The source is claiming that Tamerlan was there (2012) to join the jihad, and got out fast when his two key contacts were killed by Russian counter-terrorism forces!

Why do wannabe American terrorists have to fly all the way to Dagestan/Yemen/Afghanistan for training when it is so much cheaper for them to go to terrorist camps right here in the US?
