Three suspects charged with helping marathon bomber hide tracks
Fox News ^ | May 1, 2013 | Pamela Browne

Three new suspects have been charged in connection with the Boston Marathon bombing, two for conspiring to get rid of their friend's incriminating backpack filled with gutted fireworks after learning he was a suspect in the April 15 terror attack, and another for lying to investigators, according to an FBI affidavit released Wednesday.

Dias Kadyrbayev and Azamat Tazhayakova both 19-year-old natives of Kazakhstan and friends of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev at UMass-Dartmouth, allegedly went to Tsarnaev's dorm and took a laptop, the backpack and some Vaseline that may have been used in making the deadly pressure cooker bombs that killed three and injured more than 200 at the race. Police believe the bombs were packed with shrapnel and gunpowder removed from fireworks.

Robel Phillipos, of Cambridge, Mass., also 19, was charged with willfully making materially false statements to federal law enforcement officials during a terrorism investigation.

The affidavit filed in support of a complaint said Kadyrbayev was the one who carried out the disposal of the backpack after the three saw the fireworks that had been hollowed out and emptied of gunpowder.....

Another option for these kids might have been to NOT go bombing the United States. Their lives would be much more peaceful now if they had chosen that path.

Why shouldn’t they get read their Miranda rights? They are now defendants in a criminal case. Reading the complaint, there is no indication that they knew of the bombing in advance (and, in fact, the complaint suggests they did not).

Friends of bomber Dzokhar Tsarbaev---- Dias Kadyrbayev and Azamat Tazhayakova both 19-year-old natives of Kazakhstan--- and Robel Phillipos, of Cambridge, Mass, a US citizen, also 19, were all charged in connection with the Boston Marathon bombing.

How much were the dirty trio collecting in welfre benefits?

2 of the 3 aren’t citizens...I’m not sure about the third...They can be questioned and there should be a preliminary investigation into the extent of their participation in an act of terror.

We’re told the Vaseline had a very functional propose in bombing making. I’m not buying they didn’t know something was coming, no way.

The brothers still had bombs, killed one officer and severely wounded another one. These three were aiding and abetting. If it weren’t for them the MIT officer would probably still be alive. It was more than a coincidence that they knew exactly what to dispose of.

Here’s a good take on the three’s actions when they recognized Bomber #2.....

The Story:

...Dias Kadyrbayev was driving back to his apartment when he got a call from a college buddy. A clearly anxious Robel Phillipos told him authorities had released photos of the alleged Boston Marathon bombers and one of them looked very familiar.

When he got home, Kadrybayev turned on the television to see Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, his friend, classmate and, by then, one of the most wanted men in the world...That call set in motion a series of events...

According to an FBI affidavit based on interviews with all three men,

... this is how it played out.

....Kadyrbayev first met Tsarnaev in 2011, when they both started at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, south of Boston, near the base of Cape Cod. He told authorities he became “better friends” with the ethnic Chechen in spring 2012, and that he was a frequent visitor to the rundown Tsarnaev home in Cambridge.

Kadyrbayev and fellow Kazakh, Azamat Tazhayakov, hung out together on and off campus with Tsarnaev. The three 19-year-olds often spoke Russian among themselves.

Kadyrbayev, an engineering major, was headed back to the New Bedford apartment that he and Tazhayakov shared when Phillipos called. It was April 18, three days since the twin bombings that killed three and wounded more than 260.

When he saw the images of Tsarnaev and his older brother, Tamerlan, Kadyrbayev texted his friend and told him that he looked a lot like the guy on the television.

“lol” Dzhokhar replied, according to the FBI affidavit. Then Tsarnaev’s messages took on a more ominous tone.

“you better not text me,” read one.

“come to my room and take whatever you want,” read another.

A month earlier, during a meal, Dzhokhar had apparently felt the need to tell his Russian-speaking chums that he’d learned how to make a bomb. Even so, Kadyrbayev told authorities he thought his friend’s texts were a joke.

The Kazhaks and Phillipos, who’d attended the prestigious Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School with “Jahar,” as Dzhokhar was known, agreed to meet at Pine Dale Hall, their friend’s dorm. Phillipos, the 19-year-old son of a single mother, said he wanted to see for himself whether the TV reports were true.

Tsarnaev’s roommate let them in, saying they’d missed him by a couple of hours.

According to Kadyrbayev, the trio decided to watch a movie (he didn’t specify which one). At some point, they noticed a backpack.

Inside, they discovered more than a half-dozen fireworks, each about 8 inches long, according to the affidavit. The black powder had been scooped out.

Kadyrbayev said he knew instantly that his friend was indeed involved in the bombings. But instead of calling authorities, he told investigators he began thinking of ways to get rid of the evidence.

Just in case the roommate thought he was “stealing or behaving suspiciously” by grabbing the backpack alone, Kadyrbayev decided to take Tsarnaev’s laptop as well.

The three returned to the Kazhaks’ apartment and watched news reports of the intensifying manhunt. They discussed what to do with Tsarnaev’s things.

