Why is Texas Governor Rick Perry in Illinois? (Another "I'm coming for your jobs" tour)
TIME ^ | 04/28/2013 | By Josh Sanburn

Like an aging rocker, Texas Governor Rick Perry is currently on the 2013 I’m Coming For Your Jobs tour across America. His first stop: California a couple months ago. This week he’s in Illinois, where he got a nasty reception from public officials. The trips are part of an effort to get businesses from highly taxed and heavily regulated states to relocate down South — but his efforts may fall flat, if recent history is any indication.

Texas has arguably become one of the few true economic success stories since the recession. The state has an unemployment rate of around 6% and a $9 billion budget surplus, even as many states struggle with 8% and 9% unemployment and severe budget deficits.

The state is run by pro-business Republicans in the state legislature, along with Gov. Perry, who supports low regulation and low taxes. Texas doesn’t have an individual income tax, either. Its minimum wage is lower than other left-leaning states, which keeps labor costs down. Prices for land and housing are low. And the oil and natural gas boom in recent years has kept jobs from leaving the state. The tradeoff for all this, of course: Texas’s relatively flimsy social safety net.

But Perry still isn’t satisfied with business in Texas. The governor sees even more potential if he can just lure corporations away from states that aren’t as friendly to business. The two states he’s visited so far, California and Illinois, rank 50th and 48th, respectively, in a survey of best states for business, according to a recent poll in the Wall Street Journal.

He doesn’t have to get every business, just enough of them. The more business relocate to Texas, the more likely other business on their own will also relocate to Texas.

The governors of Illinois and California must really hate this guy.

I wonder what state is next on his tour route...

“Like an aging rocker”

How is this relevant to what Perry is doing? I can hardly think of a stupider or less relevant comparison.

I’d say that it’s reporters like this jerk who resemble aging rockers.

The image building and public relations value to Texas, the positive publicity generated, has enduring value to Texas.

The left hates these trips and attacks them because it also points out the failures of liberalism.

The media should not have any emotional investment in these trips, but their articles always reveal that it bugs them terribly.

>> He doesn’t have to get every business, just enough of them.

As far as I’m concerned he doesn’t have to get *any* of them!

Just watching him piss off liberal media and socialist state governments is entertainment, and worth every dollar I help to pay him.

In fact, if they’re going to come to Texas and demand reinforcement of what Time calls our “flimsy social safety net”, I’d just as soon they stay in IL or CA or NY.

Careful Governor, ...

Some of those businesses are run by
liberal Pukes that helped get their state in such trouble.

Be sure to check out every business that says they might move to Texas before welcoming them with open arms.

He’s not a reporter. He’s a propagandist.

Wouldn’t it be more accurate to write that, like a touring rock star the Texas Governor.....

How does “aging rock star” make sense.

Heh, it is a matter of economics don’t ya think? If he can get folks to move to Texas, more power to him.

Although he seems to be complimenting with faint damning.

Liberals: please keep trashing your cities and states.. we’re happy to suction off the cream of your societies.

Damn it! I’m sorry—old governor Pointy Boots is filling this state with people who are probably wild eyed liberals.

We have enough liberals here as it is. If he wants to go to some conservative states and bring in some good conservative, hard working people, that’s fine.

Of course, we don’t need any new citizens in the Hill Country and other drought ridden areas of Texas. We have no water!

Heh, actually, most factories and folks that would move to Texas would not fall into your “liberal” category. Yes, no more liberals but yes to those that want to make money - ie. capitalists.

Nice thought about the water though - that ought to keep them away..heh.

It doesn't even matter if he takes away a business. He get free publicity talking up his state, and even businesses already in Texas feel from this is will fight for them and not be a hindrance. This is the kind of attitude governors should have, but many like in Illinois and California, feel businesses are there to provide their cut to the government.

I’m sure the author didn’t think of this when he wrote it but the comparison is apt. Let’s take the Rolling Stones as an example.

1. Everywhere they go, people flock to see them.
2. When they perform, enormous sums of money are given to their cause.
3. People listen to what they say.
4. Critics (usually hipster types) complain that they’re crap and they don’t understand what people see in them.
5. They have fun.

I’d say it’s an accurate analogy. Just not in the way the writer thinks.
