What a criminal can assault a law-abiding citizen with, a law-abiding citizen can just as easily deter and defend against criminals.

Trust me? What the hell does he know? A real assault weapon, as defined by our military is a select fire firearm. That is, it is either a fully automatic machine gun, or can be selected to fire in single rounds (or 3 groups).
So, NO a shotgun is not better than a full auto machine gun, shot from a distance the shotgun cannot reach. Close in, maybe but only with surprise. A Thompson beats a trench broom anyday— cut somebody in half with it.
