When Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird announced Canada would not be spending time and money pandering to despotic regimes in order to re-win a seat on the UNs Security Council, the NDP once again displayed its abject ignorance of international reality.
Canadas next move should be to get out of this expensive and despicable club of dictators and fools altogether, and let the veto powers of Russia, China and the United States continue to do as they want.
Canadas principled voice only brings us grief.
Because of Canadas staunch support of Israel, for example, a pack of disgruntled Arab states is right now setting about to punish Canada by stripping it of a UN agency that has been headquartered in Montreal since 1947, and sets international rules for air transportation.
This action was triggered by Bairds audacity in April to meet an Israeli minister in East Jerusalem, a controversial patch of occupied land that many Arab countries view as the must-be capital of any future Palestinian state.
According to diplomacy experts, having the International Civil Aviation Organization yanked out of Montreal and moved to Qatar would be more embarrassing to the Harper government than losing to Portugal, no less its 2010 bid for a seat on the UN Security Council.
So why be in this club at all?
Its not like leaving the UN would isolate Canada from the rest of the world, since it still has vital roles in NATO, the Commonwealth, the Francophonie, the Organization of American States, the G-8, the G-20 and the International Monetary Fund.
It would be nothing more than dropping a useless charge card with a preposterous annual fee taking up space in Canadas wallet.
It would be better, therefore, to simply get out and take strong positions in organizations where there is true influence.
Like in the Commonwealth, for example.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper, in fact, had already stated he will be a no-show at the Commonwealth summit in Sri Lanka this fall unless that country quickly makes moves towards major democratic reforms to correct its human rights record.
This is Canada standing tall.
In the UN, however, principles dont matter.
Instead, its rife with the unprincipled.
I cannot speak for Canada, but the United States should get out of the UN also.
We should get out of the UN also and give them 12 months to get out of NYC and move somewhere else.
To all- please ping me to Canadian topics.
