyfriend - not totally impossible, because she knows some nice boys that age at church and in science competition - they would be chaperoned on all occasions. An advantage of an intact family (and a really large family) is that there are eyes on everyone, all the time. Of course, that can be a disadvantage, too ...

“But the schmuck who should be with another adult? He’s old enough to be fully responsible.”

He was 17, probably still in high school, for pete’s sake. Most states have laws that make a 17 year old dating a 15 year old perfectly legal.

I guess the holier than thou crowd around here never heard of a sophomore dating a senior before, but it happens all the time in the real world.

If she had a backhoe, she wouldn't have had to report it at all, and Tyrone would just be gone.

Until my daughters were grown and gone, I had a backhoe around, and explained its purpose to young men.