As the situation’s gravity began to sink in, Phillipos _ whose own text to Tsarnaev went unanswered _ said everyone “started to freak out,” according to authorities. The other two men began speaking to each other in Russian.

Around 11 p.m., according to Phillipos, Kadrybayev broached the topic of ditching the stuff. Phillipos says he replied, “Do what you have to do,” then managed to drift off to sleep.

When he awoke from his two-hour nap, the backpack and computer were gone.

By then, 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev was dead, cut down in a hail of police gunfire, then run over by his fleeing brother. Later that night, the three friends’ college buddy, bleeding from several gunshot wounds, surrendered from his hiding place under a tarp covering a boat in the backyard of a home in Watertown.

On April 26, authorities found the backpack in a New Bedford landfill. According to the affidavit, it contained the emptied fireworks, a jar of Vaseline and a UMass-Dartmouth homework assignment sheet from a class in which Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is currently enrolled.

Presumably the nails and ball bearings had to be placed in position and not rattle around as the bomb is being carried. There are probably other possible uses but I’m not into googling for stuff like that.

I suspect the backpack was dumped way before the timeframe they are admitting to.

Irrespective of the vaselines use....why/how would the friends know to scoop up and dispose of the Vaseline as something that would be incriminating?

Unravelled fireworks, sure, that looks suspicious. But, if the three friends had no involvement or prior knowledge, why dispose of a jar of Vaseline? I imagine they didn’t throw dispose of a host of other items, toothpaste, shampoo, hair gel, wart ointment, etc. ...but they knew to dispose of the Vaseline, which is indeed incriminating?

It doesn’t suggest the three friends had no prior knowledge.

Quote: “Kadyrbayev, an engineering major...”

A sophomore in any engineering program has had or is taking a course in electric circuits; has access to and instruction in using a multimeter and other equipment to build/diagnose circuitry; and, also has two-three course in physics. Enough to develop/test a remote trigger/detonator, certainly much more than your average IED builder in Afghanistan.

USA Today, excerpt:

“A Google Translate interpretation of Kadyrbayev’s boarding school information includes physics and mathematics as specialties and indicates he graduated with the class of 2011. Google also deciphers the word Zhautykov, and web searches indicate there is a Zhautykov Republican Specialized Physics-Mathematics boarding school for gifted students in Kazakhstan.”

Add to that engineering course at UMass Darmouth. And does it sound like someone who may have the technical ability to develop/test a remote detonator?

Just saying.

It appears both from Kasakhstan come from wealth...

.... that might also play into why they could afford $900. sneakers which Bomber #2 was bragging about. The BMW was one of theirs, as the father stated earlier.

It looks to me so far like The Bombers sset the bombs...though yes Kadyrbaye may very well have “recognized” items laying around.

Well, that does remain to be seen...am thinking those investigating may be onto this possibility.

Interesting was listening to one of the Dr.s speak who heard the Bombs go off....he had served in Iraq and knew the sound of an IED.....when the first one went off he immediately said that it was an IED...outloud, though not speaking to any one directly...and listened for the second one he knew would follow, as was done in Iraq.

This link gives one great pause as those Dr.s etc. in the Tent areas explain happenings that followed the bombing....It’s quite the eye opener.....

Interesting take.... These suspects will provide potential trial testimony about Tsarnaev’s admissions to them about the crimes he committed.

‘Aiding and abetting’ by harboring a fugitive terrorist carries a US Sentencing Guidelines Base Offense Level of 30, which translates to 97-121 months if a defendant has no criminal record, 70-87 months on a guilty plea. That range could go up or down depending on other aggravating or mitigating factors, ....

....but the potential ten-year sentence (served in a US prison) gives us an idea of the level of pressure on these new suspects to give evidence against the younger terrorist.

Every additional piece of evidence against him will make it harder for Tsarnaev to escape the death penalty.

Furthermore, the broader and deeper the investigation unfolds against the pre-bombing support network, the less information Tasarnaev has to bargain for his life. He's not getting any breaks in the federal court. Safe bet is, he'll get injected in a US Prison like Terra Haute about five or six years from now.

Further...I suspect possible this will become a nation to nation issue because as John Bolton said tonight. Kaystan. has been working well with us...and those two come from wealthy families....might see some Saudi style dealings along the way.... so don’t be surprised.

This is also to be considered...

the two from Kazachastan...mega bucks!

The reason to dispose of the jar of vaseline is because the vaseline was a component in the making of the bombs.

Vaseline is flammable and nicely non-liquid, ie, you could put it into a container that has some small holes in it and it won’t all run out like a liquid would. All you need to do is mix in enough oxidizer, get an initiator into contact with the mixture and you’re good to go.

Some heavy-duty oxidizer like potassium perchlorate would probably make a reasonable low-yield explosive like what we saw in the films out of Boston.

Where do you find potassium perchlorate?

Some types of colored fireworks, that’s where. Jeez, doesn’t anyone here study science any more? This is high-school level chemistry, folks.

The fact that the friends scooped up the computer, the vaseline and the empty fireworks containers means that the friends had prior knowledge. I’ll wager that the DA will be charging at least one of the three stooges with conspiracy.
