Why is Texas Governor Rick Perry in Illinois? (Another "I'm coming for your jobs" tour)
TIME ^ | 04/28/2013 | By Josh Sanburn

Like an aging rocker, Texas Governor Rick Perry is currently on the 2013 I’m Coming For Your Jobs tour across America. His first stop: California a couple months ago. This week he’s in Illinois, where he got a nasty reception from public officials. The trips are part of an effort to get businesses from highly taxed and heavily regulated states to relocate down South — but his efforts may fall flat, if recent history is any indication.

Texas has arguably become one of the few true economic success stories since the recession. The state has an unemployment rate of around 6% and a $9 billion budget surplus, even as many states struggle with 8% and 9% unemployment and severe budget deficits.

The state is run by pro-business Republicans in the state legislature, along with Gov. Perry, who supports low regulation and low taxes. Texas doesn’t have an individual income tax, either. Its minimum wage is lower than other left-leaning states, which keeps labor costs down. Prices for land and housing are low. And the oil and natural gas boom in recent years has kept jobs from leaving the state. The tradeoff for all this, of course: Texas’s relatively flimsy social safety net.

But Perry still isn’t satisfied with business in Texas. The governor sees even more potential if he can just lure corporations away from states that aren’t as friendly to business. The two states he’s visited so far, California and Illinois, rank 50th and 48th, respectively, in a survey of best states for business, according to a recent poll in the Wall Street Journal.

There’s only one natural lake in Texas, which is Caddo Lake in SE Texas.

Not to nitpick, but Caddo Lake is in NE Texas.

I don’t recall California ever being conservative like Texas, in fact, almost a half century ago Californians considered Austin the only oasis of sanity within Texas.

California has been republican, but it was always a loosey/goosey, rino, social liberal republicanism.

You are a perfect example of the attitude of many Californians towards Texas conservatism, they despised and mocked Texas, even in the 1960s.

Look, you believe what ya want.

If ya think bringing in say 5 million more low wage jobs, many of will be taken by illegal aliens and the non-skilled, and this will somehow magically make TX more conservative...Well what can I say?

Take care and good luck!

Yep, CA was a bastion of conservatism in the 60’s...Berkeley, LA, San Fran and all that.

I don’t think Reagan could have won Gov without the Hollywood connection. It was not his conservatism, it was his star power. Another words, it was the cult of personality back then. It just happened to play in our favor that time.

Again, Why is Texas (the whole state) second in population but no where near second in liberalism? And if its all about population, why is Collin county, one of the most populated counties (had multiple cities top the fastest growing list for US several years in a row) rated the most conservative voting county in the entire state?

Word twisting. I never claimed it would make Texas more conservative. I simply claimed that it is not all about populations and low wage earners.

And some of the businesses moving to Texas are bringing skilled high wage earner jobs. And lastly, since when is CA home to only low wage earner jobs? Doesn’t it have the most millionaires (for now at least)?

No, Reagan was not elected on star power..That's BS.

By the time he ran for president, he had been long gone from the star/hollywood scene. He got elected because he was a natural, a great speaker, a conservative, and was a really a genuine American and passionate person who didn't come from extreme wealth, like some others who came to power.

Once again, if ya think 5 or 10 or 20 million more people will somehow make Texas more conservative and not less, and not cause government to grow, creating more taxes, regulation etc etc.....What can I say?

Sure in hell didn't work in CA...The higher the population became, the more it became leftist with incrementally more and bigger state government, more taxes etc, etc etc...

Good luck...

While exposure to conservatives and conservatism in normal life and at the workplace helps change people, most Californians fleeing to Texas don’t need a lot of changing.

“”While it’s tempting to assume that Californians relocating to Texas are moving to the state’s big metropolises and bringing their liberal, “California” attitudes (I’m sure many of you think that I’m being redundant), data collected in the University of Texas/Texas Tribune polls tell a different story.

With its economic troubles, California has been losing people in droves. The plurality of those migrants have moved to Texas, as many as 70,000 in 2011 and 60,000 in 2012. Given this influx of new residents, we are fortunate to have at times asked our respondents whether they have moved to Texas from California, and though the actual number of these people is but a small subsample of our surveys, we have enough respondents to make two broad conclusions. First, these newcomers, on average, tend to be conservative. Pooling data from the May 2012 and February 2013 UT/Tribune surveys, we found that 57 percent of these California transplants consider themselves to be conservative, while only 27 percent consider themselves to be liberal (a fair guess as to the margin of error is somewhere around +/- 7 percentage points). Second, these new Texans aren’t rushing to find homes in the state’s urban centers: 55 percent are heading to the suburbs, the rest evenly dividing themselves between rural and urban locations.

So while some may want to perceive the wave of Californians coming to Texas as part of the broader demographic trends that might eventually turn Texas purple, and then blue, the data collected to date suggest that Perry’s pitch appears to be hitting a chord with Californians who wear cowboy boots instead of Birkenstocks.””

And lastly, since when is CA home to only low wage earner jobs?

Ya think the millions of illegal here all work in Silicon Valley? They work in sweat shops, manufacturing, factories...Hired by the corrupt and greedy just like ya got in Texas.

These are the same companies Perry is begging to come to Texas...He came to CA begging about a year ago and went straight to the companies who hire nothing but illegals in **Vernon** for instance...It's a town in the shadows of LA high rises, where thousands of illegals make 1980s wages.

This is what is coming your way tex....

The number of illegal immigrants living in the United States was virtually unchanged in 2010 from a year earlier, but statistics suggest their population in Texas continued to grow, according to new estimates from the Pew Hispanic Center.

Whoops....

Whoops what? California and Texas have the exact same percentage of Hispanics, exactly the same.

Yet one is what you pretend to like, conservative, and the other is what you really like, liberal.

Texas Dems pin their hopes on growing Hispanic population

It should be quite entertaining watching you and perry pander and offer prizes and freebies for GOP votes in the future...

Yeah, you are a DU guy alright.

Of course the left wants Texas, look at your posts on this thread, it is a white hot hatred for the bastion of conservatism, it is like your great white whale that you can’t stop whining about.

Wishing and getting are two different things though.

Everything you’ve stated I can attest to from firsthand experience. Texas is not a good place for professionals.

It should be really fun watching you and the GOP down there try to buy votes and make promises for votes... Of course the tax payers will be paying for all the prizes and vote bribes...

All the politicians will be rushing to make appearances and promises....Like this guy did...

No, all you have posted is your anger and hopes, to you an article about the left naturally targeting the conservative bastion, is more than just a routine article of normal politics, you post it like a DUer, as though you cling to it for hope.

Every one of your many, many, many posts on this thread are a primal scream of hatred for the conservative state, the one that we conservatives depend on to help us attain our goals, the one that holds out hope, and serves as a conservative example.

Texas disturbs you terribly, and California suits you perfectly, you are a common type for California republicans.

Since begging for welfare for Texas last week, Perry went to Illinois and California to see how much more freebie money he can get for Texas since Illinois and California receive so much more and wants to learn their tactics.
